Armie Hammer confirmed as the Lone Ranger
Jerry Bruckheimer will produce, and Gore Verbinski will direct from a screenplay by Justin Haythe. While the film is titled Lone Ranger, Armie Hammer will actually be taking a backseat to sidekick Tonto, played by Johnny Depp, who is actually the brains of this Western duo.
Lone Ranger is set to be Jerry Bruckheimer's next tentpole picture after Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides runs its course.
While there is no set release date for Lone Ranger, Walt Disney Pictures hopes to have the film in theaters by fall of 2012.
The Lone Ranger comes to theaters July 3rd, 2013 and stars Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Ruth Wilson, Helena Bonham Carter, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Tom Wilkinson, James Frain. The film is directed by Gore Verbinski.

The last thing i saw with Depp that i really enjoyed was Public Enemys, i grow tired of the "safe" movies with Disney and am really SICK of seeing him with Burrton and his wife . I just want to see something diff. out of Depp like Ememys and Tonto is a figures role for him but i'll still go see this because i'm sure it will be good enough....sigh

Don't think of it as Tonto being the "main character," but the Lone Ranger being the main character, just from Tonto's perspective. Like, The Shawshank Redemption. Freeman's character was the narrator, but Robbins' character was still largely the focus. I think it's a good idea as long as the Ranger's importance isn't undermined. Like I said, he's still the title character after all.

i agree with the majority who think it's lame that depp is the focus of the movie, which is titled, THE LONE RANGER. i realize that depp is the bigger star here but still. and the whole "movie from totno's point of view" just makes no sense. the idea itself is asanine. does anyone here actually give a sh*t about tontos point of view? seriously?
@braniac i agree with you on how depp seems to take over every movie he's in, even when he has a supporting role. though in the case of AIW, you have to remember it was directed by burton, who, for some reason, cannot make a single movie without making johnny depp the supreme center of focus of it. big fish aside. and AIW was pure crap anyway. not burton or depps finest hour.
really not looking forward to THE LONE RANGER NOW. plus it's being done by disney, which adds another strike, in my book. pass on this one.

@thebd I still think Depp is good, but highly over exposed to us. One doesn't appreciate an actor or performance nearly as much when they're in everything and stealing the lime light from others. Armie Hammer has a potentially bright future ahead of him, so I'm happy he got this, but yeah, he'll only be playing 2nd fiddle.
Really, the only Depp movie I honestly want to see is the Dark Shadows one.

oh plus the fact that the movie is called Lone Ranger, and the main character is actually Depp's Tonto annoys the sh*t out of me too. i hate that Depp's star power and influence will make him the main character of the Lone Ranger movie and that the Mad Hatter was pretty much the main character of Alice in Wonderland. he is just bein douchie.

@thrashnasty190 dude i agree with u again. Olyphant is the sh*t and would have done awesome, but Armie is cool and i'd like to see him get more work so i'm cool with this.
i actually am annoyed that Johnny Depp is in this, i just don't care for him anymore, it seems like he is phoning in everything he has done since Sweeny Todd.

@insertusernamehere That is how it is. They stated that when the film was first announced. It'll be an origin story with the main focus being on Tonto's point of view.

"While the film is titled Lone Ranger, Armie Hammer will actually be taking a backseat to sidekick Tonto, played by Johnny Depp, who is actually the brains of this Western duo."
That might be over exaggerating a bit. Obviously I don't know the story structure of the film, but this article is kind of undermining the Ranger's importance. He is after all still the title character and this is an origin story. I think a better way of putting it would be by labeling Tonto as the narrator, telling the Ranger's story from his perspective. At least, that's what I've gathered.
