The Twilight Saga: New Moon Breaks First Day Records!
November 21st, 2009
No one thought Batman could be defeated at the box office. Well, it's finally happened, as the second entry in the extremely hot Twilight franchise, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, not only broke the all-time box office record for midnight screenings, but also toppled the record number of first day box office receipts once held by The Dark Knight. Take that, fanboys!Twilight fans are certainly a devoted bunch. At midnight screenings in 3,514 theaters, the film earned a hefty $26.3 million. The previous record was held by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince which nabbed a measly $22.2 million when it opened at midnight last July. The big news comes with New Moon's first day grosses of $71 million playing at 4,024 theaters. That crushes The Dark Knight's first day take of $67.2 million by more than $4 million dollars. It's going to be a hard record to beat now!
Exactly one year ago, it took Twilight its entire first weekend to earn little more than $69 million, a take which New Moon surpassed in less than twenty-four hours. Could the film be poised to take down The Dark Knight's three-day box office record? We'll have to wait until Monday to find out for sure, but the film shows no signs of slowing down.

Why are people still bringing up TDK's record when it didn't beat it?
And telling me to jerk off? I won't say anything to that. Unless you were to talking to someone else, then this whole thing is mistaken.
I'm also angry that people seem to believe that women are "bitches" for liking a movie that is aimed at them.
oh and movieweb, u better watch wat u say before u say it...that lil fanboy remark wasnt nice, tsk tsk...maybe one day ull find us real cinema fans all gone and u can be stuck here with your twilight pals instead...lol
If this beats TDK money wise in the long run, we need to take a good look at ourselves in the mirror, and be like 'what the hell?' lol. Well, not many of you, but people who watch this movie 20 times for masterbation purposes haha.
I think Iron Man 2 will do really well, probably following in New Moon's box office footsteps. IM2 has a lot of hype.
Dark Knight proved to be a pinnacle of film making. It deserved every penny. It's hard to imagine that its records are being shattered so soon, and by THIS!
However, I'm happy to report that New Moon is officially 18 million short of The Dark Knight's first weekend record. Thank golly! :P
Makes me nervous for next summer, when Eclipse comes out. The Last Airbender will be released on the same weekend, which is sure to be a much better film than any Twilight film could ever hope to be, so Airbender may get the shaft at the box office. We'll see. Guys, take your girlfriends to the third Twilight, but buy yourself an Airbender ticket!
I mean, seriously. What would you rather watch?
Sappy Vampires or Magic Kung Fu?
I think the choice is obvious :P
Here's a more simpler way of stating how bad this movie was:
George Lucas could of wrote a better romantic of this show.
You know that was the dollar figure right? Anyway, I see what you mean. I got outvoted and saw it last night. 3/5 in regards to how funny it was for taking itself so seriously.
{see wikipedia's 'list of biggest opening weekends for the actual list. TDK ranks #13 globally for opening weekend with HP6 with $394,022,354.}
Kupo - I so agree dude. It's pretty disappointing to see quality films dwarf by blockbuster crap. Another movie thats due to come out that I'm sure no one will hear about is "That Evening Sun". Audiences these days have been so dulled down by explosions and eye candy, and garbage ass 3-D, that movies driven by stories have no place in mainstream American Cinema. Granted there is the slim minority that can enjoy both, no doubt, but you look at where the big numbers are heading its with CGI extravaganzas and such.
Still it has the possibility that New Moon might out do TDK money wise. I've read the books, the first stank, second was better and so on.
One day something else will out beat New Moon.
