BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: Inglourious Basterds Slays the Box Office Competition with $37.6 Million

Source:  Box Office Mojo
Weekend Box Office:

1) Inglourious Basterds - $37.6 million
2) District 9 - $18.9 million
3) G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra - $12.5 million
4) The Time Traveler's Wife - $10.02 million
5) Julie & Julia - $9 million
6) Shorts - $6.6 million
7) G-Force - $4.2 million
8) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince $3.5 million
9) The Ugly Truth - $2.85 million
10) Post Grad - $2.8 million

Business was a-boomin for Quentin Tarantino's two-and-a-half-hour war film in its opening weekend. Inglourious Basterds had no trouble taking the top spot at the box office with an impressive $37.6 million estimated take in its opening weekend. The film was showing in 3,165 theaters and scored a hefty $11,881 per-screen average. The film earned just over half of its $70 million budget in its first weekend in theaters and, with the summer season winding down, it should do healthy business in the fall season.

Some holdovers showed some promising endurance this week as well, with District 9 taking second place with an estimated $18.9 million, dropping just 49% from last weekends tally, with a cumulative gross of $73.4 million after 10 days in theaters. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and The Time Traveler's Wife showed its legs as well in third and fourth place with $12.5 million and $10.02 million respectively. Aside from the Basterds, though it wasn't the greatest weekend for the other new releases.

Robert Rodriguez's Shorts could only manage a sixth place finish with an estimated gross of $6.6 million. The film was in almost as many theaters as Tarantino's Basterds (3,105), but only took in a meager $2,126 from those 3,105 theaters. The only other film playing wide, or semi-wide, was the Alexis Bleidel comedy Post Grad, which took in just $2.8 million from 1,959 theaters for a dismal $1,429 per-screen average. Still, it wasn't nearly as bad as X Games 3D: The Movie which took in just $800,000 from 1,399 theaters for a horrendous per-screen average of just $572.

Next weekend is the last weekend of summer and we close out the season with a few new sequels and a new take on Woodstock. H2: Halloween 2, The Final Destination and Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock all battling for box office supremacy to end the summer with a bang. Check back next week to see who triumphs when all of the box office dust has settled.

I'm not trying to pick a fight at all mikehd, I just realized that A LOT of people walk out of your guys theaters lol. I never see anyone walk out of mine, ever. I watched some mom bring her kids to Watchmen and I was sitting like "that mom is in for a treat" lol. And they STILL didn't leave even after the sex scenes so yeah. Just seems like either your theater sucks ass (no offense to you personally), or those people leaving are very weird (why would you leave?), or the other possibility is that a lot of people don't like it when it's busy or crowded so they leave and come back a week later or whatever. (They're stupid for showing up to release showing to begin with).

mikehd, those are the same customers that made Transformers 2 the highest grossing movie of the year. Fuck them.

most of us on movie web enjoy the quality of movies most people were coming out of both ib and district 9 asking for there money back or walking out on them me and my co workers just shake are heads when both these movies was excellent

Maybe Rodriguez should just do writing for now on, because he's just shown with Shorts he can't direct movies.

I've seen D9 and IB and both were awesome! But I will be seeing H2 and maybe FD4 after that.

H2 will most likely take the box office next weekend. TFD will be 2nd or 3rd, and D9 will hands down be 4th. Overall though the summer has passed with few and rarely seen good movies.

Another reason I don't respect Robert Rodriguez is the fact he makes so many "original" dumb movies. I mean the spy kids trilogy was lame, and this proves nearly nobody is interested in Shorts. I mean the only work he did that I like was Desperado and Once Upon A Time In Mexico. come on man! Your better than that.

Slysnide, what are you talking about? Inglourious Basterds is not marketed for the majority of K-12. Tarantino is a genre based director. In fact, this is best opening ever from all his previous films.

this was an excellent movie but its not quentin's best film pulp fiction is 1 of my all time favorites h2 doesn't look that good to me but hopefully i'm wrong when i actually see it

Hmmm. I'd've thought that "Inglourious Basterds" would take in more than that since this was the final big summer weekend as the majority of K-12 return to school this week. Considerably low it seems in contrast to the amount of publicity it's received over the past 6 months. Still good though. I bet it'll be able to beat "H2," or at least I hope it will, cuz higher B.O.R. = Prequel.

i really hope neither H@ or FD-3D isnt #1, movies like that are great rentals, but the only thing about FD that we havent seen before is that the rocks, cars, and shit that kills them flies in our face, not that appealing

Seen it twice already. Once on my computer so Cant wait to go see it at the theater again. Awesome movie.

i think i may try to see H2 is the theatre too, so what if its a remake, at this point only idiots still whine about that sort of thing.
on it's own merits it should at least be entertaining.

Low opening, but expected. H2 will undoubtedly take over next week.

Can't wait to see Basterds, gotta see if Tarantino can top himself. District 9 was. . . different, and G.I. JOE kicked ass! And now this horror fan is really about to blow his load, H2 and Final Destination! I think i need some new underware.

Screw a remake of "H2: Halloween 2" .... a waste of time space!!!

August 24th, 2009 7:28am
"Inglourious Basterds" rocked!!!

Tarantino does not set out to make a war film like any one you have seen before. Instead, he's going for a genre mish-mash to deliver a unique film in and of itself!!

Tarantino's finest effort, the best movie of the year to this point, and a sure-fire contender for Best Picture, plus several acting honors.

Definitely not a surprise in the top 3, Inglorious was great, i got dragged to GI JOE twice this weekend, the acting in most parts is really bad in GI Joe, but i enjoyed the movie, love Cobra's voice at the end, 2 horror movies this weekend i know im going to get dragged to Final Destination for sure

I was actually a bit disappointed...I was expecting more action in the movie, but it was still good personally I don't think this is Tarantino's best one...

Parts of Basterds was definitely awesome. Kinda slow in some parts but they are kind of cat and mouse dialogue parts so it's not so bad. They pay it off with violence and laughs though.
