Did he retire after his '80s streak or something? Or did his flicks just get bad after that? Ya know with the changing of the times and such.

"REAL SMOOTH CLIFF"... Mr. Hughes thanks for the memories, you were the encyclopedia, and instruction manual for my youth in the 80's. thank you for giving us films full of characters that will last a lifetime, and giving us characters we could relate to, could laugh at, and fall in love with. there truly will never be anyone that comes close to who we are that fell in love with your films, then you Mr. Hughes. you are sincerely one of my heroes of film making and screen writing and your films will live on as they were intended to do. Rest in piece.

Saturday, March 24,1984. Shermer High School, Shermer, Illinois, 60062. Dear Mr. Vernon, We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. What we did *was* wrong. But we think you're crazy to make us write an essay telling you who we think we are. What do you care? You see us as you want to see us - in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. You see us as a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal. Correct? That's the way we saw each other at 7:00 this morning. We were brainwashed.

Wow, just woah. He made so many great films and made such an impact on movies and pop culture and culture as a whole. He was an icon of the 80s and icon still to this day. A testament to that is that although he created most of his films for the 80s audience he still struck a powerful chord with me and im a 90s baby by birth, but an 80s one at heart.
His legacy will live on in the films he made and the people he influenced and inspired. He spoke to everyone through everything he made incuding my personal favorite The Breakfast Club.
Everyone could relate to someone in that movie and that really meant something to me and many of his fans.
May you Rest In Peace Mr. Hughes

John Hughes died today. I guess the obvious thing to say is a big part of my awkward teenage years died with him. His '80s teen films "Sixteen Candles," "The Breakfast Club" and "Pretty in Pink" helped define my generation.

Rest in peace, John Hughes. Thanks for laughs along the road.

I just saw on the news that iconic 80's director John Hughes passed away today. That's a total shock...he was only 59 years old. Hughes was the seminal teen comedy movie director who tapped into the zetgeist of the times and showed that teenagers were multifacted, not just numb archetypes looking to get laid. Fortunately he has left a superlative cinema legacy that many generations love. R.I.P.
