BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: Audiences Get Obsessed with $28.5 Million

Source:  Box Office Mojo
Weekend Box Office:

1) Obsessed $28.5 million
2) 17 Again $11.6 million
3) Fighting $11.4 million
4) The Soloist $9.7 million
5) Earth $8.5 million
6) Monsters Vs. Aliens $8.5 million
7) State of Play $$6.8 million
8) Hannah Montana: The Movie $6.3 million
9) Fast & Furious $6 million
10) Crank High Voltage $2.4 million

Forcing an incredible upset at the box office this weekend, Beyonce Knowles went toe to toe with Ali Larter in one of the greatest catfights ever witnessed on the silver screen and won the top spot with $28.5 million. It is the eighth highest opening weekend earner of the year, surprising most industry insiders with its ability to win an audience. It certainly proved that Beyonce Knowles can open bigger than Zac Efron, whose body-morphing comedy 17 Again took a hit, dipping down into second place for its second weekend on the charts. The film pulled in another $11.6 million, bringing its cumulative grossed to $39.9 million.

Three other new high profile films flooded the box office this past weekend. Fighting was number three with $11.4 million, while Robert Downey Jr.'s drama The Soloist tried to keep up in fourth place with $9.7 million. Disneynature's Earth, while playing on half as many screens as its competitors, only managed to climb into the number five spot with $8.5 million.

Despite a number of smaller films opening across the country, Obsessed managed to hold the second highest per screen average of the weekend, taking in an estimated $11,337 on each of its 2,514 screens. The film with the highest per screen average was the documentary Nursery University, which managed to pull in a whopping $13,100 on just one screen. Trailing behind was biographical documentary Tyson, which nabbed $7,818 on each of its eleven screens for an $86,000 take, and Il Divo, which made $14,000 on just two screens.

Next weekend marks the official start of the summer movie going season. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is set to drop, as is the romantic comedy Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. Who'll win? Heck, it might just be Beyonce Knowles again!

People saw Obsessed to see Ali Larter rip her clothes off on a big screen

The Soloist deserved #1 spot. But it doesn't matter anyway. X-Men Origins: WOLVERINE will take over.

The Soloist does deserve a better spot than number 4, but i wouldn't call it a number one quality film. Not that i'm calling Obsessed a great number one movie.

The Soloist "deserved' the number 1 spot; but if you want to give it to a campy thriller starring Beyonce; that's your choice. Mine remains with the Soloist; along with my eight dollars.

Obsessed was an unintentional comedy. I'm more surprised that Fighting was even in the top 10. I'm looking forward to Wolverine, but not that hyped up about, just like how i am for this whole 2009 summer movie line up. But whoever thinks just because a movie drops or does bad in the box office doesn't mean it's a bad film. Look at Spider Man 3; hell, look at Batman and Robin, which got to the top spot when it came out. Two bad movies. Now, look at Crank 2. Great movie and great modern day blaxpoitation film, but did it ever get to the number one spot, no.

Obsessed was so bad and Fighting just had nothing good about it. The Soloist and Earth were both really good though. I thought The Soloist would have been number one.

It is pretty pointless to say that Wolverine will be #1 next week. I, however, think that it won't live up to the hype, and the box office numbers will drop big time after week 1.
And I didn't see Obsessed taking the spotlight this week. It looks terrible. I thought the Soloist had it for sure, or at least that stupid 17 Again crap might have had it one more time

the only reason I can figure that "Obsessed" was #1 this weekend was cuz of Stringer Bell. But how the fuck "17 Again" & "Fighting" beats out "the soloist" is beyond me.

wow
i didn't count on Obsessed being #1 this weekend :0
hm, guess people love a good catfight
Fighting was boring, Earth was good though

yeah Wolverine will make big bucks! :)

BAH HAHAHAHA Are they kidding??? They actually think Obsessed will outperform Wolverine? Even with the bootleg version out, the film will still kill Knowles and Larter. Obsessed will fall to at least 16 million.... and if Wolverine can't beat THAT.... then we can officially say the movie sucked. I doubt that will happen though. Audiences are still going to go in droves to the theater to see Logan kick some ass. Wolverine #1 next week.... guaranteed.

Wolverine will be top box office, but will it live up to the hype?...hmmm

Of course Wolverine will be #1, only five more days!

There is no way that "Wolverine" is NOT going to get to the top spot next weekend.
