Andrew Garfield Talks Spider-Man Reboot

Andrew Garfield discusses the Spider-Man reboot
We haven't heard much from Andrew Garfield since he won the coveted role of Peter Parker in Sony's upcoming Untitled Spider-Man Reboot. The Hollywood Reporter recently spoke with the actor at the Telluride Film Festival, where he made his first statements about becoming Peter Parker. Here's what Andrew Garfield had to say about the process:

"I have been waiting for this phone call for 24 years, for someone to call me up and say, 'Hey, we want you to pretend to be a character that you've always wanted to be all your life, and we're going to do it with cool cameras and cool effects and you're going to feel like you're swinging through New York City. Do you want to do that?' [laughs] 'Let me just consult with my seven-year old self and see what he thinks...' So my seven-year-old self started screaming in my soul and saying, This is what we've been waiting for. Like every young boy who feels stronger on the inside than they look on the outside, any skinny boy basically who wishes their muscles matched their sense of injustice, God, it's just the stuff that dreams are made of, for sure. It's a true f**king honor to be part of this symbol that I actually think is a very important symbol and it's meant a great deal to me, and it continues to mean something to people. So yeah, I feel like I've been preparing for it for a while. Ever since Halloween when I was four years old and I wore my first Spider-Man costume."

Garfield went onto report that the movie, which will be directed by Marc Webb, is gearing up to shoot in December. The actor added that he wants to perform in a play after his Untitled Spider-Man Reboot experience. Garfield also appears in The Social Network, which arrives in theaters October 1, and he spoke about working with director David Fincher as well:

"It was just the greatest, really. The amount of trust that you feel for him, that you can place all of your trust in him if you're a fan of his work. Which I am, I'm a fan of all of his movies so I love his taste and I love the performances that he gets from people, that he edits from people. So going into it like that, you go, "I can let go." You can let go in a scene, and you don't have to worry about doing what you want to do because you know that whatever he's got in mind is going to be better than what you want to do. He does do a lot of takes."

The Amazing Spider-Man comes to theaters July 3rd, 2012 and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Denis Leary, Chris Zylka, Irrfan Khan, C. Thomas Howell. The film is directed by Marc Webb.

The Social Network was released October 1st, 2010 and stars Jesse Eisenberg, Rooney Mara, Bryan Barter, Dustin Fitzsimons, Armie Hammer, Joseph Mazzello, Patrick Mapel, Max Minghella. The film is directed by David Fincher.

I don't know Diaigma, but I plan on not bringing up these types of discussions anymore. However, unlike the other guy, Thoth here at least can support his claims.

@Thoth, Honestly, I don't have the time to do anymore research into this topic right now. I will say that I talked to two professors at my college, and they debunked Stolen Legacy as well, although they are admittedly Western educated. I won't say that they are wrong or right, as I won't say that to you, either. When I do get the time,I will look into this further, and make my own decisions based on the evidence I see to be true. I have a feeling that I will find the truth somewhere in the middle. Anyways, have fun on other topics on this site. Hopefully, we can debate other things, although not with such serious fare:)

I'm an English major, so Metaphysics isn't my thing. But I would like you to review Lefkowitz's article and tell me your thoughts on it.

I'm sorry, Thoth, but I'm going to need something else than Stolen Legacy. That book is very controversial, and not very accurate about history. An example of this is how Aristotle began teaching a thirteen year old Alexander in Stagira. In an article she wrote, Dr. Mary Lefkowitz of Wellesley University basically thrashed the book; I'll give you a web site to look at to read her article at the end of this post. Now, you can say she is an anti-Afrocentrist, so her words are meaningless to you, and that's fine. However, others seem to think this book is garbage. I don't know which one is true, but if one side says one thing, and the other says the complete opposite, then I'm inclined to believe the truth is somewhere in the middle. My friend REAL posted that he looked it up on Wikipedia, and that what you say is true, but you as a professor and I as a student realize that Wikipedia is not credible. In no way am I trying to debunk you theory, but I need something better than a book filled with suppositions, assumptions, and distortions of chronology to fully agree with you. Final point: Herodotus is known as "The Father of History," but he's also known as "The Father of Lies" due to accounts of battles and the like that were impossible to have happened the way he wrote them to have happened. His words cannot be the basis of your theory, either, due to lack of credibility.

fans will be more ecstatic if they see Peter Parker walking in the lab experiments which was primordial for him becoming Spider-Man! Also, please let it be web shooters this time, he's a genius for crying out loud, let hime explore it and it will give more fantastic suspenseful scenes which the Director can use for the film.

I wasn't being flippant in my last post, either. My school doesn't have an Egyptian Civilization class, so to hear from an expert is great.

