Is Matthew McConaughey Going to Be Captain America?

Source:  Cinema Blend
Movie PictureMarvel Studios just announced that they were bringing The First Avenger: Captain America into theatres May 6, 2011, and while that day is far off, it hasn't stopped speculation about who would play the star-spangled Avenger. According to Cinema Blend, Matthew McConaughey may be one of the names at the top of the list - perhaps placed there by the fact that the actor's name has often been at the top of fan polls for their pick of who to play the character.

Physically, McConaughey fits the bill for the character perfectly. He's blonde-haired, blue-eyed, square-jawed and buff. What makes this a bit more uncertain is McConaughey's acting history and public persona. The actor is known for being laid-back and, well, "dirty" - hardly the embodiment of the American Dream that Cap is supposed to be.

On the other hand, Captain America has often been criticized for being too clean-cut and patriotic, and being out-of-touch and inaccessible to modern fans. So perhaps McConaughey would be able to breathe excitement into the role for The First Avenger: Captain America.

It should be noted that this is still rumor at this point - McConaughey's name is at the top of the list being considered, but nothing has been signed or confirmed at this point.

In the comics, Captain America is actually Steve Rogers, a patriotic young man during the days of World War II who was rejected by the army for being physically unfit. Officials were so impressed with the young man's enthusiasm that they enlisted him in a top-secret Super Soldier program to transform him into the pinnacle of human fitness. Transformed, Captain America fought in the War and was then put into suspended animation until the modern day. Re-awakened in a strange new world, Cap still fights for truth and justice and the American way as the leader of the Avengers.

and to Blade UK I say, fuck Pitt coz he is over-rated.
In all the movies in which he was the main actor, less than 6 of them were okay. And yu still see people rating him higher.
And I agree with Marcusx.Coz McConaughey doesn't fit the part.HE sucks, good thing it's still speculation.

i brought up dan craig earlier. saint has to attempt to steal my ideas. altho not necessarily dan craig, i said if he was younger by at least 15 years, it would work. and as far as the accent goes, thats easily fixable. matt m should stay away from this movie. you guys seen the article about his new movie surfer dude? exactly, the guy is terrible. its almost as if you guys want this movie to fail simply by saying you want him in it! its people like you that ruin film with your nonsense. im sorry but you guys bitch(me included, but i dont say dumb shit like wanting mcconaughey as Cap Am) about all these terrible super hero movies but is he really the best you guys can come up with? or are you joining the bandwagon just cuz hes the title on the article? either or, some of you just plain make me sick.

Okay, the guy is a great james bond, but daniel craig would make a shitty captain america. Craig has an accent, he's not american, and he's too old. I know people said he was too old to play bond but that worked out great, BUT cpatian america is not that old looking. Sure, he IS old in reality, but the ice kept him preserved so he doesn't look his age. U have to have somebody who has the body and squarish head of cap. I know that sounds wierd, but craig's head is too round and he doesn't have the right hair. He'd look like hell if they even tried to make him look half way decent. That's why i think Travis Schuldt would play a good cap, better than the crap people have been suggesting, and MM. R all u people foreign or something? U keep picking people who aren't even american to play fucking captain america!

if i was to pick a relatively unknmown actor with all the credentials (blonde, blue eyes, build, 30's) then i pick Simon Baker. and good actor with the potential to be as succesfull as Capt, as Tom Jane was with the Punisher!

Comrade, my comment on which actors (known/unknown) do the roles isn't about how good the movie was. for a start, Fan four was bad, but it wasn't aimed at our age group (20 years and counting) it was aimed for kids (Travis' age lol) and it made a shit load!! Chris Evans/Jonny Storm was great in it! easily the best aboput the movies!
Wesley Snipes/Blade... another great casting. yeah the third movie ran outta steam but it wasn't a complete loss.
and Big Ben/Daredevil.... wasn't that bad. after watcing the movie a few times since released a few years back, he has sorta grown on me! i'm not saying we need a big star for Capt (though Will Smith would nice and different) i don't understand why you think an unknown and untested actor is the solution.

And comrade, u mentioned matthew fox. That's funny, cuz i was just thinking bout him being a super hero the other day, but not Cap. I saw him with black hair(he's usually got it shaved or a buzz cut) and i immediately thought...wait for it...Hal Jordan. What do u think?

In response to Rad's well known actors argument,
Fantastic four movies blew. and sucked, at the same time, which is quite difficult.
Daredevil was a piece of latex-leather clad shit.
And Maguire's performances got weaker and weaker.
While Routh's performance was debatable, I think the presentation of the character benefits from a fresh face. After all, Steve Rogers is just some nobody skinny kid who wants to serve his country.
And Christian Bale wasn't that well known among American audiences prior to Batman. He did a lot of fringe and cult films. And he still does, he's a risk-taking, high gaining actor.
