McG Speaks Out on Terminator Salvation Post-Production!

Source:  Warner Bros. Pictures
The official website for Terminator Salvation has been updated with a new Blog entry by director McG. The film stars Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin, Bryce Dallas Howard, Moon Bloodgood, Common, Jadagrace and Helena Bonham Carter. Check out the latest blog below.

The Future So Far...

We wrapped principal photography. Now we're heavy into post. I've already shown early cuts to Christian and Sam. They seem pleased with where the film is headed. Our focus is on story and character, but it's fun diving into the world of visual effects.

It feels like the responsibility of any Terminator film to reinvent the wheel of effects with every outing. The first movie was a stunning achievement in animatronics and practical effects from Stan Winston. The second film brought us liquid metal, which was a true revolution in the effects world. Robert Patrick's (T-1000) head coming apart and putting itself back together again looks as good today as ever.

Charlie Gibson is aware of his responsibility as the VFX supervisor and second unit director of this film. He works with ILM and Asylum every day and makes revisions to the finest detail. We want the patina of the machines to be dirty and heavy and perfectly realistic - that's why we built so much practically with Stan Winston. But at some point the effects kick in and like any Terminator fan, Charlie wants his mind blown. There's one sequence in particular where we're trying to achieve something that's never been done before. I don't want to talk about it because we haven't been successful yet...

But we're working on it.

It's very interesting working with Conrad Buff every day. First of all he was the editor on Terminator 2 so it's very comforting having his steady hand at the Avid. Long before we ever began we talked about what excited us about making this film. It was the notion of the world after judgment day. We set out to create a world that honored the Terminator mythology but was its own new beginning. Every day I learn from Conrad as he makes the elegant choices of a disciplined filmmaker. It feels great to have his confidence in the movie. I take his opinion very seriously, he provides a daily litmus test for what is worthy of a Terminator film.

Most importantly, Christian and Sam bring power to the rolls of John Connor and Marcus Wright. This is a story of two destinies colliding. Connor is part of a resistance comprised of the ethnicities that make up the globe. This film is so much more that just Los Angeles. It reflects the global crisis of man, all of man versus machine.

Terminator Salvation is set to open in theaters this summer on May 22nd, 2009.

The first two were geat I especially enjoyed the second. Now I can't wait for this. I am shaky on McG still, but he seems really into and dedicated to this film. Bale is in it and sounds awesome. I have faith in it. Will it be the best, no. Will it be good, hopefull yes. I'm sure the sequel will be better than this one because they will have their bearings right.
What I think are the Terminator charts:
Terminator 1
Terminator Salvation possible sequel or T5
Terminator 2 Judgment day
Terminator Salvation
Terminator 3 Rise of the machines

haha I'm with ya killedbill, I liked all the Matrix films too, I thought the the last fight scene in Revolutions was bad ass (raining on the street). I think they shoulda ended the movie better though instead of a sunset lol which was stupid.

I only liked parts of T3. The dream scene of the future with the machines walking around, the coffin squad scene with arnold was cool, and the ending with the nukes going off and the music they played just hit ya with a feeling of 'well fuck' lol. But I loved it.

Sounds like to me that all of the talent of the production genuinely care about the Terminator mythology and delivering the special effects that the first two films set a high standard for.

Arnold is in T4, but, just a cameo role via computer effects.

i agree killedbill. They've got a story to finish telling. Terminator can't just end after T2. It would be like cutting off Star Wars at Empire, and just leaving it how it is. I commend any director who has the balls to approach the Terminator franchise and try and do it justice. The last dude failed, not horribly, T3 had its moments, but it was an overall miss. Someone needs to make these movies, someone needs to finish this story, since James Cameron seems to be over it.

I loved T3 for ending, I love postapocalypse pictures and movie was OK, but not very good. I think that T4 will be better than T3 and little worse than Cameron's movies.

I gotta be the only person i know who enjoyed T3.

I think because I really just like the story that is being told. If the story went just how i wanted it to, then i would just say it was all too predictable. Im bummed Arnie isnt back but I like bale a lot. So i really just wanna see where the story will go next.

Its like the matrix movies. Everyone BITCHED about how they should have left it alone after one, but i loved all three of them because i really liked the story that was being told. So i cant wait for t4!

T3 was poor and that was with Arnie in it. Let the franchise be rembered Let Terminator be remebered for the first 2 ground-breaking, record-breaking movies that they are!!

I liked Reign of Fire. The only Christian Bale movie i thought stunk bad was Shaft but he wasn't even the star. Do i think this movie will be better than T1 or T2? Nope. Do i think it'll be better than T3? I sure hope so.

I'll have faith in what they do. This is going to top the last three films, I bet.

I have no faith in McG. At first I thought that Christian Bale might be able to save the movie, but then I remembered that he was also in Reign of Fire. I could be wrong, but I think this movie will blow. I'll still see it for the special effects though.
