BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: Up Still Tops at the Box Office with $44.2 Million

Source:  Box Office Mojo

Weekend Box Office

1) Up $44.2 million
2) The Hangover $43.2 million
3) Land of the Lost $19.5 million
4) Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian $14.6 million
5) Star Trek $8.4 million
6) Terminator Salvation $8.1 million
7) Drag Me to Hell $7.3 million
8) Angels & Demons $6.5 million
9) My Life in Ruins $3.2 million
10) Dance Flick $2 million

Disney/Pixar's Up remained at the top of the box office charts this weekend, pulling in another $44.2 million. The film, which follows a 78-year-old balloon salesman named Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner) as he fulfils his lifelong dream of visiting the wilds of South America, has now earned $137 million, making it a certified hit. Coming in at number ten on the all-time best box office earnings score chart for a Pixar film, Up still has a long road to hoe before it beats Finding Nemo's number one status. Pixar's popular fish tale managed to earn $339 million back in 2003.

The race for second and third place was an effortless beat down. The R rated comedy The Hangover, which stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zack Galifianakis as three friends searching for their groom the day after his bachelor party, scored a hefty $43.2 million, leaving this week's other big budget comedy, Land of the Lost, in the dust. Though it came in at third place, Will Ferrell's hip retooling of the Sid & Marty Krofft Saturday morning kids' show only managed to bring in $19.5 million. Word of mouth has crushed its success, and it's unlikely we will be hearing from Marshal, Will, and Holly ever again.

Star Trek crept back into the top five after being knocked down to the number seven spot last week. Making another $8.4 million, the film now has a cumulative take of $222 million, making it one of the biggest films of the year thus far. Nia Vardalos return to Greece in My Life in Ruins, the only other major film debuting this week, opened at number nine with $3.2 million, playing on less than half the screens of its competitors.

On the arthouse scene, Sam Mendes' latest comedy Away We Go pulled in $143,000 playing at just four theaters. That makes it the film with the best per screen average, pulling in $35,750 at each of its locations. Martin Provost's French drama Seraphine made $39,500 playing on six screens, while Aaron Woodley's young adult drama Tennessee pulled in $10,000 playing on fifteen screens.

Up could stay locked in its number one position next week, as three R rated films are set to open in unison. The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, Blood: The Last Vampire, and Moon will debut against Eddie Murphy's PG rated kids' film Imagine That. It will be an interesting weekend, to be sure.

that's a perfect title "ikilledbill2wice." the probable failure of this upcoming Eddie Murphy flick should prompt him to abandon these flicks for the comedies he used to do.

"My Life in Ruins" was Ok..not Nia Vardalos's strongest film ...

I had 100% no interest in "Land of the Lost" ...I thought the Tv show as a kid was stupid...and the movie looks the same ...and the reviews confirmed it!

The Hangover is so funny, but I was disappointed with Land of the Lost. It just wasn't good. I had to see Up again to get it out of my head.

I'm another really puzzled by all the bad press for T4. For me it felt like a continuation from the original, without all the cutesy bullsh!t humour of 2 or 3. Its a really good ACTION movie, and a lot of people, especially critics, seem to forget that when watching this movie. I wasn't expecting the steel magnolias with cyborgs for f#cks sake!

Yeah moon looks an absolute gem of a film (cant wait when it comes out over here) but next week i think The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 will just pip up to the number 1 spot!

i can already tell, "Moon" will go unnoticed and of all films out there, it should be getting some attention. how is it ive seen like 20 ads for "imagine that". it should be called "imagine that, eddie used to be funny"

this looks about right. Pixar so far can do no wrong, An Hangover was hillarious! great movie deserves its place while Ferrel has been going down hill for awhile now. Hopefully Hollywood takes notice of the fact that people wont see every half assed attempt at a long dead francise remake an start coming "UP" with some original ideas. heres hopeing

Star Trek was also a 3.5 for me for numerous reasons (my 115th review currently on my profile page), and T4 was definitely not a 5 star movie given the lack of character development, incorrect timeline in correlation with the original film, and an overall underwhelming story, but everyone's got their opinions i guess.

You're right about Will Ferrel Newkill, he's definitely lost his comedic touch over the past few years, as his childish comedic style which usually scores with fans is now just, well, childish.

And i didn't even see Ice Age 2, but heard it wasn't as good as #1 (typical of youngster aimed cgi flicks), so I agree with TheBD that it most likely won't outgross Up by the end of its box office run, nor do i think it'll match its early weekend intake like that of Up in the past 2 weekends.

no way IA3 will out gross Up, and The Hangover was fucking amazing, second best movie so far this summer, Trek being the best.

The Hangover was number one on Friday. Guess it couldn't hold on. Terminator 4 deserves better than 3.5 stars. It's a five star flick. Looks like Will Ferrell has lost his touch in blockbusters.

3.5 for Terminator 4, but I'm with you, it wasn't terrible, and is deserving of a sequel...and it got 2! The next is said to film next year for a summer 2011 release of all goes well.

And "Up" staying up at the box office aint surprising. Pixar always succeeds for the first 2 weekends at least.

I don't understand why everyone is saying that Terminator Salvation was a bad movie, it wasn't. It was a more then decent film, why is everyone saying it was terrible? I hope they do the sequal cause I would defiently see it.

Hey, Jono, I'm 100% with you. I'm a yank, and I'm pissed that so many critics are bitching about that great movie. Fuck them. There going to come out with two more, regardless. Don't worry Jono we'll see I'll trilogy. Because I know it's going to make tons overseas. And don't forget about Dvd and tv deals. This movie will make it all up. So fuck those basterds.
