Fox Chairman Tom Rothman Speaks Out on the Wolverine Bootleg

Source:  Entertainment Weekly
Much has been made about the unfinished version of 20th Century Fox's upcoming film X-Men Origins: Wolverine that was leaked onto the Internet this week, and the studio head is now speaking out on the matter. Entertainment Weekly spoke with 20th Century Fox chairman Tom Rothman who had plenty to say about the leaked film.

"The version that went out is unfinished. It's about 10 minutes shorter, doesn't have key scenes, it wasn't edited, and none of the effects shots were in any remotely final form," Rothman said. "It's a complete misrepresentation of the film and is deeply unfair to the people who have worked on it for years."

Rothman also said that he feels confident that they'll be able to determine the perpetrators of this leak very soon. Reports surfaces that Australian special effects house Rising Sun was a suspect, due to a watermark that appeared in some scenes, but they have denied the leak, saying they were never in possession of a complete print of the film. Whoever the perpetrator may be, Rothman also said this leak will certainly change the way the studio deals with post-production houses.

"We, like everybody, thought our system was secure," Rothman says. "Just like I'm sure there are lots of banks that get robbed that thought their vault was safe. We thought the post-production pipeline was secure at every juncture. But, obviously, it's self-evident that it wasn't. I have a high level of confidence we'll find out where the lapse in security was and we'll bring the perpetrators to justice."

Ok according to this i read up on, there were fought to be brothers or half-brothers.
But Joesph Loeb whom wrote for Wolverine Origins stated that they aren't brothers but from the sam species and that they are creating a story arc intended to kill Sabertooth with a sword that stops sabretooth's healing factors...

yea J.A i double checked and i cant find any VALID source telling me about the brotherhood of Wolverine and Sabretooth. Although there is some mention of Sabretooth being Wolverines Father. I Love the comics more than anything and if u know something i don't then i would be intrigued to see it.

Ok this film actually was accurate.

The only bad thing was Deadpool becoming Weapon XI, that was the only inaccuracy with the whole continuity between comic to film.

Gambit's background / origin was changed slightly, Deadpool's was never mentioned, but his character has been slaughtered, its kinda like the Venom procedure all over again.
Remember people Deadpool and Weapon XI are 2 comepltely different fucking people, think before you type.

I'm not sure if Wolverine was born the way he was, but he did get the adamantium placed in him alongside his bones.
And if you knew the X-men universe, you would know that even in the comic universe Sabretooth and Wolverine are actually brothers, come on guys do your research first, before you blast statements.

Also his claws were made inside him and if you looked carefully the battle they had where Wolverine was thrown infront of the train or truck before that Sabretooth broke off his claws, then he got the adamantium ones, when he found out what Sabretooth was doing and he did that out of revenge to take him down.

aye if you read the onld comics wolvernie did have healing powers but his claws wre bone...he got the metal ones when he got the adamantium transplanted to his bones ...sabertooth and wolverine wre not brothers thow...i cant remember if thats what they say in the movie but its not true

YO justice , i couldnt agree more . This movie made me lose what little faith i had in Marvel . The only thing is that in the comics Wolverine actually did have those "bone things" before he was dipped in adamantium jizz but this movie was just a dick slap in the face for all fans everwhere. The funny part is were talking all this shit and its not even out yet. There goes 4mill Down the drain. GOOD job FOX, first DB evoultion now X-men origins . DC wins again

okay watning my coment has a few spoilers

wtf was this piece of shit movie wolverines 0riginal power was healing not those retarded fucking bone things

and wtf why did they put all the hype in to dead pool and gambit and only have both of them in the movie for like 10 minutes each why
and wtf deadpool could never shot laser beams out of his eyes

and the explination of how he became dead pool was totaly gay

and wolverine and sabertooth were not brothers is so not true why

i am so glad i watched the leaked version at my friends house for free and not pay for this piece of shit

and yes i am aware that it was supposed to be about wolverienes origin

but they barely even gave us that

There is minutes worth of "special team mutants" that's clearly missing and 2-4 CGI pre-renders and like 2 visible wire stunts. For not being a finished movie, it still looks pretty damn good graphics wise. I'd say it's like 80% finished. All it needs is those 10 minutes and a few inserted CGI shots and small touchups.

