Mark Millar Sets His Eyes on Superman Revamp

Source:  Daily Record
One might think that with one film based on his original comic opening to rave reviews (Wanted) and another original property being currently adapted (Kick-Ass) that Mark Millar would want to continue working with his original creations. Instead, the hot young Scottish writer revealed to UK's Daily Record that the next comic-based film he hopes to work on is Superman.

Millar said:

Since I was a kid I've always wanted to reinvent Superman for the 21st century.

I've been planning this my entire life. I've got my director and producer set up, and it'll be 2011. This is how far ahead you have to think.

The Superman brand is toxic after that last movie lost 200 million, but in 2011 we're hoping to restart it.

Sadly I can't say who the director is, but we may make it official by Christmas.

But fingers crossed it could work out, that would be my lifetime's dream.

What Millar's statement means compared to other news that we have heard about the next planned Superman film, Superman: The Man of Steel, is currently unclear. Is Bryan Singer in or out? What about film stars Brandon Routh, Kate Bosworth and Kevin Spacey?

Keep reading MovieWeb and SuperheroFlix for the latest news about Superman: The Man of Steel as it becomes available.

Superman can be dark in the comics cuz he has over 70 years worth of story and run out of goddamn ideas!!!!!!!! When u have a movie, especially a reboot, ur supposed to take the best attributes bout the hero and build that from the ground up. Superman is a beacon of light and hope. His colors are red, blue, and yellow, not black and gray. The colors even have symbols: blue is the sky, yellow is the sun, and red is blood. Superman has godlike powers and u people want him beating up thugs on the street like batman!! Get over urselves!!!! His movie should be a special effects extravaganza, and that means lots of bright fucking colors!!!!!!!!!

Let's see what Millar is capable of. I'd love to see Superman reaching the 21st century, because i'm tired of the same silver age crap in his ongoing comic book series.

(Except All-Star Superman which I LOVE!)

Happy to hear it will be a restart to the series, The Superman story always had potential to mak great movies, but it just hasnt happened, Superman Returns was decent, but there were so many inconsistencies (sp) that it made it hard to think of it as a sequel or a stand alone. To be honest, my favorite non comic version of the superman story was the Lois and Clark tv show(except when H.G Wells came in). The personal struggles, Lex Luthor being a bent business man, etc. I would also like to see them start bringing in different bad guys. Sick of Lex, although he is important.

Ya building giant islands have to cost millions on dollars imagine the dirt invold alone.. LOL I know it was CGI just screwing with you.

July 2nd, 2008 4:55pm
well all the freakin animation it costed millions of dollars and the museum robbery scene and when he took the island and threw it outerspace and when he took that long as fall and the flashback scenes... and other things it costed a lot

How can you have a crime story with fighting violence in it and call it a happy family film. And yes Superman has been dark at times, it's a D.C comic it's not Marvel.

July 2nd, 2008 4:18pm
Superman isn't susposed to be dark, he was never dark. They need to keep it a happy family film rather than an adult film.

If they reboot that would take a lot of time. I agree with Joker211 they should call it Superman, then The Man of Steel. But then it may go in the direction of the new Batman.

Why does everybody want Superman to darker. Just curious? I hear that a lot when it comes to Superman.
I'm not going into the whole how the villain should be thing. Restart the franchise in 2011 might be a bad thing, since nobody seems to like Superman Returns.

July 2nd, 2008 3:31pm
They should call the reboot "Superman" and then the sequel should just be called "The Man Of Steel".

I am absolutely jacked to see a complete reboot. I love Bryan Singer, but his movie really just ended what Richard Donner started. It will be nice to see the fresh approach to live action Supes.

Appreciate guys, I mean it's time. Even the city looked down right fake. It just looked like the whole movie was on a green screen, and I'm not a huge fan of that. I mean use some locations, create the Superman world with various city's and shoot it on Imax, and maybe find a way to implant the Daily Planet Globe into a city instead of using C.G.I. to create it.

Superman Returns sucked ass!! Let's hope this one's darker!

joker211... you da man!!!

July 2nd, 2008 2:54pm
Joker211 You may be on to something an slightly older war torn Superman ponduring if he is still able to be the defender of truth, justice, and the american way. With some real villans how many times can you fight Lex Luthor a simple human with no super powers over and over again. I think that could the darker movie we all are wanting to see.

I agree comic guy. It's amazing how music can change a tone of a movie. I think it's time for a new theme, because superman returns theme was absolute crap. Routh was crap too,(I mean can we have a much older Superman I mean not some model). I say throw everything about "Superman Returns" and start new do something more mature.
