BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: He's Just Not That Into You Gets Into $27.4 Million for First Place

Source:  Box Office Mojo

Weekend Box Office

1) He's Just Not That Into You $27.4 million
2) Taken $20.3 million
3) Coraline $16.3 million
4) The Pink Panther 2 $12 million
5) Paul Blart: Mall Cop $11 million
6) Push $10.2 million
7) Gran Torino $7.4 million
8) Slumdog Millionaire $7.4 million
9) The Uninvited $6.4 million
10) Hotel for Dogs $5.8 million

This weekend belonged to the rom-com. Warner Brother's latest star-fueled charmer He's Just Not That Into You took in an estimated $27.4 million over the last three days to become the top grossing film at the box office. Last weekend's number one film Taken, an action drama starring Liam Neeson, slid into the number two spot with another $20.3 million to its name. Thus far, this little film has earned a cumulative total of $53 million with hardly any promotional push.

Three other new films opened this weekend to varying results. The Henry Selick stop-motion adventure Coraline came in at number three with $16.3 million. Will this be enough to save Laika House, the animation production company responsible for the film? Only time will tell. In at number four was Steve Martin's franchise sequel The Pink Panther 2, which brought in $12 million. This was way down from the original's opening. In 2006 The Pink Panther brought in $20 million to become the number one film on its February opening weekend.

Push, a superhero film about psychics, didn't push too many people into theaters. The film, which opened on more screens than the 3D Coraline, dropped in at number six with only $10 million in ticket sales. Fanboys, hoping to earn big money on its limited amount of screens, only pulled in $164,000. That isn't nearly enough to give it that extra shove it needs, so most of you will have to wait for home video on this one.

Next weekend will belong to one man. And his name is Jason Voorhees. Friday the 13th will open against Clive Owen's dramatic thriller The International. Which one will you see?

I guess you're right. I just got the same message on my profile, and after seeing it another dozen times it just seemed annoying, is all. Besides, whenever I do this :P it means I'm not serious. Just goofing around.

I've been waiting for this trailer for a while too. I'm excited :)

I surprised Pink Panther wasn't number 1 or at least 2. Btw, Diagma, Pypebomb's just spreading the word. If he really wanted to build his comment count, then all he would do is post it in the same article a hundred-fifty times.

At least Coraline got more than the Pink Panther lol.

Thanks :). Although, don't you think it's a little presumptuous to say what people in general are inclined to think?

I'm sorry. I did say it was CGI, I clearly knew it was stop motion, but what my intended meaning was that most students and people in general do not know (or probably care) that it is stop motion. They see something like this and are inclined to think CGI. But I am with you. I wish it had done better.

Assumptions about others, Maniack, OTHERS, not the success of the film! Are you not reading my posts in full? LOL. Anyway, you still called it CG when it's CLEARLY not. "I am calling it like I see it", well, if you "see it" as CG, I guess that's okay. No skin off my back, but it makes me fear what those kids are learning from you :P

Oh and btw, check your account/approve friends. I think you have a list of people waiting on you :)

AW MAN, I THOUGHT FANBOYS WOULD AT LEAST BE NUMBER 8 OR AT LEAST SOMEWHERE ON THE LIST, PUSH COULD HAVE DONE BETTER, I SAW IT YESTERDAY AND IT WAZ ACTUALLY COOL, YOU GET TO HEAR DAKOTA FANNING SAY SHIT, CRAP, AND BITCH. IT JUST NEEDED A BETTER ENDING BUT I GUESS THEY WANTED TO MAKE A SEQUEL.

Even though it slipped to second place, Taken has done extremely well making over $53 million in two weeks. I agree with Killer, Friday the 13th should be number one next weekend.

I am not making assumptions. I am calling it like I see it. I asked every one of my six classes, each with about 25-30 students, who would bo going to see what. I do this every week, and it always holds up well. After watching the box office week to week for the past four years, I knew Coraline was not going to open huge. So after the classes all voted, I knew hands down "He;s Just Not That Into You" would be number one.

Perhaps you're right, Moviemaniack, but you forgot one important detail. Coraline is stop-motion animation, not CG. And for the record, I'm not a fan of Nightmare, let alone a "die-hard". I went to this not expecting much either, but I was VERY surprised by how good it was. Event the Tomato Meter is at 87% for this film. You really should ask before making assumptions about others, friend :P

slumdog was amazing and deserves all the attention its getting

I still can't believe people are still going out to see this crappy Slumdog. It shouldn't even be on the list. Looking at this list, I'd say Friday the 13th will easily be number one. I hope The international is good, as well.

taken was a very entertaining movie so im glad to see it only dropped %18 from its opening weekend when movies that usually take the top spot one week usually drop %40-%50 in the 2nd weekend... and diaigma reviews dont mean anything
  (Delete)
February 8th, 2009 10:28pm
Diaigma I knew Coraline was not going to open huge. I mean, yeah they promoted it as "from the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas," but when people like my parents would see the TV spots, they were like, "I would not see that movie if you payed me to." So I just think that it is the marketing. It is a CG film, so you are automatically inclined to think that it will be huge after the releases of Wall-E, Madagascar 2, Horton Hears a Who and Kung Fu Panda. But the reality is, it is a dark film that really only appeals to the "die hard" fans of "Nightmare." I hate to use the term "emo" or "goth" but those were the only students of mine that were even remotely interested in this film. So it is no wonder something like "He's Just Not That Into You" opens at #1. And what did you expect the weekend before Valentine's day? No matter. Next weekend Friday the 13th will take the top spot. I have been waiting for that for a long time. It better not disappoint.

I'm sorry to see "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" kicked of the list, and I'm also sorry ot see that "The Uninvited" did so bad. I just saw that today, and it was actually REALLY good.

Coraline deserves so much more than that. The reviews for the top two were terrible, and yet people would rather watch that. Boggles me. Just boggles.