If things are one of a kind, and there aren't financial threats to them, they can price it whatever they want because of that. Like JA Ottley said about MS Office, but better yet, let's say Photoshop CS4, it's about $600-800 bucks for this puppy. Lol you have to have a bad ass job to pay for shit with these price tags haha. Photoshop is a great program mind you, but not a sum worth of $600 bucks, maybe $200 tops. Same bullshit goes with that MS Office suite shit, it's what like $150-190 depending on where you buy it. Fucking ridiculous. The only program that people will use is WORD and all you do is type. $150 bucks to type a resume' lol?

Oh and an example of a company that raised their prices after their competition got flatlined was Blu Ray. HD-DVD died, and once it did, not even kidding you, they raised their dvd player prices probably a month or less after HD-DVD declared "game over" lol.

I'm saying that you will, err, whether its now or later. when the next franchise gets farmed out to a big studio, and you complain that they are ruining the character, thats when you will care. When Marvel can't afford to do it alone, and begrudgingly gives away the movie rights to a studio that doesn't care about continuity or character integrity. again I understand why you do it, I don't have the money to buy all the things they entice into wanting or convince me I need to see, but its your attitude of why you do it. Why say the fuck the studios who do bring you the kind of movies you want to watch? They're in it to make money, its a business, but its a business that keeps you entertained.

i actually agree slightly with both you guys, Chad & Kaya.

While Chad is making great pooints on piracy, its a fact would you go out and buy say MS Office 2009 for 120 pounds when you can download it free?
As long as downloading exists, this problem will always occur, why do think musicians now have a download chart, because people hardly buy singles or albums anymore, so their downloads are now tracked, so they can get a better rank in the charts.
The internet is the revolution and downloading is the new thing.

Also to note the average blockbuster studio film varies from $100 - 180.
Kaya i think your averaging it to that of a James Cameron picture.

Chad is fueling his point that the studios are greedy money grabbers, henc his statement on DVDs being probably $40 bucks. Yes some studios are greedy prime example is 20th Century Fox.
Do you honestly believe that these studios make film for the passion and creativity of film art anymore?
Its all about what brings in the benjamins...

Also your point, Kaya on independent films have always been that way since film has starting revolutionising and evolving itself.
Big names have fans, and fans have money which means profit.
While no namers don't that why the no names need their big breaks, but they have to start from scratch and work their way up.
You also need to know the right people

My point. Most the people on this site are casual movie fans who only watch the studio pics, yet you steal them. A big studio pic costs on average $200 million. That's why the DVD costs $20. Your argument that DVD's would be double the cost without piraters is a weak one, I'm sorry. It's the opposite. Without piraters DVD's would be $10. If people all of a sudden started stealing shirts then the shirt manufacturers would drive up shirt prices cause they are losing revenue.

And independent films? I'm saying me as a filmmaker will never get work because studios will only invest in films they know will make money and someone would rather pay for a movie with big name stars rather than a no name movie. Also, I've been a projectionists for 4 years and strive on the fact that I haven't scratched a print ;).

Kaya, no one is downloading independent film festival type of movies I promise you lol. They are usually blockbuster movies, which 98% of the time come out a month AFTER the release of the theater release date so all the people who downloaded whatever the movie is at the time have already seen it in the theater, and for certain movies, maybe even 2-4 times in the theater. I have only seen a couple of films come out before the release date and shortly after, they were 300 right around the time the movie came out, this movie before it came out, and I Am Legend the day of the release, and we are talking about decent looking copies not shitty camera rips (why people think that's even remotely okay looking is beyond me). Software will always be pirated man, it's just the way it is. Even with security updates and so forth it's not gonna stop. There are actually a lot of piraters that feel that things should be free shared amoung the fans so forth. That will never happen either lol. So you'd think the piraters and studios could meet at a middle ground somewhere? Nope. Studios are too greedy and some hardcore pirating uploaders are like "fuck you I'm gonna get this shit for free" type of greed lol. Why the studios don't reduce prices of certain things like dvds, if dvds were $2 bucks brand spankin new they would eventually profit from it from mass sales. Why would you pay $20 bucks for a movie you most likely saw for $8 bucks at the theater, and will most likely be scratched so you can't fucking watch it anymore WHEN YOU CAN download it for FREE, and burn it again if it does get scratched lol? You do the math here. But there still is a huge percentage of people (for example older people) who buy the damn $20 disc like it's no big deal. I can understand videogames being $60 since they take forever to make, but $20 for 2 hours or less? I could understand $10 even. It's not a bad number and sales would improve if it was cheaper. Btw, if there were NO piraters, they would sell shit at $40 a dvd and $15 for a movie ticket since they'd have no competition with piracy. $20 bucks has been around since DVD was a common and in every home. And it's still around the same price for the new dvd releases today, so how did they jack up the dvd prices if it's still $20? That doesn't make sense lol.

