According to
Superman Homepage, it looks all the original
Superman films are going to be getting "the treatment" on DVD.
On a recent telephone interview with Ilya Salkind, the person who co-produced the first three
Superman films,
Supergirl, and the
Superboy television series, he confirmed that he is currently doing work with Michael Thau, the Producer and Restoration Supervisor on the 2001 Special Edition of
Superman: The Movie. Salkind is also doing work with others to now produce new versions of the original
Superman films for a DVD release that hopes to take place in coordination with 2006's
Superman Returns.
"[T]he five DVDs are coming out," Salkind said .
Salkind is working with Time Warner (who owns all the footage) on this project. Salkind goes on to say, "I'm in touch with Michael Thau and I'm also in touch with another guy who does the documentaries and [DVD special features]."
He also said that he plans to "do commentaries of [
Superman] I, II, and III [and] Pierre [Spengler] did his already." He then talked about the
Supergirl DVD. "I'm going to do a commentary...and this time hopefully Helen [Slater] will do it... ."
The fourth installment of the
Superman saga,
Superman IV: The Quest for Peace wasn't produced by the Salkind family, but he thinks that Time Warner does in fact own the footage to that film.
On top of all this, it looks like Richard Donner, who directed the first
Superman, will finally get to have his portions of
Superman II seen. He was fired off the production of the sequel and replaced by Richard Lester. Currently, it seems like both versions from both directors are going be available on these new DVDs, although Donner's supplemental materials could play as just that and not a completely re-edited film.
