While we reported the record numbers of 6.7 million total units sold, 2.7 million of which coming in the Blu-ray format, the numbers against competition are even more telling. The "closest" competitor to Avatar was fellow Fox new release Crazy Heart, a film in which features Jeff Bridges's Oscar winning performance. Crazy Heart took second place on the DVD sales charts, but sold just 5% as many copies as Avatar sold and the third place finisher, The Lovely Bones, another new release, sold just 2.9% of what Avatar sold.
Avatar and Crazy Heart finished 1-2 in DVD rentals as well, with Lovely Bones in fourth place behind the rental winner for the last three weeks, Sherlock Holmes, which slipped to third place.
On the Blu-ray sales charts, it was Avatar and Crazy Heart finishing in first and second place, but the numbers, again, were incredibly stacked in Avatar's favor. It was said that an enormous 49% of Avatar's total sales came in the Blu-ray format, but the studio put the estimate at 40%, since the charts don't include DVD or BD sales from Wal-Mart and Sam's Club. By comparison, Crazy Heart sold just 1.7% as many BD discs as Avatar did.
Avatar was released December 18th, 2009 and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel Moore, Giovanni Ribisi, Michelle Rodriguez, Laz Alonso. The film is directed by James Cameron.
