High School Musical and the upcoming remake of
Hairspray are turning their star pupil Zak Efron into this generation's John Travolta. According to
Variety, the singing/dancing teen is gearing up to star in a musical rendition of the 80s hit
Footloose.
The film, about a town that bans dancing at their high school socials, has already been turned into a Broadway hit. Kenny Ortega, the man who directed Efron in the Disney Channel smash
High School Musical, will also be directing him here. Efron will step into the shoes of Ren McCormack, a character originated by Kevin "Six Degrees" Bacon.
The film will mostly likely start shooting next year, right before the looming strikes paint the town black.
Hairspray opens July 20th, 2007.
