Variety reports that Andy Garcia has attached Anthony Hopkins and Annette Bening to star with him in Hemingway and Fuentes.

Garcia is going to direct the movie from a script that he wrote with Hilary Hemingway, granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway.

The film will look at the two decades that Hemingway spent in Cuba fishing with his best friend, Gregorio Fuentes. While there, the author fell in love with an Italian girl who prompted him to write "The Old Man and the Sea."

Garcia is going to play Fuentes, and Bening will play Hemingway's third wife, Mary Welsh Hemingway.

Garcia has been interested in the project since the 1970s, when his love of offshore fishing brought him into contact with some of the grizzled fisherman who worked alongside the writer in Cuba in the 1940s and '50s.

"I was specifically most interested in Hemingway's connection to Cuba, where he spent the last 20 years of his life, and his relationship with his last captain, Gregorio," Garcia stated. "As an avid fisherman, I got to know older Cuban fisherman who knew Gregorio from the fishing culture of the 40s and 50s, and who would compete in tournaments outside the city of Havana, which was really the beginning of competitive fishing."

Garcia put together a script but put it aside when he made 2005's The Lost City. He met Hemingway's granddaughter via a mutual friend, and they started working on a script that is set within the fishing adventures Hemingway and Fuentes experienced aboard Pilar, the 34 foot Wheeler Playmate boat.

With the casting of Hopkins, Garcia feels that he can now put together the financing to make the picture in the summer of 2010. He plans to shoot along the Caribbean rim. This location will stand in for Ketchum, Idaho, where Hemingway eventually moved and committed suicide.
