Buffy the Vampire Slayer Gets a Remake

Source:  The Hollywood Reporter
Buffy the Vampire SlayerBuffy the Vampire Slayer may be heading to the bigscreen, in what is being labeled a remake or relaunch, rather than a sequel or prequel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Buffy" creator Joss Whedon is not involved and the project is not set up at a studio, but Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment are in talks with original movie director Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui to bring this remake to theaters.

While Whedon is the person most associated with "Buffy," Kuzui and her Kuzui Enterprises have held onto the rights since the beginning, when she discovered the "Buffy" script from then-unknown Whedon. She developed the script while her husband put together the financing to make the 1992 movie, which was released by Fox.

Kuzui later teamed with Gail Berman, then president of Sandollar Television, bringing back Whedon to make the TV series, which was produced by Fox TV and launched on the WB in 1997. Kuzui and Sandollar received executive producer credits on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spinoff, Angel.

The new "Buffy" film, however, would have no connection to the TV series, nor would it use popular supporting characters like Angel, Willow, Xander or Spike. Vertigo and Kuzui are looking to restart the story line without trampling on the beloved existing universe created by Whedon, putting the parties in a similar situation faced by Paramount, J.J. Abrams and his crew when relaunching Star Trek.

One of the underlying ideas of "Buffy" allows Vertigo and Kuzui to do just that: that each generation has its own vampire slayer to protect it. The goal would be to make a darker, event-sized movie that would, of course, have franchise potential.

No production date has been set.

Yes it makes sense to try something like this, especially when Sarah and Allison are busy with their kids this year, but should they do it? no. The movie failed, then the tv show ruled before being canceled whih was unbelievable, now this? it probably would turn out ok, but taking away the cast and story of the tv show so we can hop in a time machine to buffy's old school is soul-destoying. wait for a year, go into negotiations with fox to bring back a one time finsh joint buffy/ angel movie! and the cool thing is you can bring in this new modern dark concept, and keep the original styles of these two great shows to make an amazing two and a half hour movie. Bring em all back and we will worship you, go ahead and start fucking with legacy, on top of a recent dragonball disaster, and you have alot of depressed fans. Grow up Fox... peace

People It will not be like the old buffy movie back in 1990's, the tv show was ok but the old movie was great.

You can't do B:TVS without Joss Whedon.
It's a productional impossibility.

Just go buy the "Buffy: Season Eight" TPBs written by Whedon and support the series that way. That's what I'm doing. They're good stories, too.

...no Angel.
No Willow.
No Spike.
No Xander.

They should just call it "White-Girl Blade", those cocksuckers.

How fucking dare they.

Furthermore, why leave Joss Whedon out of the mix?

Why?

Of course they'll remake it.
The question is; will I see it...
Probably not...

so it was made into a movie originally. Then it was made into a mildly successful tv show. Now they want to start the story over again into another movie... why?

The fact that their abandoning main characters, such as Angel and Spike, pisses me off beyond belief. Can everyone say butcherers?

As much I love the idea of a Buffy movie, I have to admit I'm a litle scared of what they are trying to do here. I mean a buffy movie without Whedon, It'll just feel like a fan-made movie, and that's no good.

Never cared for the original either but liked its spin-off Angel.

I wonder if Gellar will be Buffy? If not, I would like to see some sort of prequel, like a Medieval period setting.
