Summer 2009 has beat every summer movie going season before it to become the highest grossing summer at the domestic box office ever. According to
Variety, the box office revenue throughout Sunday has been calculated at $4.17 billion. That is compared to the summer of 2007, which was the previous record holder with $4.16 billion. The Labor Day weekend should add another $100 million to that estimate, which finds summer 2009 up three percent in total grosses.
The three films that helped lead this amazing new record were
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen ($399.4 million),
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($294.3 million), and Disney/Pixar's
Up ($289.6 million). The grosses were also helped by surprise hits such as
The Hangover, which brought in an unexpected $270.2 million, and
The Proposal, which pulled in a hefty $160.2 million.
Other films that helped the season flourish were
Star Trek, which took in an unprecedented $256.7 million, and
X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which still managed to make $179 million even after a much publicized leak on the Internet. Family films
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs ($193.3 million) and
Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian ($176.5 million) also gave summer 2009 the upper hand.

last summer was good but full of way too many duds
this summer felt like another 2007, so many good stuff
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was this year's Dead Man's Chest: no plot but entertaining and somehow made a sh*tload of money
2009 is one of the most un-entertaining and offensive years of all time, yet it broke any record.
Now I hope in "Knowing" ending becoming reality. There, I said it.
btw. i just hate to say this.. but HP cannot compare to TF2. HP6 was.. for me.. pure awesomeness.. but again its all about opinion isn't it.
i agree with newkill.. this summer was a compelete shitfest. very little part of this summer's massive hits were good.
i just wanna ask cell.. did you not enjoy inglorious basterds and D9 though.. like just asking..
The Hurt Locker (2008) directed by Kathryn Bigelow!! Loved it! A+!
I also enjoyed "A Perfect Getaway" (B+) & "Orphan" (B+) ... These three (3) films were far "Better" than "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" & "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" put together!!!!
But thanks, anyway. I have heard that the sequel is a big disappointment...and they're planning a third. It probably won't be any better.
I only saw 4 of those that are on the current list, five if you count G.I. Joe. Of those five, this is the order they go in by quality, not quantity:
1)Star Trek
2)The Hangover
3)G.I. Joe
4)TF2
5)Wolverine
Of course, D9 pwns all of those, but it's not on this list.
There were not a lot of great films that came out this sumemr that were worth jumping up and down, and getting excitied about!
"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" D- Did we really need a part 2!??
"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" D- This is a Potter film that will be quickly forgotten, even by Harry's most ardent fans.
"Up" B-
"The Hangover" C- More hype ... The funny parts were in the trailer...When the years have passed and the buzz has worn off, I honestly feel that people will look back at The Hangover and wonder what they laughed at in 2009.
"Star Trek" C- Did we really need a reboot!?! Silly and no fun to watch.! Again more hype than it was worth!!
"X-Men Origins: Wolverine" D- This kicked off the suymmer season ..and what a dud!! The action sequences are bad, the plot is bad... Hugh Jackman? He's fine.
"The Proposal" C+ ..Cute and funny ... and forgettable .. The main reason I saw this was for Betty White!
