BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Owns the Weekend with Another $112 Million

Source:  Box Office Mojo

Weekend Box Office

1) Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen $112 million
2) The Proposal $18.4 million
3) The Hangover $17.2 million
4) Up $13 million
5) My Sister's Keeper $12 million
6) Year One $5.8 million
7) The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 $5.4 million
8) Star Trek $3.6 million
9) Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian $3.5 million
10) Away We Go $1.6 million

As most suspected, Michael Bay's giant robot sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen owned the weekend, earning a little over $112 million. Though it broke many new records, it failed to live up to studio expectations, becoming only the seventh highest grossing opener in cinematic history. Clearly, it was no match for the The Dark Knight, which took in $158 million when it opened in July of last year. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen had the second highest opening day earnings of all time with $60.6 million. The Dark Knight still holds the record with $67 million. As for firsts, Bay's latest action extravaganza, which stars Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, became the highest grossing Wednesday earner of all time, as well as 2009's highest grossing weekend opener. It holds the highest grossing June opening, as well as the top five day grosses for a movie opening on a Wednesday. Domestically, the film has earned a total of $201.2 million. Worldwide, it has pulled in $281.4 million, yet hasn't broken any records on that front. Despite all of these new record setting grosses, the film failed to score with critics. That shouldn't hurt its future potential, as audiences seemed to enjoy it quite a bit. Especially the teens, and that's where most of the repeat ticket sales come from. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen could linger around the top five for the rest of the summer.

Walt Disney's The Proposal stayed on its knees this weekend, earning Anne Fletcher's deportation rom-com another $18.4 million for that coveted second place spot. Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds were able to fend for themselves, and give non-robot loving audiences a hilarious alternative. The film has thus far pulled in an impressive $69 million dollars. Todd Phillip's surprise hit of the summer The Hangover also continues to chug along. It fell to third place during its fourth week in release, earning another $17.2 million. With total earnings of $183.2 million, it is guaranteed to reach the $200 million mark before the end of the summer.

Disney/Pixar's Up, which has remained at the top of the charts for five weeks, dropped to number four with another $13 million to its name. Thus far, the film, which follows a 78-year-old balloon salesman named Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner) as he fulfils his lifelong dream of visiting the wilds of South America, has earned a total of $250 million. Pretty impressive, as it is now the highest grossing film of the year, besting Star Trek, which has now earned $246 million after eight weeks in release. Up is now the number four most successful Pixar film of all time, just surpassing 1999's
Toy Story 2.

This week's only other major new release didn't create much racket. The Cameron Diaz weeper My Sister's Keeper dropped in at number five with just $12 million to its name. I guess nobody was in the mood for a heavy family drama. Kathryn Bigalow's wartime action film The Hurt Locker bested Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen on the per screen average front. The film took in an estimated $36,000 per screen for a total of $144,000 playing in just four theaters. If given the 4,234 screens held by Optimus Prime, the film could have potentially earned $1.5 billion to become the highest grossing film in history.

Next week, the Autobots will have to go head to head with John Dillinger in Michael Mann's Public Enemies, starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale, as well as the rascally prehistoric team from Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. It's quite possible that Manny, Diego, and Sid could cause a major upset at the box office. Hey, anything's possible.

i dont even know what the d actors or b actors mean i think every actor is capable of doing a great job with a good directior but i guess that has nothing to do with the grading scale right?

D list actors? Seems kinda low for such big names. So if Ledger and Shia are Ds, does that make Denzel Washington or John Travolta Bs? Your guys grading system isn't very accurate.

that poll was about they ask people kind of what was the main reason for why they were going to watch TDK and like 40 % said that because that actor die

Transformers 2 is stupid movie with great special effects,CGI and that stuff. Very bad movie but enjoyable becouse of the action....sometimes funny but the most of the time it's not (at least for an adult). I walked out of the cinema dissapointed becouse I liked the first movie very much and I expected better of sequel. I wish I hadn't paid full price for this movie becouse if this make big cash (I'm afraid it will) then the third movie will go in this similar wrong direction which leads to action-packed movie for kids. I still have hope for Transformers 3 but.....Michael Bay,please...don't push it with these children's lame jokes or dush rip offs. (Twins!? Looney gremlin robots!? Terminator chick!? Old thansformer....ok...but with stick and it teleports!? Damn!)
If you wanna see Transformers 3 right now...go to the old metal parts factory and you will hear a spoiler audio of the movie, then watch some pornos and cartoons, there you will find out their new jokes and ideas for the movie. I have some spark of hope for Transformers 3 but I really hate the direction this movie is going........and again:I loved the first one.

