BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: Bruno Spruces Up the Box Office with $30.4 Million

Source:  Box Office Mojo

Weekend Box Office

1) Bruno $30.4 million
2) Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs $28.5 million
3) Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen $24.2 million
4) Public Enemies $14.1 million
5) The Proposal $10.5 million
6) The Hangover $9.9 million
7) I Love You, Beth Cooper $5 million
8) Up $4.6 million
9) My Sister's Keeper $4.1 million
10) The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 $1.6 million

Despite stirring up controversy all across America, Sacha Baron Cohen's latest comedy Bruno perched itself atop the weekend box office charts with a hefty $30.4 million. Though better than Borat's opening of $26.4 million in 2006, that film was only released on 837 screens. Bruno premiered with a whopping 2,756 screens. So it seems audiences weren't as willing to be duped by this fashionista character, with quite a few of them calling him "less lovable" than Cohen's Kazakhstan's counterpart. Only time will tell how Bruno fares throughout the rest of summer.

This weekend's only other major release was Chris Columbus' return to teen cinema with I Love You, Beth Cooper. Despite being adapted from the hugely popular comedic novel of the same name by Larry Doyle, and a stellar cast of up and coming jokesters such as Paul Rust, Jack Carpenter, and Lauren Storm, this Hayden Panettiere laugher failed to stir up much interest at the box office. It dropped in way down at number seven, and could only muster up $5 million. This was even lower than summer 2009's all-time low with Eddie Murphy's Imagine That, which pulled in $5.5 million on its opening weekend.

On the arthouse circuit, Lynn Shelton's mumble core dramedy Humpday managed to get the highest per screen average. This film, about two male friends that almost sleep with one another, pulled in $29,000 from just two screens. That's an average of $14,500 per screen. Also playing in limited release was Blood: The Last Vampire, which pulled in $103,000 playing on 20 screens. And Soul Power which earned an impressive $25,100 playing on just six screens across the country.

Next weekend belongs to just one man. Or boy. Or, rather, young adult just now coming into his wizardhood. That's right, Wednesday will finally see the release of the long awaited sixth installment in J.K. Rowling's hugely popular franchise Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Critics are speculating that it could open bigger than Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. And that would be no small feat for Harry and the gang.

Diagma... 100 million in 5 days? It'll be closer to 200 million. It should take in about 80 million on Wed and Thurs and another 100 million over the weekend. There will be no competition at all. There are no other new releases this week except HP.

HOLY!!!

Hp has 97% on the RTM! That's the highest percentage of the whole series!

The real question then, is, how big will it dominate?

I'm guessing 100 million minimum, for the first 5 days.

(seeing as how most shows in my town are already sold out, INCLUDING the 6:30 AM Wednesday showing. GLAAA!) :P

Borat>Bruno
Bruno had some funny parts but it's not something special. The Hangover is the best comedie so far in 2009. Gay jokes...ok,no prob. Gay sex scenes....just hilarious bullshit. I didn't like Borat that much neither but Borat is better. "Niiiiiice,How much?" XD

Bruno just wasn't that funny, and Beth Cooper was just terrible. Hayden Panetierre has no acting ability at all.

I also thought I would point out that B. Alan Orange "predicted" I Love You, Beth Cooper would be a surprise summer smash and that The Hangover would bomb. Ha ha. Even someone who is not into box office tracking could have told you Beth Cooper would bomb miserably. The marketing campaign and trailer were so God-awful that it physically made you cringe everytime an ad was ran.How Christopher Colombus helmed this movie is beyond me. Go Bruno. The film deserved to be #1. Glad to see rated R movies can still take the #1 spot (even with Ice Age 3 and Transformers 2 out!)

People taking their kids to the film ought to be ashamed. A ten-year-old couldn't possibly understand the satire enough to make an impact on him; if anything, it might foster animosity toward homosexuals in younger viewers who can't understand what's going on below the surface and the gags.

I heard people walked out of this movie. Americans are such fucking prudes, and hypocrites.

Not suprised at all. Bruno looks good but not nearly as funny as Borat. Ill probably check it out. But HP will be great.

mindless232 well said the movie did do a decent job in regards to that, just the whole anal sex and the whole exposure of his cock was over used....also maybe the fact there were three 10 yr olds in front of me watching it, made it worse

its hilarious how people think the movie is hateful or against homosexuals. did yall watch the movie? fuck! it was exploiting the ridiculous reasons people have for homosexuals to not be treated equal. like the part with the adopted baby. or the dumb fucking churchs that have programs to make gays straight. its crazy how many people are still out the that feel insecure around gay people. grow the fuck up. shit

Newkill I am gay and I absolutely loved it. I found it fucking hysterical. Especially the religious officials trying to "convert" him. That is just so pathetically sad.

"Bruno" was #1!! I guess people who like Sacha Baron Cohen would see it ...me I won't waste my money on hate.

I can't wiat to see "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" been long time coming....!

I tried to see "The Hurt Locker" ..but "All" the showings for 07/12/2009 were sold-out!

This was the only weekend in my entire life that I can recall that I actually didn't see a film in theater...I'm having massive withdrawals!!

Ahhhhhh!! Damn I wish some good film had opened in Phoenix with a showing I could have at least gotten into.

I knew it would hit number one, but its gonna plummet next weekend. The film didn't offend me at all, but Cohen relied way too much on the dick and gay jokes instead of being a little more inventive. Also, many of the skits look obviously staged... unlike the Borat ones. I just didn't like the movie... not because its offensive, but because of its creativeness... or lack of, I should say.

I honestly don't think it'll hit 100 million like its predecessor.

well let some of these movies succeed at their own level
Im glad 'Beth Cooper' made some money, I didnt hate it like alot of critics did
Bruno to me looked too much like a cop-out of Borat, Im not a fan of Sascha Baron Cohen
