Michael Caine Confirms Johnny Depp and Seymour Philip Hoffman for Batman 3

Source:  MTV's Splashpage
Movie PictureCasting rumors for the next Christopher Nolan-directed Batman have run rampant ever since The Dark Knight opened, with one of the most persistent being Johnny Depp as the Riddler. Michael Caine spoke to MTV recently, where he confirmed the rumor.

Even with Depp recently being non-committal about the role, Caine still says that Depp is a lock for the Riddler, and Philip Seymour Hoffman will be the Penguin.

Caine said:
When Christopher [Nolan] said we were going to do The Dark Knight next, I didn't what that meant in Batman terms. I said, 'What's the story?' and he said The Joker. I said, 'Oh, s-t! How are you going to top Jack [Nicholson]?' He said, 'Well, I've cast Heath Ledger. And I went 'Ha! I couldn't top Jack, but if anyone could, maybe Heath could.' And he did.

I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, 'Are we going to make another one?' They said yeah. I said, 'How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says 'I'll tell you how you top Heath - Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.' I said, 'S-t, they've done it again!'" [Laughs]

So, while this still isn't a confirmed casting announcement, it certainly seems to add weight to the rumor.

Meanwhile, when asked if he had seen a script yet, Caine responded "No. He's gone. He'll come back with a script sometime."

No. Michael C. Hall from "Dexter", would be the best choice for the riddler. Don't get me wrong I'm a depp fan, but watch "Dexter" then try and disagree with me.

No, not "'NUFF SAID!!!" The best candidates for Batman 3, in my opinion, are Catwoman, Harley Quinn, and my favorite Batman villain of all, The Riddler. That's what I think should happen.

His performance in the Pirates franchise makes for a believable Riddler, provided it's psychological and not campy. Feel free to comment.

No shocker there but i want to see Mr.Freeze in the next one more than Catwomen.

Mr.Freeze, Riddler, and Peguin sounds better than Riddler,Peguin, and Catwomen

do i have a point?

interesting, i just actually read on wikipedia regarding kate beckinsale that she has expressed interest as well in playing catwoman... seems her and i have something in common after all.

i agree agent. the last films, did fall apart after the switch in directors. the first was warners film, the second certainly had more of burtons style and was a much more darker in tone and mythos film than the original. although burton did exec produce forever i think it became more of warners and schumachers film and lost the whole concept of what batman was and became huge "Action figure films" than a true "comic book movie". So i think if nolan excepts to do the third film (which time and big bags o money will tell) then he will continue to play out themes of batman that are important and keep a strong foundation of story like he has in the last two. And as an example just to prove your point and to show more support for your comment, although spider man 3 was not all that well liked, it still looked like spider man, and still had raimi's trademark... xmen switched and it became a whole new entity with ratners vision, the same with the first series of superman films.

beings how on every post of casting news it seems we are required to throw out our future requests for villians, i would certainly option for kate beckinsale (underworld) to be catwoman. i think she has the look of selina kyle, the body of catwoman, and is used to action and stunts, and does well enough at acting to make this role her own. Not sure of the hell i will get for this but i really think it would be a great casting choice for the future catwoman, granted it was not made in 6 or 7 years from now.

Caine gives the second best performance on the movie. I hope that the next one does have Depp. What else has he got to do now we're tired of the Pirates.

This isn't confirmed. Hoffman has said he hasn't been talked to about the role. It was a thread released after this one, too, so it's probably accurate to say depp hasn't been offered the role either

Depp + Hoffman sounds really exciting!!! I just hope this doesn't make the film too crowded. I spose we will just have to trust Nolan and wait and see...

Rufio, the last franchise fell apart due to the switch in directors. If nolan stays on board, i doubt it will turn the other way

So Warner is actually looking into the rumors of fans being of actual substance for casting a third film? Interesting. All that was confirmed here was that. Warner's looking into the idea, and that's all. Since Johnny said he never heard of the rumor until approached by reporters, and Phillip heard from a friend, and seems interested.

We'll wait for Nolan to return from his vacation to see if he wants to go forward with "3" immediately, shelve it for later, or not do it at all.

In the meantime, David S. Goyer could be writing a script, or at least toying around with plot ideas.

I still don't know if this is true. I think I'll only believe it when Nolan is the one confirming the story. Although I'm happy with these actors. Very happy.

I have much respect to Philip Seymour Hoffman. He's a terrific actor, but I really don't think he should be a major villain in Batman 3. I think the Penguin may be best suited in the sequel downsized and downplayed within reason. Don't you guys think? And I know everyone is tired of hearing about Catwoman, but she has GOT to be in Batman 3; especially after the travesty of a movie in which Halle Barry played her. Having Catwoman returning reinvented would be a great way to redeem her name on-screen. Here are my actress picks, tell me what you guys think:

Sadie Frost
Bridget Moynahan
Lena Headey
