Evan Daugherty Set for Grayskull

Source:  The Hollywood Reporter
GrayskullWarner Bros. and Silver Pictures have signed on Evan Daugherty to write the latest draft of Grayskull, the studio's big-screen version of Mattel's He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon and toy line.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, John Stevenson (Kung Fu Panda) is attached to direct the adaptation of the show, which followed a blond warrior named Prince Adam who, when uttering the magic words, "By the power of Grayskull -- I have the power," turned into the heroic He-Man. He and his allies -- Battle Cat, Man-at-Arms and Orko -- defended their planet Eternia from the evil forces of Skeletor, who tried week after week to conquer the fortress Castle Grayskull, which imbued He-Man with his powers.

Warners sees the big-screen version as a gritty fantasy and reimagines Adam as a soldier who sets off to find his destiny, happening upon the magical world of Eternia. There, Skeletor has raised a technological army and is bent on eradicating magic.

Justin Marks penned the previous draft.

No production date has been set.

Usually the one that writes the first draft is the story creator, and that person usually goes on to do the other drafts.

Unless they fired him, maybe they dont think he is the one for the job. Or he is gone on to do a different job
I.E - Spiderman 4, first draft by Vanderbilt and because Vanderbilt went on to do another film they hired that Abire guy.

I can't even believe that Justin Marks is writing Voltron and attempting to adapt Shadow Of The Colossus.

The PREVIOUS draft was written by Marks

After Street Fighter, they must have realized he's a hack

a quest is ALWAYS a good idea for a fantasy film!

This sounds good.

Think of the story like this:

A solider being granted the Power Sword over a prince makes more sense, just Hal Jordan, a pilot, was granted the Green Lantern Ring, which enables flight. Being a soldier and going on a "destiny hunt" will have more of a raw feeling than some spoiled prince.

Skeletor's quest to "eradicate magic" might have something to do with his quest to "eradicate He-Man" since his powers are based on...magic. Besides, that doesn't necessarily mean his army will be entirely based on magic, there will probably be some tech fused with magic stuff in there...and if there isn't, so what? It makes sense seeing as how Skeletor is the bad guy...it gives him some purpose instead of being another magical megalomaniac in a world of magic.

Some of Skeletor's followers were tech based, anyway. Trap Jaw had a laser for an arm and a metal jaw, right? Tri-Klops had that freaky helmet that had different "laser settings." Strongarm had a giant metal arm...etc.

OMG I see this being turned into a film where a WWE wrestler will lead. The idea behind it at the moment sounds terrible, I hope it's not true.

Technological army bent on eradicating magic?! WHAT THE F***?!

That had better be the original draft that got trashed, or so help me God...

btw, idk why someone would be bothered by the proposed changes they're making. By the sounds of it, Abrams has changed a lot about Star Trek and we all know the acclaim that film's getting. I think it sounds cool. As long as they make a good script out of it, it should turn out well.

Hopefully, they don't make Skeletor an annoying, monologuing prick.

Gritty doesn't necessarily mean it's trying to relate to the Dark Knight. It doesn't even have to mean dark. When I read "gritty" I thought "whew, they're taking seriously," because the Kung-Fu Panda director was originally supposed to direct...that had kids written all over it.

This news is a sigh of relief.

"Gritty fantasy" isn't uncommon and I'm glad they're referring to this as one. When you have an almost-naked guy who's catchy line is "I HAVE THE POWER!" and rides a giant cat as your hero, and a BLUE, almost-naked guy with a skull-face as your villain, you almost have to refer to it as "gritty" for people to take it seriously.

Hopefully this writer knows what he's doing.

Hopefully it will be good i mean you never know as corny as He Man was with the right minds behind it we could very well have another Transformers on our hands. Im going to hope for the best

hopely it will be better then the first time they made a live action movie and i know the fans hope this new one will be good
He-Man is on my list of cartoons i like from the 80's but still have a bad feeling about this new movie

A reimagining with He-Man as a soldier and Skeletor's army being of technoligical constitution? This gets a "Are you F*ckin' Kidding Me?" and a "Reimagining is shorthand for Destroy the Mythology for Profits" and its adjunct: "Screw the Fans for Today's Kids' Dollars."

This is not the Masters of the Universe I wanted to see...the original material is a great fantasy epic that is getting basterdized in the "make everything gritty-post Dark Knight Studio Executive Group Think."

The cartoons were great back in the day...the Dolph Lundgren movie adaption Absolutely Sucked! The only thing it has going for it is kitsch value (so bad its good in its particular way). Dolph also screwed up Punisher back then too btw. He should be worth seeing in the cool ensemble Expendables action extravaganza though.

...execs should look at each property on an individual basis.

totally waiting on this movie... been waiting since that ridiculous Dolph Lundgren version came out and BOMBED! even as a kid i thought it was terrible. it lacked everything that was Eternia. I say keep it all fantasy - there's no need to go to earth or have a human go to eternia. just tell the story well and make sure the CGI doesn't look CGI (like Star Wars Eps 1-3). Can't wait to see Battle Cat/Cringer, Orko, the real Teala (not the Dolph movie version), and a scary/quarky skeletor! they could launch this franchise or doom it forever based on this film. hope it works!!!

i agree with err that 80's one is still very watchable even though it is out dated but still fun to watch, i think they are trying to do to much for this one already

skeletor is bent on eradicating magic?
a walking, talking skeleton?
bent on eradicating magic?

sounds about right.
i'd like to take this moment to point out that the original dolph lundgren version is still surprisingly watchable and entertaining despite being very dated as an obvious construct of the 80's.

Why do they always feel they have to rip the story to shreads!?!?
Leave Adam as the prince of Eternia! Leave Skeletor as a
warlock-esque villian!

Don't know who he is, but it's gotta be better than Marks, who I've completely lost faith in after the piece of shit that was Street Fighter

I like that they're referring to it as a "gritty fantasy," but why don't they call it "The Masters of the Universe?"
