Tom Hiddleston Cast as Loki in Thor

Source:  Marvel Studios
Tom Hiddleston is Loki in ThorWhile Marvel Studios has just cast Chris Hemsworth as their hammer-wielding superhero, it seems they've found their villain as well.

Marvel Studios announced today that Tom Hiddleston has been cast to play the villain Loki in the studio's highly anticipated movie Thor. Kenneth Branagh will direct the film penned by Mark Protosevich and Ashley Miller & Zak Stentz.

The news comes on the heels that Hemsworth, who can be seen in a small role as Captain James T. Kirk's father in Star Trek, was cast as the title character. Kenneth Branagh is set to direct the film.

Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige will produce the film. The film will be released in the US on May 20, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Marvel Studios expands its film universe with a new type of superhero: Thor. This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

Thor reunites Hiddleston with Branagh, with whom he worked on the London production of Chekhov's Ivanov. The talented actor and Branagh also starred together in the BBC miniseries Wallander.

Hiddleston's credits also include Othello, in which he starred with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Ewan McGregor at the Donmar Warehouse, and he played Winston Churchill's son in HBO's The Gathering Storm.

Thor Marvel Studios is scheduled to release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including Iron Man 2 on May 7, 2010, The First Avenger: Captain America on July 22, 2011, and The Avengers on May 4, 2012.

If nothing else, I like this guy's look. He has that thin, wirey devilish look that Loki has. And that's a thing I love about Marvel's casting... whenever they cast an actor, they ALWAYS look exactly like the original comic's character. I wanna find the guy who does the casting for marvel movies and shake his hand for that... except for that one chick that played The Invisible Woman in Fantastic Four. She had the look, but she did not have the skill. LOLZ

They should stick with the Ultimate line type of chracters while making these movies. Iron Man wasn't much of an Ultimate approach but it was awesome, Hulk was pretty faithful to the classic TV series. But then again, people will not swallow classic looks on characters like Captain America and Thor, they need to crank up their gear when they appear on screen. Ergo, they wouldn't look stupid.

there has not been a Hemsworth cast comfirmation but i think that just might be in the bag, i figure they would wrap up the casting b4 Iron Man 2 finishes cause i have a feeling Thor just might be making a cameo in it or at least maybe Loki all i know is that it will tie into Thor and have some mention of The Hulk and or Captain America (Matthew Fox!!!!) lol thats my boy! i know alot of you dont like him for Cap but i think he would kill it, anyway this movie will be bad ass (Thor) and Iron Man....Bring on The Avengers!!!!

Don't know much about this man, but he looks enough like what I'd picture Loki to be like. I'm game for the movie. Bring on the casting news for Thor!!!!! That's what I want to hear!!!!! LOLZ!!!!!

Neat. I think this will be a pretty decent cast. Under the direction of Branagh, I feel pretty confident in what's going down.

he definitely looks the part. i looked up his filmography and i haven't seen anything he's been in, so i have no idea if he can act at all. but i have faith in Marvel they have done a great job so far. Now i just want to know who will play Cap.

Im happy with the choices. Chris Hemsworth will play a good Thor. I don't know too much about the guy playing Loki. But its going to be interesting to see how this Tom Hiddleston will play him. I think Marvel made a good choice going with someone less known than there other choice Josh Hartnet as Loki. I didn't think Hartnet was the right person to play Loki. Im really looking forward to seeing this.
