BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: High School Musical 3: Senior Year Sings Up $42 Million for the Top Spot

Source:  MovieWeb.com

Weekend Box Office

1) High School Musical 3: Senior Year $42 million
2) Saw V $30.5 million
3) Max Payne $7.6 million
4) Beverly Hills Chihuahua $6.9 million
5) Pride and Glory $6.3 million
6) The Secret Life of Bees
7) W.
8) Eagle Eye
9) Body of Lies
10) Quarantine

It was a blood battle at the box office this weekend. The kids of High School Musical 3: Senior Year went toe-to-toe with the notorious Jigsaw killer in Saw V. It was the singing and dancing combination of Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens that defeated and beat those gruesome traps, taking in $42 million for the top spot. Saw V didn't go down without a fight, though. Despite its run in second place, this fifth installment of the hugely popular horror franchise still managed to nab $30.5 million. That's about $1 million down from the last couple of sequels, but you can guess that those lost audience members got stuck taking their girlfriend or little sister to the above mentioned Disney juggernaught.

This weekend's only other new major release was Warner Brothers' Pride and Glory, which stars Colin Farrell and Edward Norton. The police drama dropped itself off in fifth place, taking in the small sum of $6.3 million. The film with the highest per screen average was Clint Eastwood's drama The Changeling. Starring Angelina Jolie, the film grabbed $502,000 playing on just 15 screens.

A few other small releases did quite well for themselves this weekend. The Logo Series big screen adaptation Noah's Arc: Jumping the Broom drew in $32,200 from just five screens, giving it the second highest per screen average of the weekend. And Charlie Kaufman's strange horror drama Synecdoche, New York came in with the third highest per screen average, delivering $19,222 worth of ticket sales on nine screens. Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas 3-D was re-released on 284 screens and brought in $372,000. While the Anne Hathaway drama Passengers found enough people willing to give it a look for $185,00 on 125 screens.

Look for the kids of High School Musical 3: Senior Year to stay ahead of the pack next week when their only real competition is the raunchy Kevin Smith comedy Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

@ Crypt: Homosexuals, teenage girls who drag their boyfriends to the theater, and elementary students...that's how.

Also, rape, bestiality, murder, child pornography, incest, religious wars, drug overdose, Sarah Palin, etc...that's what makes this a sick world. HSM3 getting #1 just makes it a way-too-easily-entertained world.

ALSO, how did this get #1 when it seems as if everyone here agrees that this movie shouldn't even be on the top 10.

This is a sick world we are living in. I'd see any movie on that list, before I see High School Musical 3. Yes, that's including that retarded Chihuahua thing.

Everyone knew this would happen but people want something to talk about and keep their lives busy, so they argue pointlessly, about something they can't change, no offense. So seriously chill. But while we're on the subject, and since this is a box office thread, I bet 007 will make at least 95 to 105 mill in the first weekend. Hopefully cuz we all know it would deserve it. lol.

why so defensive JR? Geez man, did someone piss on your corn flakes this morning? It's just a movie, if you like it you like it, if you don't you don't. No need to get so personal over it.

I have standards man sorry. God forbid.

The only movie that was "good" that had singing and dancing was Grease. Not even Sweeney Todd was that appealing. And it was violent as fuck.

actually chad i was referring to your comment: "So if YOU want to make yourself stupidier by watching something that excites 8 year olds, then be my guest. It's your brain after all. "

Why would a musical make me dumber? Seriously. I mentioned Harold and Kumar 2 because it WAS a movie that I felt dumber after watching(as in it was a shit movie, not 8 year olds are going to watch it. dur.) BTW I listen to bands. It just seems that you have something against singing and dancing, and that to me is not enough of a reason to condemn a movie. Of course if you just said "I don't want to see that movie" other people would understand that you simply don't want to see it.

Also I didn't say I disliked the Saw movies, I said they have run their course. I am kinda tired of "let's play a game" a million times over. Therefore I don't want to see any more Saw movies. At least anytime soon.

As for your plot comment I'll have you know that I have a book actually being considered to be published. I have a meeting in two weeks to hear their response.

While I don't particularly care for moviemaniak's firm belief in that box office makes movies, he is right in the fact that Saw V will never beat HSM3 in box office total. That's just you in denial, JR. Here's a helpful tip: just because the movie didn't beat HSM3 as far as money goes, you can still live with the fact that you like the movie better, regardless, and, while I hate to say it, the same would go for maniak if HSM3 actually made the #2 spot. Also, Maniak saying the third is the best in the series isn't him being a "dorky dumbass critic." It's him being one of the few fans of the franchise on this site.

"so if your so into it then why dont you joined the gang and take photos of your girlfriend naked and post it online and the news, so parents wont take there kids to go see a slut in a kids movie." That was in reference to Vannessa Hudgens's nude photos, am I right? The fact is, most celebrities do stupid things but the only reason u brought that up is cuz it's HSM. If the guy who's playing Jason in the next friday the 13th hypothetically posted nude photos of his girlfriend online, I think you'd still see the movie, right jr?...Right. And who doesn't want to see her naked?...oh, well besides maniak, who is openly gay, so that comment is double dumb based on the fact maniak wouldn't have a girlfriend to post nude photos of...

All of this doesn't take away from the fact that HSM3 pails in comparison to Saw as far as story goes(which is what REALLY makes a GOOD FILM, not box office). Sure, HSM3 is a musical made for the teenie boppers(i know, i know, i'm 15, but I try to separate myself from the crowd), so it's not gonna be based too much on story, but that just means it belongs on TV or direct-to-DVD, not in theaters so it can steal unnoticing kids' allowance

I'm in a reasoning mood today, anyone else notice?...

Wow. Your maturity is shown through your postings. I seriously wish all people like you should have to have a license to be able to do certain things, like post online. But still, you have proven nothing. You still know nothing about how the box office works.

SO JUST SHUT UP AND GO MASTURBATE TO HSM3 YOU FUCKTARD REJECT! and wow saw got a low rating.....like who didnt know that was gonna happen! most horror films get a low rating idiot! except old ones. and you know saw 4 made over 90 mill? so what make you think saw 5 isnt gonna make 80 mill? its not even a week dumbass. my theater had saw 5 on 3 screens! and its a big theater and you know what, saw 5 sold out on the first show!

Phatlightning, RottenTomatoes averages ALL the critics scores from across the country and such. Obviously, since it is the ONLY movie even worthy of the "Fresh" rating in the top ten, critics, as well as the movie going public, enjoyed the film. You know you are fighting an uphill battle here trying to bring the movie down from its pedestal, but it deserves the top spot more so than the 13% rating Saw V got. I am DONE with the Saw franchise. It has just gotten beyond ridiculous at this point. The only good one was the first one.

Wow Tenacious. You must really know zip about the box office. If you seriously think Saw V will make more money than HSM3, you sir are in for a shock. HSM3 has already made $82 million worldwide and there is NO WAY Saw V will match that EVER. Like have already posted, more than once, this movie is not only attracting children. Half of the audience is comprised of teens, who are likely old enough to see Saw V if they choose to. They just didnt. And here's the BEST part. You said Saw V is better than HSM3. Well click on over to RottenTomatoes my friend, out of all the top 10 movies, HSM3 is the ONLY fresh one. Ha.
