John from Cincinnati Cancelled!

Source:  The Hollywood Reporter
A day after airing its season finale, HBO has cancelled the surfing drama John from Cincinnati. According to The Hollywood Reporter, series creator David Milch will continue to work for the pay cable network.

Milch's deal with HBO will run through August of 2008. He is already in the process of creating several new series for the channel. John from Cincinnati, which got mixed reviews from the critics, never managed to find its audience.

At this time, HBO is trying to decide if it wants to renew the comedy series Flight of the Conchords for another season.

God forbid, we wouldn't want to have one drama on TV that actually worked the viewers' grey matter. I used to respect the hell out of HBO with the chances they took with their programming, but no more. Did it ever occur to any of these brilliant programming executives that a unique show of this sort would require more than one season for people to catch on and spread the word? Carnivale, Deadwood, JFC all to be canceled?! Looks like HBO has now joined the commercial networks in the dummying down of television and the ever-present race to the bottom. Hey HBO, here's an idea for a new fall series:

CSI-Lubbock

Good grief, what a disappointment! This was an intelligent, thought-provoking show.

Deadwood actually wasn't technically "cancelled." David Milch voluntarily ended the series when JFC was given the green light. JFC was supposedly his "dream series," so even though he promised/planned at least 5 seasons of Deadwood, when he was given the go-ahead for JFC, he dropped the already successful "sure thing" he'd created in order to take a risk. Serves him right, as far as I'm concerned. If he would have stuck with Deadwood, he'd have satisfied a lot of fans *and* been able to do JFC when Deadwood was through.

When I first began to watch John from Cincinnati, I couldn't decide if I kept coming bak each week for more glimpses of a train wreck, or if I actually liked it. But by half way through, I realized "I do do like the show!" A friend who is a fellow fan and I would catch ourselves using lines from the show and would discuss each week for at least an hour. I would look forward to its time so that I could see what would next await our characters (except for the only unlikeable one, Cissy). Critics called the show strange and weird, I call it SCHEHERAZADIAN (strangely fabulous).

There was no deeper meaning- no Kafkaesque allure. Milch fell into the same trappings as the earlier failed HBO endevour, CARNIVAL. The intrigue of watching a cast of sideshow freaks can last so long until it becomes obvious the viewer knows nothing about any of the characters and has been hoodwinked by a superficial spectacle that consists of weekly doses of questions being raised and teased with false revelations. The "no exit" writing strategy is the same issue that left most ex- LOST fans feeling cheated. Perhaps, most viewers didn't want to invest in the show because they realized that the appeal was based on the questions being left unanswered. I am tired of supposed fans of the show inability to articulate what they find so appealling about the show and soley base the show's merit on its ambiguous plot.

This sucks, but the rest of the comments do even more. None of you will stop watching HBO or cancel subscriptions. Why? Its the best network in cable tv. HBO knows this and they're gonna keep trying new shows until they find another big hit. All of us HBO watchers should understand this by now. If you like a show, tell people about it, if it gets cancelled, buy the dvd. It may just get them thinking it had a real audience and they might even consider bringing it back.

WTF, HBO why do you give us so much then rip it away? We actually pay $$$ for you. Ratings should not be your agenda! Bring back JFC! NOW!

It was a sad day today when I heard of this cancellation. "Deadwood", loved it! Cancelled! "Rome", loved it! Cancelled! Everyshow can't be "Six Feet Under". I understand ratings, money, etc. but how many times does HBO think they can start a series, get some group of people interested, cancel it, and then expect these same people come back for more? I guess those of us who represent the fan base of these shows is too small to worry about. Milch... Move to FX or Showtime.

Every time I get into a show they cancel it yet they let the sopranos go through to a horrible end. They cancel carnivale, deadwood, and now john from cincinnati. I'm hating hbo now. What is the point of getting into one of their shows only to cancel it? It's making me insane. When a show gets too cerebral for people hbo cuts and runs. It's crap.

HBO is getting too networkish. Milch should take his genius to a non commercial network for a change. John From Cincinnati is a "thinking man's" show. So of course HBO cancels it. They canceled Deadwood too, which goes to that same argument. AND, For goodness sake, KEEP THE FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS, do something right! Re-new for season 2 please!!

I stuck with this maddening show through the whole season. At the end, I'm mostly just disappointed that we were deprived of seeing Deadwood completed properly (with a fourth season) for this aimless show.

The genius of Deadwood was that it confined Milch's creativity to a historical period and historical characters. "John" was Milch run amok, and was in my opinion inferior for it.

While the show had moments of brilliance (the end of episode 2 comes to mind) the characters just had too little to do. We'll never know now what Milch was setting up.

Wow. Dumb dumb dumb dumb. What a great show and what a boneheaded move on HBO's part if it's true. Too bad none of the many questions it posed will be answered now. Let's hope this is BS. Save John, for Cincinnati's sake!

I'm bummed. I started watching the show because of it being on before entourage and the fact that I could tune into it on HBO On Demand. I had just about lost interest in the show until episode 5 blew my mind and I got hooked. It sucks that HBO will put a story out there, lets their paying audience get into it then what? Sheesh at least put all the main characters into a diner with a Journey song on and cut to black screen... Weak.

What the fuck is wrong with the people that run HBO? They cancel a perfectly good, fan supported show like DEADWOOD for this crap, then they cancel this show with a very swift turnaround since the premiere. Milch, I feel for you pal, HBO is sucking balls right now scrambling for a new hit, but come on man.....FIGHT FOR DEADWOOD. It's the best thing you've ever had going.

HBO. Your channel is going down...and the reason is simple. You dont listen to what the fans want. Go check your forums out for godsake.
