BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra Storms Theaters with $56.2 Million

Source:  Box Office Mojo
Weekend Box Office:

1) G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra $56.2 million
2) Julie & Julia $20.1 million
3) G-Force $9.8 million
4) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince $8.8 million
5) Funny People $7.8 million
6) The Ugly Truth $7 million
7) A Perfect Getaway $5.7 million
8) Aliens in the Attic $4 million
9) Orphan $3.7 million
10) (500) Days of Summer $3.7 million

Despite low expectations and lofty speculations about its thematic quality, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra stormed the box office this weekend, racking up an impressive $56.2 million for first place. Word of mouth has been strong, with critics and bloggers claiming it to be a fun summer blast that defies all action film conceits. Though a huge drop off is expected in its second week of release, this Hasbro franchise has shown itself to be a worthy advisory in an otherwise weary summer. We are definitely looking at the next big trilogy here, and it won't be hard for Stephen Sommers to top this one in a sequel.

Hungry people countrywide rushed out to see Julie & Julia, making it the second highest grossing film of the weekend. This love letter to Julia Child ( as played by Meryl Streep) pulled in a respectable $20 million, and won the hearts of audience members and critics alike. This week's only other major release didn't fare quite as well. Universal's thriller A Perfect Getaway dropped in at number seven, earning a weak $5.7 million. Not too impressive. We probably won't see this one on the charts come next week.

A couple of art house flicks hit the circuit this weekend, but neither were any match for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra as far as the per screen average was concerned. Cold Souls, Sophie Barthes' new comedy starring Paul Giamatti, earned $63,300 for the second highest per screen average (just behind G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra), taking in an estimated $9,043 from each of its seven screens. Paper Heart, Charlyne Yi's look at love and life, earned $206,000 playing at a respectable 38 theater locations throughout the country.

Next weekend sees the debut of this year's sci-fi action masterpiece District 9. Will it be able to hold its own against The Time Traveler's Wife and The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard? My guess is that we have another huge blockbuster on our hands with Neill Blomkamp's first feature film.

If you grew up with GI Joe, and expect a movie version of the Saturday Morning Cartoon, you won't be disappointed. I loved its audacity.

Oh wait, I'm responding to Cell, I guess I can use the standard response "Cell, you're a moron with terrible taste, shut the fuck up."

I'm with Chad on GI Joe.

I had a good time, and it's because I didn't take it seriously. Y'all should give serious consideration to not treating all films like the same way.

"District 9" is on my list for next weekend .... as far as "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" ...I will ait for Redbox $1.00 rental night ... I grew up With "G.I. Joe" and I don't really have an interest in a live action version..

"A Perfect Getaway" does look interesting ... since AMC theaters does 5.00 showings before 12:00 Noon all week long now, This is a film I will catch before the weeks end!

"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" is a Potter film that will be quickly forgotten, even by Harry's most ardent fans.

If I'm a moron Delgren, then that would make you the stupidest person on the planet :)

I love GI Joe. Talked about them needing to make it into a live action for years. Yeah it could have been better, but I certainly don't think it failed as badly as you guys want it to.

And your Batman thing is half right, half wrong, as in yes I would be upset if there was another director who came in AFTER Nolan and messed it up, which is needless to say everyone on here would be upset about that. But that's not the point, GI Joe just started, it has no sequels yet. Maybe another director will take it on who knows. Maybe some of the actors won't return who knows.

Your last paragraph is omitted due to overuse of stupidity and false accusations. I mean honestly duder, how would you like it if I just said random shit like you like to finger your sister while she's on her period AND then try to tie it SOMEHOW to this topic? What is going through your head as you type? I'm not insulting you really, I'm actually curious as to why anyone would think that'd be cool or relevant to say goats prostate popping? I understand you are exaggerating but it's pushing it. If I have no taste (which is hilarious btw) then why would I like so many movies? Dur! Yeah just argued your point there little buddy sorry. If I had bad taste (which I don't) I would like Hannah Montana films and lets see, High School Musical films, The Grudge films, The Ring films, Starship Troopers 2, Steven Seagal movies, old westerns (sorry they are boring), and a few others I can't think of. Everything else I've watched, liked, a lot more than others, but I don't shit talk every film like most people do on here. "OMG another remake" cry cry cry cry cry. "OMG this movie sucks dick and I can't think up anything more macho than the word dick or cock so I'll use it excessively without a valid point or reason other than to show how ungay I am and how gay you are!" - The summary of user comments on here lol.

I seriously only see like 6 or 7 people who make sense on these topics usually. They are Agent Vis, The Fallen, JA Ottley, Moviebuff, Space101, Diaigma, Vampire2000, and Shelley.

