Josh Schwartz to Write X-Men: First Class

Source:  Variety
Twentieth Century Fox has set Gossip Girl creator Josh Schwartz to write X-Men: First Class. He had the option to direct the superhero feature as well, but opted out.

According to Variety, Schwartz (The O.C. and NBC's Chuck) is expected to inject a next-gen sensibility into the superhero series, which has earned $1.2 billion worldwide.

Fox is keeping quiet on plans and declined to confirm details of the project.

Fox has been leaning toward using the younger characters introduced in the previous pics in future installments -- teenagers with powers taught at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning.

Resulting film would likely draw from elements of the Marvel comic of the same name, launched in 2006, and enlist such characters as Iceman, Rogue, Angel, Colossus, Jubilee and Shadowcat, who have appeared prominently or made cameos in prior pics.

Given Hollywood's penchant for reboots with new actors playing familiar roles, the film could also reintroduce characters. The comicbook revolves around the Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Iceman, Angel and Professor X.

No production date has been set.

I will have to wait until everything is more definite and we receive more information before I decide how I feel about it.

I would honestly like to see MARVEL do in-house animated features, and take more time than they have on previous ones (which have been hit or miss, and almost always look like crap). The DVD market would be great for a three-part, animated, X-Men Epic.

I look at Wolverine and the X-Men as a reattempt at what Evolution (great show) was doing, opening the venue to more characters while not seeming overloaded.

maybe THAT explains why "batman forever" and "batman & robin" sucked to the bruce timm series.

but the animated series was not a tie-in to the movies,it was more like a couter-part alternate to the movies. it told details about the characters that did not made it into the trilogy and vice-versa,just like the new "spectacular spiderman" was for 3,for example, the movie tells the story of venom like it happened while the animated series explains the true origin of sandman. i can now only hope the new "wolverine and the x-men" series can FINALLY tell the full story on ALL x-men characters. here's hopin'!!!

wow!! comrade,as much as i hate to admit it... you have a point. i DOES look like an expensive risk. i said i hate it because i'm disappointed that it is how it works in hollywood.

Ok, I guess it says that above as well so there you go. And I do hope they switch writers. Getting the guy who wrote chick TV shows to make an X-Men!!?! You're kidding....right?!!!??

Well that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard, FOY. No offense, I mean, I enjoy the X-Men films myself as well, but too much = overkill. And I do not want to see that happen after XIII's mistakes.

Knobie, I think you are more right-on than you know. X-Men: First Class WILL be X4, revolving around the X-kids from the first 3 films, including: Rogue, Iceman, Colossus, Angel, Jubilee, etc. At least, that is what I have been hearing. Not sure if it's legit like from the studios or any of the writers potentially attached.

Yes. It was a coincidence. If they intended it to be a tie-in, they would have said so.

Look, I understand that you can recount all the story behind these characters, but look at it from the viewpoint of the casual audience member. They wouldn't know what the fuck was going on. FOX doesn't take risks, they love money too much ( Watchmen Lawsuit, point and case)

You have to introduce Sentinels, you have to give them meaning, that's half a movie right there then you have to open up the story (possibly to time travel) to explain Bishop and Cable, another half-movie.

The closest you'll get is an animated feature. Feature films just work differently than you are thinking man.

God knows I would love to see an X-Man (Nate Grey) movie (hell, I'd like to see his series collected in TPB), but you just can't market it. And that's what it comes to.

