BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail Conquers the Box Office with $41.1 Million

Source:  Box Office Mojo

Weekend Box Office

1) Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail $41.1 million
2) Taken $11.4 million
3) Coraline $11 million
4) He's Just Not That Into You $8.5 million
5) Slumdog Millionaire $8 million
6) Friday the 13th $7.8 million
7) Confessions of a Shopaholic $7 million
8) Paul Blart: Mall Cop $7 million
9) Fired Up $6 million
10) The International $4.4 million

Tyler Perry is back to his old tricks. In a move that has surprised no one, his latest theatrical dramedy Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail pulled in $41.1 million over the weekend, becoming the number one film at the box office. While the movie currently ranks as the twentieth highest grossing fat suit movie of all time, it is Perry's biggest opening weekend thus far, proving once and for all that the man owns February. With an opening weekend this high, you can look for even more films from Perry's signature brand sometime in the very near future.

This week's only other new release, Sony Screen Gem's Fired Up, didn't fair quite so well. The poorly marketed teen comedy about a couple of jocks who join their high school cheerleading team, took an immediate nosedive at the box office and wound up in ninth place with just $6 million. Expect it to be out of sight and mind by next week.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop continues to be the highest grossing film of the year. Coming in at number 8, it pulled in another $7 million for a cumulative take of $121 million. And Fox's underestimated hit Taken continues to chug along. It bounced back up the chart into the number two spot with another $11.4 million. Its total gross is now at $95.1 million, with its overseas grosses at $69.3 million. The combined grosses equal $164, which means this is also one of the highest grossing films of the year.

Next week, Madea will have to do battle with Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li, the Harrison Ford drama Crossing Over, and the behemoth Disney concert film Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience. Can an old sassy lady beat three young punks and a bunch of surely video game characters? I guess we'll find out next week, won't we?

ha it was so predictable that Jason was gonna be a one weekend hit and vampire the movie was disappointing the first 20 min were like the rest of the movie they just stretched it out more... but i loved how they made Jason character in this one and the main character was awesome... just the story with the teens was like every other one before..... party, drink, have sex, and die... its getting a little old

IF MOVIE WEB GOT THE INFO CORRECT:

After setting a new record for the highest single-day take for an R-rated horror film opening last weekend, and breaking the record for a three-day haul for a horror remake (previously held by "The Grudge" (2004), Platinum Dunes' FRIDAY THE 13TH has set another new record, alebit one they didn't wish to claim. Various sources confirm that the Marcus Nispel directed reboot fell 81% in it's second weekend, solidifying it's place as the biggest sophomore weekend drop for a horror film in tracked history; the sixth largest overall.

"Friday the 13th" Slipped to #6 ... LOL... I guess the hype wore off!!

I had a free movie pass left over from the holidays, nothing else opened this weekend...So I went to the Remake/Reboot of "Friday the 13th" ...I will give it a C- .. It had a very weak & lousy ending.....and to many plot holes.

I'm sad about "Friday the 13th." It was such an awesome movie. I'm also sorry to see such a worthless pile of crap like "Madea Goes to Jail" is taking over the number one spot. I just saw "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," and was very pleasantly surprised with it. It was a great movie.

Tyler Perry makes some funny stuff. I knew this was going to be number one. Jason deserves the spot it's in. It absolutely sucked. Jason is the worst Horror icon ever created. He should have never beaten Freddy.

You better hope liam neeson doesn't read your comment Vis and come to your house to deliver a world of hurt all over you and your unknowing family. Definately one man in Hollywood I would not cut off in traffic.

That's YOUR opinion Vis. I thought Taken was a very good movie. But I totally agree about Friday the 13th. From 42 million to 7 million? That's an 80% drop off! That's just unprecedented. I can't remember a movie doing THAT well in Week #1 and falling THIS BAD in Week #2. Just crazy.

That's good Killerman...

Anyways, what are people thinking? That's a huge drop for Friday. People went to see Slumdog because of the Oscar buzz which is understandable, but I can't believe Taken is #2...how long has it been out? It wasn't even that good

Wow, Taken is still going strong, over $95 million so far. I am surprised like Twisted is about Friday the 13th though.
