Avatar Earns $27 Million on Opening Day

According to ERC Box Office, Avatar has earned an estimated $27 million on its opening day in various formats including 3D IMAX. At this rate, the film is poised to become the third highest grossing film in history for the month of December.

Avatar is estimated to take in $74 million over the course of its first three days in release. That wouldn't quite have it breaking the best December opening weekend, which is currently held by I Am Legend. Will Smith's film debuted with $77 million on its opening weekend this same time two years ago.

Analysts are blaming snow on the East Coast for such low numbers. While others believe that it is a word of mouth movie that will grow with each coming day. Avatar is directed by James Cameron and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Peter Mensah, Laz Alonso, Wes Studi, Stephen Lang, and Matt Gerald.

Avatar was released December 18th, 2009 and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel Moore, Giovanni Ribisi, Michelle Rodriguez, Laz Alonso. The film is directed by James Cameron.

If you rent it, you won't get the chance to experience the 3D. IF you have to, go to a second run theater that has Digital-3D....still not the same.

This isn't about academy awards, this is about a truly engrossing film experience, and you would be foolish t pass this up, unless you truly can't afford it, in which case, what the f*ck are you doing sitting on a computer. Go work!

Newkill (the real one, who should end himself), no one is comparing this to TDK except you. Is it no longer okay for a film to do decently, make a profit, and become a studio success? Does it have to set the number one gross record of all time?

2 things... 1.) the story for avatar would not stand on its own if the visuals were not impressive. people say this because, again, its a JAMES CAMERON movie.

    2. dark knight over-rated? thats probably the funniest thing i have ever heard

newkill it's just your opinion.. its a fact that you hate all movies..

but if avatar sucked so much why does it then have 8.9 on imdb and is 25# on the 250 List
and has 83% on RT ?

even Roger Ebert gives it 4 stars..

Dark Knight is just an overrated emo film

hey people AVATAR is at number 25 in the top 250 movies on IMDB... i bet this will take off in the box office soon...

PS.. dont see Twilight in the top 250 maybe in the worst top 50, twilight only made big money because we girls are all mindless movie going all they want is a sh-t love story... and when the third one is out they will go nuts again SO SAD

Saturday, Avatar dropped 5 percent down from Friday. Then today, it's estimated drop is 20.7 percent. Oh yeah, definitely a James Cameron bomb.

One of the rules of screenwriting is "Can your story stand on it's own WITHOUT a big budget, actors or visuals?" I honestly think that Avatar's story can. If you pitched a logline to someone about this movie I bet a good bit would interested. Especially if you throw in that it was a mix of Fern Gully and Dances with wolves.
I have said this a hundred times movies that already ESTABLISHED will 9/10 make more money than movies that aren't. An exception is Titanic. And of course Toy Story will make triple, it's practically a house hold name.

This was a good movie James Cameron and fox did a poor job of promoting this movie slot of people still don't know about this movie I work at a movie theater and people who were buying 2d tickets didn't know you suppose to watch it in 3d

  22. T.Clark

    Yeah, I am a fanboy.

I was just expecting some more effort into the performances and writing from Cameron than just an emphasis on visuals. I like it...I just wasn't blown away.

    3 years agoby @insertusernamehereFlag

  23. -comrade-

...Again, I don't see anything bad with what Cameron did...has he ever done something ridiculous like say "It'll be the next gone with the wind"? No. And FOX has been really conservative with their advertising too. I just think you're trying to save face because you were disappointed in hype that nobody built up but you. Remember, you are a fanboy. Nothing you do can escape that.

I didn't hate it. But I didn't love it either. So I must just be an exception, or you're wrong.

I don't deny it'll be a classic down the line and I won't have a problem with that. But I think the biggest it has going for it are the visuals. Substance in the environment on Pandora is its strongest feature. The tree falling was pretty moving and the final battle is cool but it's a two and half hour movie that Jame Cameron only hyped up because of the technology he put into it. Nothing else.
