Box Office Beat Down: Sex Sells $55 Million Worth of Tickets

Source:  Box Office Mojo

Weekend Box Office

1)Sex and the City: The Movie $55.7 million

2)Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull $46 million

3)The Strangers $20.7 million

4)Iron Man $14 million

5)The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian $13 million

6)What Happens in Vegas $6.8 million

7)Baby Mama $2.2 million

8)Speed Racer $2.1 million

9)Made of Honor $2 million

10) Forgetting Sarah Marshall $1 million

Women ruled the box office this weekend, making the big screen adaptation of the beloved HBO series Sex and the City number one on the charts. The long awaited continuation of the raunchy sitcom netted a hearty $55.7 million, making it one of the biggest outings of the year thus far. But don't feel so bad for Indy. In his second weekend, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull made off with another $46 million. That puts its cumulative grosses at $216 million, making it the biggest film of this year.

This week's only other major contender was Universal's The Strangers. It came in third place with a healthy $20.7 million dollar take. Nipping on its heels with $14 million was Iron Man, which has raked in $276 million after five weeks on the chart.

The Will Ferrell produced comedy The Foot Fist Way managed to pull in $36,000 worth of ticket sales on a paltry four screens. Also making some headway on the arthouse circuit was Stuart Gordon's Stuck, which nabbed $10,200 on just two screens.

Next week, the women of Sex and the City will team up with Indiana Jones to take on the likes of Kung Fu Panda and Adam Sandler's You Don't Mess with the Zohan.

EVEN IF THIS IS INDY'S SECOND WEEK, I THOUGHT IT WOULD STILL GET BETTER MONEY THAN SEX AND THE CITY,
AND WHY THE HELL IS NARNIA NUMBER 4, I AM DAMN DISSAPOINTED, THOUGHT IT MIGHT GET MORE MONEY THAN THAT, I MEAN IT IS THE THIRD WEEK AND IT DIDN'T EVEN GET TO THE 150 MILL. DAMN!

The same reason for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull being in it's second week. It's even older than Indiana. I thought this was the battle of opening weekends though, that's what my last comment was all about. LOLZ!!!!!

it was indys 2nd week vamp. or 3rdi dont recall. it wasnt the battle of the openers. but it was obvious indy wouldnt last long. the fact that SandTC made the top 5 opening weekend is a sign of the end of days. sarah jessica parker is probably laying on her spoils counting her money with 2 cabana boys in her bomb shelter right now.

I went to see Sex and the City and it was way Funny and way Good. It was worth watching. For all you people (men) who haven't seen it, some of you guys might actually like it. Even Joshua Rich who reviews for the entertainment weekly site didn't want to admit it but he went to watch it and he really liked it and hopes it continues to do well and I agree. So sorry guys Sex and the City was definitely an excellent movie!

Must be an error.Must be a real fuckin error.
This shit beating Indie Johns. What the fuck. Now I know why the directors of Sex and the city keep coming up with more shit. Its because they are led by these wank-heads who buy tickets to mustarbate to old ladies in the movie houses(sorry MJParker).
This shit has got to stop, hollywood has gone to the dogs.Thanx Ed Wood.

I won a major vicotry this weekend. I actually talked my girlfriend into going to see Indy again instead of Sex and the City! Indy rocks! Though not the best in the series I still think it rocks its was pretty cool. Aliens, god, magic stones whatever. 'Depends on who your god is.' great line!

lol ringwraither.. you know, when it says 55.7 million, that doesnt mean how many people went to see it.. and if what you said were the case, movies would only be a dollar and damn what a world that would be.

I saw "The Strangers"...it was ok ...almost forgettable once the credits rolled & I walked out of the theater...It was a "cleaner" version of "Funny Games"..I would give "The Strangers" a C+..Wait for DVD...

I knew "Sex and the City" would be #1...I skipped it I willo wait for the $2.50 theater or even DVD!!!!

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" the hype wore off, I knew it wasn't going to be #1! The bad reception at Cannes, & the bad word of mouth didn't help! I have met people who "refuse" to see "Indy 4" because of the bad word of mouth!
I saw it 2xs...I would give "indy 4" about a B+!

Next weekend I want to see "Kung Fu Panda", no interest in "You Don't Mess with the Zohan"..the trailer has gotton old real fast..I will wait for DVD or cheap theater!

55 million women went to go see this piece of shit! Either that or half of that 55 mil are men with bad taste!! I expect Kung FU Panda to be #1 next week. Kids are out of school next week and the movie is going to cash-in. I dont know how The Zohan will do..it'll be interesting next weekend most definate.

many women with midlife crises went to see Sex and the City. I am kinda happy though that Indy still stood strong with 46 million. That sucks for your prediction AndrewR
