Arnold Schwarzenegger Speaks Out on Terminator Salvation

Source:  Los Angeles Times
Movie PictureWe're pretty sure we know the truth about those pesky Arnold Schwarzenegger rumors swirling around Terminator Salvation, and director McG all but confirmed this stirring speculation when we spoke with him at Comic Con. The film's producers have paid Schwarzenegger a staggering amount of money, even though he isn't physically appearing in the film. So why did he get all of that cash? Because, as our more than reliable source has informed us, McG will be CGIing the former actor/current California State Governor's likeness onto Austrian body builder Roland Kickinger's body.

What does Arnold have to say about this? Well, the Los Angeles Times caught up with the former body builder and original star of The Terminator franchise for an interview. Schwarzenegger stated, "I still don't know how it will play out with this one. They showed me some footage, but I don't have a feel for the movie. I didn't see enough. I wasn't sure who the Terminator was. I don't know if there is one or if he's the star or the hero. These are the things that determine the success and how strong the movie will be."

Arnie played coy with the fact that his image will actually be seen in the film. He instead went on about the feel and tone of the project, "I hope they do well, and I hope it is a huge hit. I do hope it creates a spectacle on the screen. That is what James Cameron created. With those big movies, there's a certain expectation and if you don't live up to it, if the movie is not a 10, then the business will be soft. If Terminator Salvation is pushing it forward, it will be breaking records all the time. If director McG has the T4 and the kind of shots that has the audience thinking, 'Now how did he do that?' -- then it is "The Terminator" and you can blow everyone away and every record at the box office."

About not physically appearing in the film, Schwarzenegger was quite relieved by the fact, "The same thing happened with bodybuilding. Seven times I won the Mr. Olympia title, a record, no one had done that. Then someone else won it eight times. Do I sit and say, 'Darn it, my record is gone' or 'Darn, I'm not up there on stage.' No, because I've moved into other phases of my life. I moved on from bodybuilding into entertainment. Then I moved on from entertainment into a political life. Now this is the most exciting experience of my life. When this movie comes out, I won't be sitting there saying, 'Why can't I do that?' I hope it makes a lot of money and is very successful."

Terminator Salvation opens May 22nd, 2009.

Oh yeah and from the T3 the lead role really leans more on John Conner then Arnie by the end of the film. How many times can Arnie die and come back. All they have to do is make the fighting scenes great and the Terminators look bad ass because I think that is what everyone wants from this series.

I really excited they have turned this into a whole new trilogy ecspecially with Christian Bale. He has signed on for three films. Arnie is the 80's and 90's Terminator and they waited to long to make T3. I think that maybe after that film it was time for a change. Sometimes film has to take a different direction. Plus if they do 3 films for this trilogy they might pick better actors for the 2nd and 3rd films. Hey if Christian Bale can play the best Batman then he can play John Conner and from what I hear he is really intense in this film at times. Arnie was a little Corny at times in the first three. Maybe its a time for a change with the actors. If its Rated R then I'm sure it will all be good. Just be excited that they are actually continuing the series for three more films.

oh you fucking bastard, how dare you!?

i cant really help you out there, im glad that arnold is not in it, but i what i CAN do is not attack you with any amount of sincerity.

Well, I would have left it at that, but I keep getting attacked because I also mentioned that I didn't like the fact that Arnold wasn't in it.

I KNOW that he isn't the ONLY Terminator, and I don't know why I can't get it through people heads, that in my opinion, Arnold was the only reason I watched the fucking movie. I could care less that Christian Bale's in the movie, and I don't know why it's such a big deal that I don't want to watch this movie. I don't need to be on the bandwagon for EVERYTHING you know.

They're not messing with a classic, vamp, they're expanding the terminator universe. Arny's model isn't the only terminator. I don't know why i can't get that through people's heads. They've touched upon the whole other story of the war between skynet and the human race in the first 3 movies, and now that we actually get to see it, ur complaining no more arny?? Who cares?! He's moved on, he's the governator now, get over it. Now we get to see robots killing humans in an all out war. It won't be another future robot movie due to the fact that it has john conner(christain bale as john conner might i add), and if u look at the pic they released with bale looking down on a terminator, they still have the terminator exoskeleton, which is what REALLY makes the terminator, NOT arnold. Not him by far. They can put any skin on a terminator, they just chose arnold's. The terminator universe was NEVER just about arny's bot, they've ALWAYS been building up to THIS story, THIS movie. So no, they're not ruining a classic, they're not even reinventing it, they're telling us the story the classics were leading up to...jeez

