MMm, your comments have nothing to do with what anyone was talking about. Your the one who brought up some damn Campbell theory, which had nothing to do with Terminator. I guess you'll do anything for attention.

Yeah, newkill. I don't know what to say to your retort because I don't get it. It doesn't have anything to do with what I said. But I kind of agreeing you but what you have to understand this:

No story is completely "original" because the bar bones skeletal structure of a stories are all the same. That why there are only a certain number of real "stories". Every other one after those are just variations on the same structure but with different characters and places added.

That's what I wanted you to know. Not anything about Terminator.

Again, Again, you don't get it. Just because it's not as specific as Terminator doesn't mean that Terminator is not original. First you crazy about Philips Dick, now when i proved you wrong on that you switch over to Campbell. Just face it. Terminator is original. Dude your going through all this work to show that Avatar isn't the only unoriginal movie out. You could've picked anyone of Tarantino's movies. Come on, Josh. I'm glad your done talking. It just proves my point that you really had nothing to say and your just trying to sound like your making points but your really not. So in that case, you've OWNED yourself, in a way.

    1) You didn't even read his post correctly. He said that Campbell's formula was NOT as specific as the plot of Terminator.

    2) Take a class on storytelling. Campbell's work is widely known. I'm an English major. You are a child.

    3) I'm done talking to you. I eagerly await the option to hide your obnoxious ass.

Josh, lol, you are so full of sh*t. If you were going with the Campbell theory, you would have been said that. Aliens was not the same world as Alien. It was done very differently. Also, the Campbell theory is bullsh*t, to kill the mother of the savior, come on mmm. Seriously, that's what i'm talking about. Stop just reaching for anything. Your not even looking at it right. Just because the guys mother is being chased that makes T1 not original. Seriously take your head out of your f*cking ass.

  13. Josh

Yes, exactly. Campbell's theory is where I was going with my post below about the concept of "originality".

Newkill are you trying to get made fun of? Second Variety wasn't written AFTER Terminator, it was published in 1953. It involves a postapocalyptic future with robot assassins who look like humans. Sound familiar?

As for Aliens, of course that wasn't original it was a sequel fer chrissake! Cameron didn't create that world, Ridley Scott did.

And with all of this, I'm not trying to slag on Cameron at all. I'm just saying that "originality" is both a loaded and an overrated concept.

Well actually, it's a widely known, talked about by like Joseph Campbell, that there are like 30 or so master story lines. I mean they aren't as specific as a robot that comes from the future to kill the mother of the savior of man. They're like hero undergoes tradegy, must go on journey to find goal, hero earns retribution.

Read Joseph Campbell's the power of myth and like The Hero with 1000 Faces.

terminator is not an original story, it is actually a complete copy of the Nativity story... Jesus Christ being John Connor, who later becomes the leader of a revolution.. so, every story that is actually conveyed on film is borrowed from somewhere; it could be religion, greek mythology, different world cultures, and soo on. the moder version of the nativity story, being the robot revolution, was something original...

And if you can't find anything Josh, let me just tell you. Second Variety was 1989, five years after the first Terminator movie. So, as you can see, Terminator, completely original. And in that booklet of his works, it lists movies like Blade Runner and many other sci fi. Yes, Dick has tributes a lot but if you would follow the guys works, you see no type of relations towards Terminator. Just because a book has a robot in it and it's in the category of sci fi, doesn't mean Terminator is not original. Terminator is very original friend.

Come on, Josh, you seem like a smart dude. And you realize there's a difference from really pointing out facts and just reaching for pointless sh*t to make something fit. Terminator is purely original dude. You should have done your homework on Philip before you brought up that comment. Also, you didn't have anything to say about Aliens.

Haha. Jesus. At least it's some some BS adaptation that they'll get wrong, or some washed up superhero garbage. Avatar is gonna be awesome.

  20. Josh

Seriously? Read Second Variety by Philip K Dick if you think Terminator is a purely original story. Dick is the inspiration for almost every science fiction film of the past 30 years.

Thank you, Josh, for making my point that Avatar isn't original. And Aliens wasn't a borrowed plot. T1 and T2 weren't borrowed. You see where i'm going with this. Cameron is known best for his original pieces. not this bullsh*t.

The Last Samurai was also a plot borrowed from Dances with Wolves, but I loved that movie.

Star Wars was a plot borrowed from The Hidden Fortress, and just about every Kurosawa film was a plot borrowed from Shakespeare. And Hamlet was a plot borrowed from a previously-existing story.
Brothers borrows plot elements from Homer and LOST is an amalgamation of over a dozen other stories.

My point? It's not how original your story is, it's what you add to it, how interesting you make it, and how well you tell it. That's why war movies can keep getting made and keep being relevant and interesting, because they always ring true.

The reason Avatar is relevant is because it is socially-conscious today just like Dances with Wolves was when it came out.

yeah, your right jameslev, it is based on a true story. Sad thing is that the same stories like the one in Titantic were told many times before. It might be true but original no way. Titanic is his worse movie, unless Avatar becomes worse.
Superjerk, i'm sick of people like you telling me to keep my comments to myself on a site that invites comments. If you don't like what i have to say just f*cking ignore.