You're right, Thoth, I don't know enough about Egyptian History. Thanks for clearing all that up. But from the sculptures that I have seen from both cultures, the Egyptians only created only stiff and formal depictions of man, while the Greeks created sculptures of fluid motion. Also, please let me know if the playwright's of Greece such as Sophocles and Aristophanes or authors like Homer and Sappho stole ideas from the Egyptians. It honestly would color my world a different shade, since much of my college life has been spent in studying them. Also fill in any blanks about Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. Your stuff on Alexander has holes, though. He had already conquered Greece when he arrived in Egypt and liberated the Egyptians from Persian rule. He ordered Alexandria to be built on the mouth of the Nile as a strategic post for military and trading purposes, but never actually saw the final design of the city(at least this is what I'm told, and by all means feel free to clear any mistakes up).

As for any ruffled feathers here, I wasn't trying to show you up, just expressing what is obviously an uninformed and clearly one-sided opinion. If you can, please recommend some books on Egyptian history.

I thought it was the Romans that stole ideas from the Greeks. Granted every civilization probably borrows/copies to a degree another successful civilization/country/state, but if you're going to use an analogy like that, I think it would be more accurate with the Roman/Greek angle.

@Thoth, I agree with what you said about the X-Men and Spider-Man series, in particular where writers mess things up, but where the hell were you going with Greeks v. Egyptians? The Greeks didn't steal culture from Egyptians- their artistry is very different, even more refined. Yes, the Egyptians did come first, but Greek culture comes out of the Proto Indo-European background. 2000 years of ignorance? Sorry, but Greek culture-it's art, philosophy, science, and mathematics set it far beyond Egypt. The Sphinx and Pyramids are impressive, as are the ruins of Uruk for that matter, but the Parthenon is called "the perfect building" for a reason; it's architecture is so mathematically sound it's unbelievable. Don't get me wrong, Egypt is fascinating, but Greece has had a much greater, everlasting influence.

idk about this, my aunts and cousins really love all three and many others who love them but me I really don't care about the whole trilogy, they all sucked to my eyes. Anycase this only will work with a new telling beginning, so far batman & superman beginnings can be told in many cool emotional ways which i truly can't see how spiderman can, but they can prove me wrong.

@IAMFRATSON, dude why do everyone keep blaming Sony for the movie bombing? If anything it was Marvel producers that help make the movie bad, because if you at the doc*mentary it was Ari Avad(Marvel Producers since everyone say's Marvel can do no wrong) that said he was the one that made Raimi put Venom in the movie because the fans really, really wanted Venom in the movie(I can attest to that, so I will take part of the blame lol) Then sony was not the one responsible for bad dialogue, all the crying, and the dance number lol That was all Raimi. Sony could careless what he did because of all the money they were making from the movie, they practically gave him a blank check(thats what happens sometimes when you give a person too much power lol) Another thing they were will to give Raimi and crew another shot with the Script written by the guy that wrote Zodiac but No Raimi wanted another script written where he had Peter have a kid and take on the Vulture and shudder the Vultress (don't get me wrong Ane Hathaway is hot but the Vultress WTF lol) Sony said Raimi pack your bags and get out with that crap we are rebooting this thing and using the Zodiac guys script lol

  19. I AM FRATSON

I am completely ok with the reboot. I believe it was needed. The first and esp the second were good. However I never felt Tobey was a good fit for Peter, and same with Dunst as MJ. The third bombed due to the studio. Raimi wanted to have Vulture and Sandman in prison, being cellmates, and they sort of join forces. Studio didnt think that the Vulture could carry as the villian and wanted a better known, Venom. We all know this by now and since they made Venom a little bitch in the movie, it was due to get rebooted.

Im all for this reboot, esp if they can execute it like most of us have said in the past with building the characters and relationships that need to be built.

The rumor was that Raimi was casting Anne Hathaway to play Felicia Harding. That would be fine with me, except that instead of being the Black Cat, Felicia was going to be the Vultress. Shortly after this news broke out, a reboot was decided upon, a decision that I thoroughly praise.

It's part of the whole reason(Spider-Man 3) that we are being given a reboot. Raimi either ran out of ideas, or simply lost the desire to give us a good story. If it's between a reboot, and a movie with the "Vultress," I'll take the reboot every time.

I think it'll be refreshing NOT hearing about Spidey obsess about MJ in the 1st installment. I agree @ejk1, it doesn't have to be darker, just avoid the whole "emo" route that Spidey 3 took. That whole dancing segment was one of the most cringe-worthy scenes I've seen in quite a while.

Romance was always a part of Spidey. In fact, it's a reason I was drawn into the story. The original three went too far, I agree, but having Gwen as the interest first up, gives me hope.
