It seems that the latest Hogwarts adventure is off to a record-breaking start. According to
Variety,
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince took in an estimated $22.2 million from midnight screenings.
The mark would be more than enough to break
The Dark Knight's $18 million midnight screening record set last summer as well as
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith's $17 million midnight tally.
While the Potter films have always been box-office juggernauts, analysts believe that Potter is more popular than ever lately, which some attribute to J.K. Rowling's last book in the series coming out, and some attribute to the two-year gap between films. The last film,
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which also opened on a mid-July Wednesday, took in $12 million from midnight shows en route to a $139.7 million five-day gross.
It seems that more record-breaking numbers could be in store for
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, so be sure to check back for the latest updates.

@Comrade, I am not bitching... okay maybe I am a little. And I am not saying gross matters all that much. But it does have a slight say. When there are far more HP fans that LOTR... agh, don't get me started. It was a good flick, and I honestly wait for the half blood prince, but to be honest this film did spare the franchise for me. From what I heard from hard core fans that are my friends, I didn't miss anything in Order of Pheonix and they hated Goblet of Fire when I actually enjoyed that one. Either way, at the end of the day, I agree to disagree.
And Chad, Well spoken my man. ;)
I still want to see "The Hurt Locker" this weekend if it is not sold-out!!!
Yes , for me it was too "mushy" , I agree with you about that HP6 is a crucial characgter bulding segment, but dude , after the final fight that they showed us in HP5 I was expecting something bigger and better , the book was more exciting. For me to much was missing in this movie, let's hope HP7 part 1 don't cut the acction of the book like this did.
Technically, the final tally of the current film has yet to be deduced. Include the current film's total gross with the final two installment and you have your three. I think that's what GnR is getting at.

Nice avatar, but how was HP 6 boring? I'm actually glad the action was toned down in this one. HP 6 is a crucial character building segment of the entire franchise. Preluding to Hermine and Ron, Harry and Ginny's relationships is far more important than a fight scene gone missing. I guess the movie was too "mushy" for you?
Btw GnR what are you talking about? It has two more, Deathly Hallows is going to be 2 movies, and that's it, the franchise is over. Where did you get the 3rd film from? Typo?
All 5 movies of the potter franchise grossed about $4.5 billion worlwide, and all three LOTR movies grossed about $2.9 billion worldwide.....so u can easily see which franchise made more money.....and potter has three more movies to go, and with the start of Half-blood prince, u can easily understand how much more the potter franchise will make.
I actually have respect for Harry Potter for what it is, it's pretty interesting, even if it was aimed at the teenage audience. But they keep getting darker, more adult, which I like and is probably the biggest reason I went to this showing. I haven't gone to any other Harry Potter films at midnight because I never really cared that much for HP. There's a huge difference between these films and Twilight.
Btw, no more about Iron Man we all know it was good so there's no need to defend it after this against maybe what 2 people who didn't like it lol?
I agree with Fallen about the whole LoTRs thing, far better storyline than HP and it really pulls you in when you watch it. I'm assuming HP has the same effect on some people because it's not like it has a bad story. It has a lot of interesting mysterious characters for example Snape (who's my favorite). Not to mention Harry Potter has a very strong fanbase which is awesome for HP, not many movies can do this many sequels and get away with it (even though they are based on each book). I can't knock it because it's famous for a reason. I would rather much hear people talk about HP than Twilight any day lol.
Also think about other book adaptations that flopped like The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons. There was this huge fuss about those when they were released and then people saw it they were disappointed. I thought the secret itself from "Code" was silly. I was like 'this is the big catholic secret they are going with?' Whoop-dee-doo lol. So you see, HP stands above a lot of franchises because of it's fans, and I'm assuming there is more of those than LoTR fans (even though those films are made into the best trilogy ever). Think about all those people who haven't watched HP yet because last night was sold out like crazy? This movie is gonna make money money money... mon-ey lol
but to put both series together, for me, HP wins.
Mercury+Sodium oxide+Flavourants=McDonalds.
I take it you never ate at an In and Out before, peaches?
Don't worry. I'm not THAT bad of a McD's hater. Their bathrooms are useful :P
I'm just itching for The Hobbit.
The reason I compare them so addimatly (don't know if I spelled that right) is because they both are English based, blockbuster movies, under the adventure fantasy title. And I'm just proving that it is not the best thin to hit the screen, given it is fun.
No offense intended to anyone, but that's exactly the way I feel about eating McDonalds food PERIOD, no matter what age you are.
Who hasn't seen Super Size Me yet? Seriously.
"Okay. Well, you should sue McDonald's, 'cause they ****** you up." -Will Smith
The only good line in that entire Hancock flop. LOL. :P
I think the WorldWide does have it beat, collectively, if ot, the Deathly Hallows 2 parters will.
I'm with the latter, and will hopefully pop in sometime this weekend.
Not sure onj Potters worldwide record but I think LOTR has it.
Also, this made a billion in 5 movies. LOTR made over 2 billion in 3 movies. That says something about audiences. :)
