2010 Academy Awards to Feature 10 Best Picture Nominees!

Source:  Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
The 82nd Academy Awards, which will be presented on March 7, 2010, will have 10 feature films vying in the Best Picture category, Academy Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Sid Ganis announced today (June 24) at a press conference in Beverly Hills.

"After more than six decades, the Academy is returning to some of its earlier roots, when a wider field competed for the top award of the year," said Ganis. "The final outcome, of course, will be the same - one Best Picture winner - but the race to the finish line will feature 10, not just five, great movies from 2009."

For more than a decade during the Academy's earlier years, the Best Picture category welcomed more than five films; for nine years there were 10 nominees. The 16th Academy Awards (1943) was the last year to include a field of that size; Casablanca was named Best Picture. (In 1931/32, there were eight nominees and in 1934 and 1935 there were 12 nominees.)

Currently, the Academy is presenting a bicoastal screening series showcasing the 10 Best Picture nominees of 1939, arguably one of Hollywood's greatest film years. Best Picture nominees of that year include such diverse classics as Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Stagecoach, The Wizard of Oz and Best Picture Winner Gone With the Wind.

"Having 10 Best Picture nominees is going allow Academy voters to recognize and include some of the fantastic movies that often show up in the other Oscar categories, but have been squeezed out of the race for the top prize," commented Ganis. "I can't wait to see what that list of ten looks like when the nominees are announced in February."

The 82nd Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, February 2. The Oscar ceremony honoring films for 2009 will again take place at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and will be televised live by the ABC Television Network.

I think this is a great idea. Now movies that aren't in the top 5 will get the exposure they deserve. And to ridgl, I think TDK would've been in the top 10 last year.

Wall-E and the Dark Knight still wouldn't be nominated for best picture last year anyway. The reason: there is NO justice in the world.
I don't know how I feel. A ten film song at the beginning might get tedious.

@David, Pixar will never receive a Best Picture nom because there's a little thing called Best Animated Feature.

it sounds good if they do that maybe time to take out sound and set design and dress and put that on the tech awards or if the do 10 they cant say them one by one the show is long now so if they have 10 they have list them all off one time i dont know are get every one there at 4pm and start at 6pm

You know what. I take that comment back about the nominations. There should be ten noms. Just look at O8,The Dark Knight, Doubt, Changeling , Revolutionary Road , The Wrestler should have been nominated and they werent, 07-Sweeney Todd, American Gangster, Into the Wild, Charlie Wilson's War, Hairspray should have been nominated, and going back to 2004-The Passion of the Christ , Fahrenheit 9/11, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and
Spider-Man 2 should have been nominated but wasn't. So i'm glad there giving this thought into making more nomination spots.

They should have fucking did this shit this year and nominated Dark Knight. But i do agree with you comrade, 10 noms are way too much. If they have one open space, what are they going to do, nominate Transformer 2, god i hope not.

I really feel this is unnecessary. It's not like there are so many oscar-worthy films spewing out of Hollywood that we have to make room for them. TDK was good, but it was NOT Best Picture worthy. Gran Torino, maybe, but Wall-E was nowhere close to good enough to be considered for Best Picture. It was just self-aware cuteness. Maybe if Pixar puts out something genuine instead of cash cows they'll deserve it.

For those of you who say, "It will still be down to the same number of films, this way more people get the honor of being nominated." then you're just cheapening that honor.

Again, I agree with the Raoul Duke :P

Actually, maybe it was TDK getting snubbed that made them decide to do this :P

Should have done this last year. Then The Dark Knight, Gran Torino, and WALL-E wouldn't have been snubbed.

I hope this announcement will not spur the term: "scraping the bottom of the barrel," with the exception of worthy films such as Shutter Island, Inglorious Basterds, and Public Enemies (as yet to be seen). Maybe the Academy took heat for snubbing The Dark Knight and Revolutionary Road for (at least) a nomination.

yeah, i was thinking the same thing.
when is the last time ten "great" films came out of hollywood in one year?

June 24th, 2009 11:49am
I don't know about this...
They'll be stretching to find ten 'great' films; and it might thin out worthy films chances.

The Lovely Bones for Best Picture.