I LIKED TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES! I don't think this'll be half as good, and my next question, WHY THE HELL DO THEY HAVE TO MESS WITH CLASSICS?!

i agree with visionary its a new trilogy, new caracters new terminators, at first i was like no arnie.....forget this but i am now just understanding that the terminater is not arnie at all, even thought he was so iconic in the 80's.
If arnis was the be all and end all why do we all hate t3 so much.....story

I really don't care if it's a "new" type of trilogy. To me it'll just be another Robot movie, and I'm not going to go see it I don't think. I'll wait for DVD and rent it, then, and only THEN will I give my opinion.

Yeah your Right The visionary!
Its a whole new type of Terminator trilogy.
I have been waiting for this particular timeline for so long now... anyway I wonder how Kickinger feels about his face being gone and replaced by arnie, yeah he probably is alright with that cause they have already started filming.

It is going to be a very interesting movie.

I can't figure out why everyone is so bothered by Arnold not being in the film. Sure, he's an institution onto hifself as the Terminator, but really it's not that important. The Terminators can be built to look like anyone. If they all looked like Arnold, than what would be the point of putting a human skin on them? You'd be like "Hey, look at thet group of septuplets. Don't they look just like the triplets we just shot at a minute ago?" Hell, there should be a terminator that impersonates a 6 year old crying girl, so people approach unsuspectingly and... well you get the idea.

Its a different trilogy and it looks good, with or without Arnold. He is not needed to make this part of the story work. And it definately needs an R rating.

i think id rather listen to arnold talk then read his words.

maybe im missing the point of the debate you guys are having, but i was just thinking that if you watch the original terminator theres a couple scenes with terminators who arent played by arnold.
or maybe its just the one scene where the guy infiltrates the camp where reese was hiding.

at any rate im all kinds of ready to move away from the standard terminator storyline thats been done 3 times already, and looking forward to seeing the post-apocalyptic future.

THIS is what i'm talking about cloud: I didn't say it was a dif. franchise, i said it's a dif. trilogy not focusing on the same story. Arny isn't needed because it's focusing on much larger things. It's bigger. Oh, and it's not "terminator: salvation." If u look at any write up about the movie and even on the teaser trailer, it just says "terminator salvation." I know what i'm talking about, what r u talking about? Vamp, look at sam worthington: he's another terminator who ISN'T arnold. I bet when we come out of the theater we'll think he's great. There is SO much more story to the terminator FRANCHISE than just focusing on arny. Get over it, and that goes to everybody

This is cool, but risky. I think they should stick to the body builder, not Arny, that would be too weird right now.

WTF is The Visonary talking about...?
it isn't "Terminator Salvation" it is "Terminator: Salvation" just like "Terminator: Judgement Day" and "Terminator: Rise of the Machines" it is the same fucking franchise, the same peoplea re backing the productions. The only thing is there is no Arnold, which really isn't that big of a deal. Would it make that much sense to have him in it...really? No, because we don't want to see him running around with John for a 4th time! This is about that war, not him protecting John to "prevent" the war.
This film is going to be great, and whoever thinks it is stupid to make it, think of this...
...are you telling me you don't want to see the war and the END of Skynet. This is what the other three were leading up to

that last paragraph is waste of cyberspace - if they ask you about the role, speak about that, not your past acheivements and your "life phases" - no one cares

althhough i'm looking forward to this new Terminator film, i honestly think that they should have left it at number 3 or even 2 - quit while you're ahead and leave it some dignity - the new one can't live up to the thrills of the original

I hope to God this is Rated R, & not some PG-13 BS, then months later a Unrated Directors cut comes to DVD!!

Despite the California governor's seemingly less-than-thrilled reaction, I remain excited about the fourth Terminator movie.

I think this one will be a huge hit with or without Arnold, anyways, they got Christian Bale and Bryce Dallas Howard for christ sakes, even Helena Bonham-Carter may have a cameo role in this as a machine, this will be huge

i dont think it will suck, and i know its a new trilogy. i get that. but arny was such a staple to this original trilogy. its like if mcdonalds replaced the bigmac. its not the same. doesnt mean it will be bad.

also, i just watch T3 again the other night, can we all give our favorite terminator lines here:

i think mine would be towards the end of T3 when he says:

"i am a machine"

anyone?
