Is Indiana Jones 5 No Longer Mutt William's Movie?

Source:  MTV Movie Blogs
MTV Movie Blogs recently caught up with George Lucas at the press day for Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and they of course asked him about the proposed Indiana Jones 5 sequel, which was originally supposed to center around Shia LaBeouf's Mutt Williams character.

As of this moment, the famed director is thinking in another direction. It seems that Mutt won't be the central focus of a fifth film at all, and he might not even return for a cameo in the proposed film. Lucas told MTV Movie Blogs, "Indiana Jones is Indiana Jones. Harrison Ford IS Indiana Jones. If it was Mutt Williams it would be 'Mutt Williams and the Search for Elvis' or something."

About the next installment, Lucas would only say, "We ARE looking for something for him to go after. They are very hard to find. It's like archeology. It takes a huge amount of research to come up with something that will fit."

At this time, Indiana Jones Part 5 is merely an idea swimming around inside George Lucas' head. There is no telling if it will ever come to fruition.

If they do another, its cool with me. As long as they at least make Mutt a major part of the movie. I mean 'Father-Son' stuff again that they could do some good stuff with. I liked Shia's character and the job he did as him. :]

shia labeouf is all hype, he's been in summer candy movies since i've been aware of him, surly after indiana jones, tranformers and the almost a remake of rear window he would have made an impact but....no.
Indiana jones rocks, i'm just sayin i dont think that guy could carry harrisons shoes.
indy rocks

Indy 4 had its flaws, but enjoyable. they should just end it, Indy is gettin freakin old now, no offense Mr. Ford. the next thing you know they are gonna have to CGI Indy running or perhaps taking out his whip because Harrison isnt flexible enough!

no no no! Do NOT I repeat not make a 5. George Lucus has lost his touch his last few films. The Phantom Menace, Indy 4 were just worthless. The Clone Wars should bring him back on track though.

i think it should stop with 4. Harrison's old, Shia's in trouble and he #4 wasn't as good as the originals so they should quit while they're falling a bit behind.

First of all,Indy 4 got a critic average of a B- and rotten tomatoe average of 78%, which isn't that bad and I liked it,just not loved it.I'm not sure about this.

The 4th was iffy, but enjoyable, without high expectations
(which I didn't have) and therefore, it was cool. A bit corny, and the aliens wee too far fetched. Just lighten up on the cheesiness, keep Ford, and go back to Christianity adventures, involve his family, get a new girl in there, not necessarily a gf, just a girl. If they do this with the next one, and make it within three years, then it will be kick ass! I mean It may be a bit selfish, but the Indi series is like one of the best original franchises of their day, and he should go out with a bang.

Hmmm I don't know about this one...A lot of people thought a 4th one would be pushing it and some how it managed to pass, but a 5th Indie??? I think that would be pushing it...

FUCK aliens in an Indiana Jones movie dude!! If I wanted to watch a movie about aliens, I'd watch X-Files 1 or AVP or Close Encounters, E.T. or some shit. That is why half the Indy Jones fans HATED the Indy 4 movie, and it got criticized BAD!! It sucked.

THANK YOU LORD! My praying has paid off! Finally George Lucas realizes that and Indiana Jones Movie without Indiana Jones, wouldnt be an Indiana Jones movie. He has finally got something right. I mean, I know there we ALOT of criticisms about Indy 4, which were legitamate, but it was over all enjoyable (for more info on my opinion check my review) Now that he realizes that Shia shouldnt take over, I now lift my boycott on another Indy movie being made. I would like to see maybe one more, just for shits and giggles. Maybe something like Atlantis or something that doesnt have to do with aliens. But i am not saying I didnt like the new idea of aliens, i would just like to see it move in another direction

omg George finally realized that Shia will never make a good Indy replacement. If it goes back to Christianity it might be good cuz the 1st and 3rd one explored that the 2nd one was like vodoo stuff

There's no one I can think of off the top of my head who could fit the bill. Then again, Indy's age is marked now thanks to 4. No since hiring someone younger if the story takes place after 1957, unless its a prequel, but that's pushing it, or unless they start it all over again. That might not go over so well. Long live Ford!

Well, that's cool. I don't expect everyone to agree with my thoughts... or ANYONE for that matter.

Like I said before... Harrison IS Indiana Jones. I just think that eventually trying a new actor is not as bad as you all make it out. Just my opinion. (shrugging my shoulders)

Well I once again do not agree with you MB123. The second I see a trailer or even get wind of an Indiana Jones movie with another actor besides Ford portraying Indy, I will skip it altogether. And I think others will too. James Bond is very different.

And as for the story to this thread, I didn't really care for Mutt's character anyway.

Well I'll go to Physco's question, who will replace Ford. I think he's a pretty unique actor, and I just can't think of other 'Fords' out there. The only one who comes close is Joe Flanery, who plays Col. Sheppard in SG Atlantis. But that series is mainstream, and has quite a good few years yet to run I would imagine. Indy is a huge mantle to pick up, and I seriously can't think of a viable alternative at the moment. Like I said (and you said), Bond is an iconic character, but overall, he's less complex than Indy. He's a suave assassin, but also single-minded in his objective. Apart from that, unlike Indy, no one actor has played Bond for nearly 30 years, and I guess I'm accustomed to having multiple Bond actors all my life.

All I'm saying is if they need a younger actor to take the Indy franchise forward, they really need to get it spot on. Even with Ford, Indy 4 faced a negative backlash from many fans, but I don't think it's killed the series. I think another below par film with an unknown actor would definitely kill it off.

Thank God ...No Mutt!!! But I think it's time to put this idea of a part 5 to rest. Call it a day!

And yes... Jason Bourne is a reboot (or remake). Whichever you want to call it. The actor who played Jason Bourne in the 1988 version of The Bourne Identity was Richard Chamberlain.

I see where you're coming from Turok... but each and every actor who plays James Bond imprints their own version of the character. Some are good and some are...well, not so good. Connery was the tough, ladies man... Roger Moore was the more goofy one (with all the stupid one liners)... George Lazenby was just a pretty boy who's forgettable... Pierce Brosnan was the suave, elegant one (I guess they all were to a point)... Timothy Dalton was just bad casting... and Daniel Craig is once again the rough, tough, and gritty James Bond. They all portayed the character a little diffent BUT it hasn't stopped anyone from seeing the movies.

I personally like the character Indiana Jones and we, as an audience, need to realize that one actor can't alway play that role (due to the aging process haha) even though he or she perfected it. Harrison Ford IS Indiana Jones just as much as Sean Connery IS James Bond (to many), but that didn't stop the character from flourishing. There's been 22 James Bond movies.

Indiana Jones is iconic just like James Bond. I think it can continue flourishing with other actors as long as the stories are done properly and they cast a decent Indiana Jones.