Mikehd, you're being unfair. Worst movie of the year? Hardly. Story wise it was better than Transformers 2. I liked it more than Harry Potter too.

If you guys were real fans you'd love it and not hate it. ALL I FUCKING CARED ABOUT WAS SNAKE EYES, THAT'S FUCKING IT. You guys can go bump chests over something else. I'm glad there's people like you, that way when I goto the theater it's not crowded, let alone have some annoying mother fucker hitting my chair with their foot or leg (which is probably how you guys are in the theaters). You're that annoying person you want to turn around and say "shut the fuck up" to.

this movie isn't even close to transfomer 2 the special effects where horrible what ever garbage company that did the special effects don't even compare to industrial light and imagine the critics didn't like transfomers 2 but 1 thing they did say it was the best special effects they ever so this was the worst movie of the year by far

Your a moron Chad. That said, for the same reason every body enjoys the new Batman franchise is the same reason Joe fans were looking forward to a G.I.Joe franchise that wasn't taken into the realms of one dimensional bullshit.

Batman was a comic and a cartoon with unrealistic stories and unrealistic characters, yet one director thought he could give it some credibility, and now you have a franchise that every one loves and fights over whether Robin should be in the next Batman because it will make it a joke. So why couldn't the same been done here.

Maybe G.I.Joe wasn't your bread and butter as a kid, but it sure as hell was mine and a lot of others, and the last thing any of us wanted was some fuck face producer and garbage director to go to town on it, doing what ever they pleased cause they thought it would make a buck. I'm sure if Nolan left tomorrow and some one did that to Batman you'd be posting up all kinds of angry shit.

And to argue it was good because of eye candy, epileptic action enemas, and arrows shot at peoples faces certifies you as a class 'A' Fuckoroonie with no taste what so ever other than to be entertained by watching a goats prostate popping.

Rotten Tomatoes is so unaccurate because the people that actually critique films seem to hate movies (which is kinda funny and contradictory in itself). Most movies I see on there have terrible reviews and to me this is just me, but most people are wrong. As bad as that sounds that's how I think when it comes to movies. I like a lot of movies, for me to bitch about a movie it's gotta be pretty bad or have huge flaws lol. I'm not saying my word is law but to me, what's the point of watching movies if no one seems to like them? I don't even know how GI Joe gets low reviews when it has plenty of eye candy. It's not dumb like The Grudge movies etc (which I can see getting low scores). In today's world, more people hate things than love things. Especially movies. I think the only movie that pretty much has 95% positive reviews was The Dark Knight. And even then there were still random people who didn't like it. So it's proof that even if you make a great film, people still want to hate it despite how popular or well done it is. Strange world eh?

Delgren, *sigh* why do you over exaggerate everything all the time? How is the movie a joke? It's GI Joe. Cartoons were unrealistic, characters were unrealistic as well, so what makes you THINK that a live action version would be shakespeare? It was funny, had lots of action (which is the whole concept like Transformers), and it was corny at times. Nothing out of the usual. It WAS more violent then the cartoons by far of course people getting stabbed and shot in the face was pretty rad lol. I think they need to work on the dialogue for the sequel (which seemed to be the weakest thing about the movie) and maybe go with the old school look for Cobra Commander next time around (for the fans).

I think they should have done a proper intro of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow's past in the beginning of the movie instead of Destro's ancestor. Or hell even a Duke introduction would have made more sense. I thought Marlon Wayans did great (and for some reason everyone seems to hate him). Some small cliche things like the love interest thing with Duke and you know who (preventing spoilers here). Overall though, it was entertaining and I think people need to be fair about it and give it a break. It's not shit it's not bad it's a fun film and that's it. Don't need to freak out and call it names that's taking it a little far. It's just a movie, so relax people who hated it. You have other movies to choose from. Let the people like myself who enjoyed it fucking enjoy it. Don't discourage others, that's just selfish of you.

This movie was a joke, and they raped Cobra Commander. Everything about him is bad including the mask, the most cliche bad guy voice ever. I don't know where they pulled this so called source material from, but all the character back stories where hokey as shit. I hope this movie flops so they can revamp it later on.

Wow, Diaigma, you really base your opinions on what a movie critic review site says. I'll see or won't see a movie no matter what anyone says. If it interests me I'll see it, if it doesn't I won't, plain and simple.

First off, stop putting spoilers in the comments people it's fucking annoying. 2ndly, it was much better than Tranformers 2 so I don't want to see all this bitching about it. 3rdly, this is sad that it got such low numbers. The funny part is that I mention the crappy trailer to people and they're like 'the trailers looked good to me' but they didn't go see the movie. It was the opposite for me, I hated the trailers but enjoyed the movie. The trailers don't give it justice at all.
