It didn't take a psychic to know that Iron Man would completely obliterate the box office this weekend. The Marvel Comic adaptation took in an estimated $100.7 million over the course of the last three days ($104 million if you count Thursday's take). By midday Friday, you could already find the film as a downloadable bootleg on the Internet, all of its secrets had been revealed, and those involved were loudly chirping, "Sequel". Iron Man is the first true success of both the summer and the year so far.
Coming in second place with a mere $15.5 million was the Patrick Dempsey romantic comedy (i.e. chick flick) Made of Honor. While some have called it a rip-off of Julia Robert's My Best Friend's Wedding, those not wanting robotic action-adventure totally fell in love with this wisp of confectioners candy. It came in as the perfect alternative.
A number of Independent films made quite a stir amidst all of the Iron Man hoopla. Harmony Korine's film Mister Lonely actually had the second highest per screen average, earning $19,100 on just one screen in New York. David Mamet's Redbelt took in $68,600 playing on just six screens. And Son of Rambow earned $52,500 on five screens.
Next weekend, Iron Man will face off against the kid friendly mega-epic Speed Racer while Made of Honor will have to duke it out with What Happens in Vegas for all of that filthy romantic comedy lucre. It should be one heck of a brawl.