I heard that too, the title is the same one as a series about the original five, but that would be in the vein of a reboot, and fox is too stupid to be able to pull that off.

brought phoenix down to earth,if you want to see cain marko as xavier's step-brother just watch the "x-men:evolution" animated series that aired at the same time as the x-men movies(coincidense?). though you're right about the cyclops getting killed part, only that detail sucked!!! about a "bishop" spin-off i just though that sinse he's part of the x-men roster,a "days of future past" script without him time-traveling would be like just bishop's team V.S. the rouge sentinels and master mold. but please don't you tell me you are not intrested in a cable spin-off,based 4,000 years ahead into the days of askani-son,cable V.S. apocalipse, with no time-traveling either, and the part where i said "james marsden would be good for the roll" would be making up for cyclops' dead in 3. the first trilogy showcased the "life and times of scott summers" and eventually his next generation would re-apear as a genetical experiment where madeline pryor volunteered to host the fetus(as flashback prologue only)that will grow up to be the askani-son cable.

there making like 10 x-mens at the same time CBF. i think they are making this one, magneto, and wolverine and some other one too. ANd the BEST part is that all of them are realeased between 09 and 2010.

holy fuck no don't do this, this will shit the whole thing. I mean it's not like I really give a damn about the whole series, It was entertaining but still, not a masterpiece, actually not even close to a masterpiece.
anyways,I like the name: First class. nice name.

Oh my god, you didn't even read what I said. While those concepts and characters are great in comics, they wouldn't translate well onto the screen without tons of story preparation.
And yes, X3 soured the whole experience for me, partly because because Beast looked shitty, the movie itself was terrible, and they killed off some great characters (among other things).
Now, obviously it's not that hard to bring the dead characters back (though I seriously doubt a fan-based petition would do anything, It didn't prevent them from hiring Bret Ratner) but if you just start resurrecting characters it makes the movie less believeable, and the main thing I liked about Singer's films is that they felt like the real world, and treated the events and characters as though they actually existed.

If you want ALL these movies to be made, you're basically asking for them to suck. Fans wanted to see "more mutants" in X3, and look at what we got.

Do you even read X-men? Do you know how long it took to fully flesh out Cable and Bishop? Apocalypse?

I really wished they would just reboot.

How much you wanna bet that Wolverine is either really awesome, or a complete, abysmal failure. This movie, with the writer from Gossip Girl, is absolutely guaranteed to suck.

Honestly, it sounds like you just want to see what these characters would look like on screen. in that case, all you're asking for is a fucking special-effects and make-up barrage, and you got it in X3.

And chances are, with the way they altered characters in X3, neither Cable and Bishop would be anything like the characters you (supposedly) know.

are you cry-babying about one... ONE x-men movie that didn't work(for you,at least)? and they(the people at fox)'re still missing the accolites,mr.sinister, and the hellfire club!!! a part 4,and a bishop and cable spin-off can bring more scope to the x-men universe and characters that still need to be introduced, and they can even(with proper fan-based petition and persuasion)bring back cyclops and jean. so they end up with 9 x-men movies, but so what!!! just because they fucked up 3 doesn't mean they WILL fuck up the rest.

That grouping is all you really need for a first film. I don't know how the fuck Storm got in the mix before Beast or Iceman. Especiall Halle Barry as Storm. She made one of the strongest female characters in comics and weakened the shit out of her. I know there was that crap about her not getting enough lines and bitching for more so they just put whatever nonsensical crap would narrowly fit into the script into her mouth, but there are no small roles, only small actors, and she's one.

Wolverine is not always a good character. In fact, most of the time he's just a dick. The best wolverine is Frank Miller's "disgraced samurai" style wolverine.

Scott is good because he's a leader, and he HAS to be the good guy.
Hank McCoy is the scientist. Plus, super-powered Parkhour would be fucking sick.
Angel is the rich kid who is more than he seems.
Bobby is the youngest, he has to prove himself.
Jean is the love interest,
And Wolverine adds the drama to the Scott-Jean thing.
Throw in one nigh-omnipotent and wizened leader and your story practically writes itself.

Apparently Chad_Vital hates female characters...

No one cares about these characters lol. Wolverine, Gambit, Colossus, Iceman, Cable, were the only cool x-men. Angel's kinda cool but not enough to hold his own movie like Wolverine.

mmm... maybe combine two writers who can do good, serious fare, and a director who can make the script feel well-weighted and well-paced. Like, David Hayter and Bryan Singer.
Wait...