What poll were you looking at? If you want to watch D List stars than transformers shia lebouf and megan fox are closer to it than ledger was.

well im not saying that is not a good movie it was but honestly even the polls say that like more than 50 percent of the people who saw TDK was because of that

You cant be serious by claiming that the Dark Knight only made money because Ledger died. Dark Knight was a great movie because it had the perfect story and cast. I would gladly pay to see this movie everyday during this summer like i did last. Batman has a bigger and more loyal fan base than Transformers. If Ledger was a D List actor then why would anyone care about his role in the movie?

again, summer movies should be fun, yes this is true, but this was shit!

worst movie in a long time.

summer movies shouild leave you in "aww" much like iron man, dark knight, star trek, jurasic park, x men 1 & 2 spiderman 1 & 2 even wall-e and up,....these are what summer movies are about.

i wanted my money back for this piece of trash!

As I have said before we can't all have a D list actor die during the making of our movies! ledgers only claim to fame is his gay sex showing with Jake Gylennhal (sorry can't spell that) and overdosing on drugs.

If Shia Lebeouf or Megan Fox die during or after this movie was made we wouldn't be having this convo!

ALRIGHT, TO ALL THE CRITICS OUT THERE...TRANSFORMERS WAS MEANT TO BE A SUMMER, POPCORN MOVIE FOR FUN...SHIT BLOWIN UP AND HOTNESS ALL OVER THE PLACE (FOX) THESE ARE THE SAME GUYS WHO ACTUALLY PICK UP THE SEAT WHEN THEY PISS. IT'S NONSENSE FUN AND STRICTLY FOR THE FANS, GIVING THEM A LIVE ACTION LOOK AT A NOSTALGIC TIME IN THEIR CHILDHOOD...80'S KIDS APPRECIATE THAT! THANK YOU MICHAEL BAY! THIS IS NOT MEANT TO BE THE F'N PIANO FOR CHRIS'T SAKE....YALL GET A LIFE! AS FOR THE DARK KNIGHT COMPARISONS...LET ME JUST SAY THAT THE DARK KNIGHT IS THE BEST COMIC BOOK ADAPTED TO FILM EVER! LEDGER IS A COMIC GOD NOW...PERIOD! BUT! TRUTH IS DARK KNIGHT'S SUCCESS HAD A LOT TO DO WITH LEDGER'S DEATH AS WELL AS HIS PERFORMANCE..TRANSFORMERS STANDS ON ALONE WITH NO ADDTITIONAL PUBLICITY AND DESPITE THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS IT STILL BROKE 200 MIL. NOT TO MENTION THE DVD'S IT WILL SELL IN THE 4TH QTR. ALL HATERS...KISS IT! NOW, THE HANGOVER IS THE PEOPLE'S MOVIE OF THE YEAR. FOR A MOVIE TO COME OUT WITH NO REAL STARS, NO REAL PROMOTION, SUCCEEDING ON PURE WORD OF MOUTH, IT IS THE SURPRISE OF THE DECADE!

This year we packed the summer full of blockbusters, after surprise great movies, after more blockbusters. Just like 07. Damn that summer was PACKED.

Last summer just had TDK, IM, TIH, HB2, and Wanted. Did I miss anything? Oh and Harry Potter. But yeah. This summer; Dang.

Im glad it didnt beat the Dark Knight because the Dark Knight is a better movie in all categories. Its got a lot of competition this week with Public Enemies and Ice Age coming out.

Transformers will have some competition this weekend, but July 8, i highly doubt Bruno will be #1 or #2, Transformers will do well up until July 14 lol, after that its harry potter for the rest of the summer

And also i believe that this film has some legs and that it will stay top of the box office charts for about another week or 2

this movie was awesome. if you haven't seen this yet you need to and don't listen to the people saying that there is no story. there is a story, and comedy, and basically a little of everything. People were just expecting something to compete to the Dark Knight but the truth is that it wasn't made to compete against the Dark Knight and if it was then thats like a soldier running towards his enemies with a live grenade(you know you're going to die). but its an awesome movie for the summer and just plain period. so go see this cause its a great film.

What rock have you been under Celluloid??? Hangover didn't live up to the hype? Are you serious? Its the funniest comedy this year and has earned $183 million. If you didn't like it, that's one thing, but don't make stupid comments like that. Get your facts straight. 80% of the critics has praised it as well. So... that means the critics and the public generally think YOU'RE WRONG.

unfortunately the transformers movie is to much fluff and no stuff. fans of the toyline and the original cartoons may feel insulted at how Bay has packaged this movie. I dont want to give any spoilers for those who have not seen the movie but this movie and the plot behind it do not do this brand justice. Maybe i expected something totally different but i as a diehard fan of the original transformers feel that Bay has taken to much liberty with the brand. but of course money talks and bullshit walks as long as people are willing to dish out money to see Bays version of the transformers we will have movies that will have little to do or nothing to do with what the original characters or story lines that they were supposed to be based on. As for me i would rather invest on the generation one transformers cartoons and reissued toylines to relive golden moments of the transformers brand.
