While at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this morning, Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm announced that a new Star Wars movie will be released every summer for the foreseeable future starting with Star Wars: Episode VII in 2015.
A new Star Wars movie is coming every summer starting in 2015
Star Wars: Episode VII is set to launch a new trilogy that will be a continuation of Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi, with fan favorite characters Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia all expected to return. This trilogy will alternate every summer with the previously reported standalone films, the first of which will be released in 2016.
While an Untitled Star Wars Han Solo Spin-Off and an Untitled Star Wars Boba Fett Spin-Off have been rumored to be in the works, no official standalone title has been announced. It is also expected that Yoda and Jabba the Hutt may get their own movies. While these films are being released in the summertime, no official release date has been announced. It is also not known how many standalone films are planned, but there will be at least three to coincide with the new trilogy.
J.J. Abrams is directed from a screenplay by Michael Arndt. The film is expected to be released in May of 2015.
