The Los Angeles Times reports that the rights to the
Terminator franchise are again up for sale.
Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek, who nabbed the science-fiction franchise in 2007 for $25 million and produced this year's
Terminator Salvation, are apparently looking to sell the rights "partially or outright as several companies owned by the duo work their way through bankruptcy."
Anderson and Kubicek own Halcyon Holding Group. They recently hired the financial advisory firm FTI Capital Advisors, if the bankruptcy court approves, to "evaluate strategic alternatives," they said in a statement. Any deal for the rights would have to have an investment in, or outright sale, of said rights.
The Terminator came out in 1984 but the rights to the franchise have been sold more than any other major Hollywood film series. When the film was released, Hemdale Film Corp. (the film's production company), owned a 50% interest in the property. Director James Cameron sold the other half of the rights to producing partner and future wife Gale Anne Hurd for $1.
Carolco Pictures, which was owned by producers Mario Kassar and Andrew Vajna, then picked up Hemdale's stake in 1990 for $10 million. They subsequently released
Terminator 2: Judgement Day the next year. In 1997, after Carolco filed for bankruptcy, they started a new venture, C2 Pictures. C2 then bought the rights "for $8 million and the remaining 50% from Hurd for $8 million."
Then in 2007, Kassar and Vajna sold off their rights to newbie producers Anderson and Kubicek. Since then there have been filings, more filings and more time spent in courts.
So the big question now is will we see
Terminator 5?
Terminator Salvation director McG and star Christian Bale had been high on creating more stories for the franchise, but with the rights changing hands yet again this could make things tougher for that to happen. Also, it seems that the movie was something of a box office disappointment for it's studio Warner Bros.

and thanks for the response Fallen, though I guess we'll see about Bale's attitude...
Sony Pictures? :3
And I do not think someone "deserves some respect" when the accuse me of being a racist, just because they think I'm just an annoying prick. Just because I've debated obvious racial issues that are going on in America. This is the very reason that people don't talk about that. Because whenever someone dares to stand up and challenge the issues and not be apprehensive, they get labeled as racist unjustly.
I like every person. Without diversity, this world would be very boring. I have simply pointed out negative behaviors, on all fronts. I never said that the white man was perfect. But people like Comrade, who I have been debating the issues with, can't pretend that racism doesn't exist in the Black community as well. That's all I have been trying to get through to him. He would not admit that it did. He just kept pointing out the bad things that the white man has done, and then would stand on this soap box as some representative of a lone community of persecution.
Am I not a racist for trying to stand up and defend my community. I know that there are white supremacists, but there are also black supremacists. We need to stop the violence against each other and get along, but the likes of people like Comrade and Aficionado would rather pull the racist card, than actually fess up to their own prejudices.
And you're right about the last comments being immature. I was pissed off at Aficionado's racist comment, when he doesn't even know me and I just insulted him, like he insulted me.
I'm going to tell you this story, that I swear if it is not true, may God strike me down right now. I feel I have to say that because if I didn't, Aficionado or Comrade might just dismiss it.
Just two or three weeks ago, I was coming home from work, when I saw an older white Oldsmobile on the side of the road near the interstate, on the overpass. There was a black lady in the front passenger seat and a little boy in the back. I was in a hurry to get home, to take care of something important. I drove about a mile, when I saw a black man sweating and carrying a container of gas. It was very sunny and hot out. Even though I was in a hurry, I felt compelled to pull over and I waited for the guy to reach me. I asked him if he was going to the car I saw earlier, and he said yes. I gladly offered him the ride and he accepted it. I drove him to his car and he shook my hand and thanked me. I told him that we had to help each other and I felt good for having done it. I have helped Black people more than I can remember. I have helped with changing tires and giving jump starts. I have also helped Hispanic people and others in the same way. I am probably the biggest boy scout I know in this aspect. People in the world never see these acts. All they ever see is the stigma, that the likes of Comrade and Aficionado try to reinforce. I am not a racist, but I am also not a sheep who cowers in fear of the racist card. And I think that's what bothers Comrade. The fact that I won't be pigeon holed or accept a label.
If I was a racist like Comrade and Aficionado try to label me as, I would just say screw the black people and just help the white ones. I never do that. I help everyone.
But you are also right by stating that Movieweb is a place to discuss movies, so let's all respect each other and stop labeling each other racists and cock suckers, when we really don't know that we all at one point might have given the other a lift with a gas can at some point.
It seems that this world is not, and may never be ready to discuss race issues openly, without blasting the other. For that, I am man enough to admit guilt for doing it as much as Comrade did.
Now let's end this racist talk and just talk about what we all love mutually......movies.
"At best, you're an annoying prick, and from what I gather, a racist." Another ignorant asshole who believes hearsay from a race bating kid and leads the lynch mob to burn the hero.
I got one thing to say to you Aficionado. When you're done swallowing, give me a reply with some credibility to it, because you're the one who just sounds like an annoying prick, to come out of nowhere and fuck with me for no reason. Go grow some pubes and jerk yourself blind, you little bastard!
Btw knobie, if you're gonna type 4 sentences, can you do it in the same post or at least delete your older posts and put them in one. Gracious.
And for once I agree 100% with Annoying. They should buy iyt, lock it up, and keep it there a while. A coupld of years. Let a director come to them, which shows he is interested and probably passionate, get Cameron's approval and guidance (like the Hobbit is under Jacksons Guidance) and get this baby restated and cooking. Not a reboot, but a trilogy of mass perportion. Thats my 2 cents.
