Ang Lee's Lust, Caution Gets an NC-17 Rating

Ang Lee, the director who pushed boundaries with his controversial Brokeback Mountain, has just earned an NC-17 rating for his latest film Lust, Caution. According to Variety, Focus Features, the studio behind the erotic espionage thriller, is okay with releasing it as-is.

The film was co-written by Focus' CEO James Schamus and Wang Hui Ling. The plot is based on a short story by Eileen Chang, and revolves around a shy Chinese drama student who gets pulled into an assassination plot against a Japanese collaborator during WWII. The film, which is in Mandarin, is Focus' main Oscar hopeful.

Schamus stated, "As with so many of his previous films, Oscar-winning director Ang Lee has crafted a masterpiece about and for grown-ups." While the MPAA didn't state why the film got an NC-17, it is known that the film does depict extended and vigorous lovemaking in a variety of provocative sexual positions.

The film will premier at the Toronto Fest. Then it wil play Gotham on September 28th. It will expand to additional cities on October 5th.

Lust, Caution was released September 28th, 2007 and stars Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Wei Tang, Joan Chen, Lee-Hom Wang, Chung Hua Tou, Chih-ying Chu, Ying-hsien Kao, Ko Yu-Luen. The film is directed by Ang Lee.

This is a must see movie. Ang Lee has done it again! As I exit from the theatre to my car there was just utter silence. It was shocking to see Tony Leung so exposed, but yet the whole film did not feel pornographic. Ang Lee's filming is just superb. He totally captured the audience's heart the same way that Tang Wei and Tony Leung did to each other...without notice. I felt all of the elements after I watched the film - love in Lust, loneliness in Caution. I can't wait for it to land in the theatres. I am definitely going to see it again!