And what independent movies are you freaking out about? I literally have never had a convo with somebody in person discussing ANY independent movie nor anyone discussing one they downloaded, hell, if you want to find pirated independent shit go look, I'm sure ther isn't much of a selection since well for one, it's independent and usually tends to look like ass anyway (sorry). Haha even the piraters have standards (ouch).

"Kaya savas, the industry is killing US. They don't give a shit about fans unless it hurts their bottom line. With the flop that was Watchmen, and this debacle, I think we might be seeing the decline of the comic book film within the next ten years."

People who pirate and watch bootlegs are the reasons behind high movie prices, constant double dipping on DVD, and it also kills the independent film community. $6 Billion a year is lost to piracy, $6 BILLION! They have to account for that with all the re-issues and high ticket prices. I myself am an independent filmmaker and who the hell is gonna pay me to make some low profile film if people aren't even paying for the high profile films. In today's digital age piracy is killing the independent film community and is hurting the general movie going public.

People like PypeBomb who posted after me I guess have some mentality of "fuck the studios, it's all corporations and business". Well, yeah, film is an industry. It's a business just like everything, and yeah they don't care about the fans. They go where the money is. It's also not a necessity; it's a luxury. If you can't afford it that doesn't make it legitimate to steal it. If the studios get hurt then so will the consumers and so will the exhibitors. It hurts every tier of the industry. As long as people like PypeBomb exist the industry will continue to be high priced for average movie goers and make the lives of people who work in the industry equally frustrating. Also, don't worry about comic book films; they aren't going anywhere. The only thing that will disappear will be independent filmmaking.

You care because you want to see the next film , thats why. Marvels already heading for trouble with their plans for a cohesive movie universe. Sure Wolverine is a Fox film, but its still under the Marvel banner. I'm honestly not against pirating, I think people who pirate movies and music probably already spend a fair amount of money on the ones they do purchase. If you want to pirate a half finished film, fine thats your choice, but don't criticize it half done , and broadcast it to the world so it hurts the film when it finally does come out. It's ten fucking dollars, let people spend it and make up their mind for themselves. If they think it sucks then they can choose to not see the next one. But to tout your opinion around to the easily swayed, well thats just ignorant. YOu say fuck the film makers, but they are the ones putting up the collateral to make something that usually only breaks even. At least give the movie the chance to come out before you turn it into a train wreck.

i like the idea that watching a bootleg movie is tantamount to spitting in the face of movie makers, because i get xmas cards from hollywood every winter and birthday cards every summer.

oh no wait, no i dont.
fuck the film makers.

i'm not going to watch it online because i dont like bootlegs and i hate watching shit on the computer, but im not about to kick up some horse shit about boo-hoo for the millionaires who made the movie, because fuck 'em. that's why.

what the fuck do i care if fox loses a couple million dollars, either way im still eating spaghetti-o's for dinner.

the decline of the comic book movie is already starting. Marvel itself is beginning to show signs; the trouble with samuel l. jackson's long term contract playing nick fury, the way they low balled mickey rourke for iron man 2. Without the backing of a major studio like DC has with warner bros., Marvel can't really stand against the poor performance of any movie, especially a $300 million budget blockbuster. The Hulk did surprisingly well in theaters and still lost money. And with dvd sales steadily declining, they're not making as much money in the back end.
