The DAILY SPIN: Count on it!
February 11th, 2005
This is the last Daily Spin column of the week. Sad, I know. You see; the Daily Spin week only consists of five days. Why is that, you might ask? Well, because Friday and Saturday are for getting drunk, and we here at Movieweb couldn’t care less about what those studios are hollerin’ down in the holler when the weekend rolls around. The Daily Spin likes to have as much fun as the next guy. Guaranteed. We’ll pick up the slack come Sunday...Sadly, I wasn’t able to check out any more DVDs this week. Those thick piles on my floor just keep growing larger and larger by the minute. Will I ever get around to watching The Story of the Weeping Camel? Probably not. You’re going to have to write me and tell me if it’s any good. I sure hope so. That sh*t cost me a mighty large thirty bucks. It would be a shame to waist it.
I did get to view the first disc of the South Park season 5 box set. It’s pretty tight. This is one of their best year-runs to date, and it contains some luminous episodes. Trey and Matt really lost their minds this time out. Towlie is a classic, and Scott Tenorman Must Die is horrifying and, quit simply put, a bit disturbing. I can’t wait to check out the rest of these shows. I’d only seen a couple of them during their original cable run. The topical episodes are my favorites. These two guys really know how to hit a subject on the head. Sad, really, that I hated their Team America: World Police so much.
Now, onto the announcements...
| April 26th |
That’s exactly what kept me from seeing this one in the theaters. Yup, I had a screening pass. Instead of going, I sat in a bar all afternoon getting drunk. I think I had about ten Guinness’s. Mmm, they were delicious. Probably better than this thing could ever hope to be. I’ll still check it out on DVD. I hear Jim Carrey’s pretty good as Count Olaf. And damn is that little girl hot. Jude Law and Meryl Streep also star. It’s a movie about orphans based on a popular kid’s book, but you probably already knew that. Paramount is offering separate anamorphic widescreen and full screen transfers. No special features have been announced. But I hear their gonna be awesome. Doesn;t matter, I probably won't watch them.
| May 31st |
The Marlon Brando Collection
That fat f*ck. I think he used to eat children, and I’m glad he’s dead. Wait. That’s just wrong and mean. I take it back. The only two films I’ve ever seen him in are The Island of Dr. Moreau and Apocalypse Now. Can’t say that I cared for either movie too much. They were made awhile after the man was deemed a legend. Here, with this set, we get four of Brando’s classics stacked on two thick discs. Included are The Ugly American, A Countess From Hong Kong, The Night of the Following Day, and The Appaloosa. Each film will be presented in anamorphic widescreen, with English Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono tracks. The Night of the Following Day will include an audio commentary with Director Hubert Cornfield. The rest of the films, sadly, only contain theatrical trailers as their sole special feature. The set will run you roughly around twenty-seven dollars.
The Gary Cooper Collection
Also on May 31st, another Hollywood prodigy gets his just deserts in The Gary Cooper Collection. Again, a man whose resume I’ve yet to peruse. I’ve got absolutely nothing to say about him. He’s cool, I guess. Someone seems to think so. I’m not much for old Hollywood. It’s for the gays. Included in this set are the films Peter Ibbetson, The General Died at Dawn, Design for Living, The Lives of a Bengal Lancer and Beau Geste. Each film will be presented in 1.33:1 full frame, with English Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono tracks. If you like to read, English, French and Spanish subtitles will be made available. No special features have been announced. This set cost the same price as Brando’s does.
That’s pretty much it. Geesh, not a lot going on in the world of DVDs this morning, huh? Oh, well. Maybe we’ll have better luck next week. I guess I’ll be seeing you cats after the weekend. Don’t do too much blow. And remember, “If I aint givin’ it to ya, you shouldn’t be getting’ it!”
Sincerely, Movieweb...
