New The Karate Kid Remake Plot Details

Source:  Moviehole
If you're wondering how a new remake of an 80s classic will be handled, you can find out right here. Moviehole spoke with some people who are working on The Karate Kid remake, who spilled some details on the film's plot - as well as confirming that the title will remain The Karate Kid and not The Kung Fu Kid, even though the character learns kung fu in the film. Here's the site's plot description of the film.

Sherry is offered a transfer to China. Considering the U.S office is about to lay off everyone, it's really her only choice; especially since nobody else at the office has been offered a transfer. With her young son Dre (Jaden Smith) in tow, the single-mother makes Beijing her new home. Needless to say, not knowing Chinese, and experiencing a bit of culture shock, they both find it a little hard to settle in - - Dre especially.

Like Daniel Larusso in the original film, Dre (who, unlike Larusso, is a skateboarding video-game buff) immediately catches the attention of the local bullies - in particular, Lui Wei Cheng. And before too long, Dre is going home with bruises (he tries to hide a black-eye under a cap by pulling it as far down his face as he can) and whining about wanting to return to the states.

Dre's enrolled into a strict Beijing Middle School. His first day there is a bit of a shambles - the assistant principal spots his bruises, and assumes he's been fighting (which, of course, they don't accept under any circumstances), and he turns up in a school uniform, something he didn't have to wear that day (there's only certain days when a uniform is required).

The Mr Myiagi character is actually named Mr. Han (Jackie Chan). He's the maintenance man of the apartment lock that Sherry and Dre have moved into, and meets the new residents when he's called over to fix their hot water service. From the bathroom, Han spots Dre practicing martial-arts kicks (unsuccessfully) in front of a video-game, and catches his black eye. Later, of course, he'll agree to teach him - both martial-arts and the Chinese language (so he can impress his mother by haggling over apples).

The 'John Kreese' character - the character played by Martin Kove in the original film - is Li Quan Ha, the owner of the Fighting dragon school of Kung-Fu. One visit to the school - in which Li Quan terrorizes his students (who range from the age of 3 onwards), namely Lui Wei Cheng - and Dre is immediately put off.

Oh, and yes, there's a love interest - someone mother wants Dre to bring home for dinner.

the truth is there are a zillion original scripts that the studio exects get EVERYDAY from unknown writers.
But trying anything NEW is considered dangerous because they have to MARKET IT...so it's easier(and lazier) to simply go along with what was a hit from the previous summer...

It's so annoying!

i agree with remy... the drive in hollywood to remake classics is a joke. can't buy me love's remake "love don't cost a thing" (still think the title switch is hysterically lame) was a joke. these movies lose the John Hughes-esque teenage angst and struggle and replace it with cheese and juvenile humor that is too old for children and too silly for teens and adults. lame.

A skateboarding video-game buff being bullied? What the hell? It was bad enough when news leaked that the original film was being remade. Now, it has just entered the realm of the absurd.

Why?
The Kung Fu Kid; that's hilarious (go with that title...) ;)

The original Karate Kid is a classic that this shitty remake will never match. Will Smith's kid and Jacki Chan can't compete with the chemistry of Pat Morita (r.i.p.) and Ralph Macchio.

To be honest, I've never seen "The Karate Kid," so I can't be aghast at the fact that they're remaking it. However, my opinion, in general, is that if a movie is relatively old it should be remade. I'm not sure if this one should exactly be remade yet, but I might see it. "Predator," however, is something I consider to be a pointless remake. Despite the fact that I'll see it because I enjoy remakes. LMFAO!!!!!

It's sad to see what Jackie Chan has become. Thee greatest stuntman to ever live. The bringer of the greats like Super Cop and Drunken Master. Why does America fuck up a lot of these foreign guys? I hope that Tony Jaa guy never comes over here, because he'll get fucked up,too.

This will further the use of the stereo type of labeling every martial art "karate".

100% Bullshit that I will never fucking watch. The whole premise behind this is about as retarded as that fucking waterhead from The Wonder Years.

Could they be anymore original. Come up with some better ideas already. Stop remaking every damn movie that was made in the 80's.

Let me save the majority of you some time:

"oh god, not another unoriginal hollywood pile of shit what another remake? hollywood has no more ideas. this is so stupid."

I wouldn't mind seeing this, I'm not eagerly awaiting it but I wouldn't mind giving it a gander.

I like how they're changing up the story a bit, but I'm still not too into this. The only way I'll go see it is if Zabka cameos as a prick.
