Mel Gibson has been set to star in the whimsical drama
The Beaver, co-starring Jodie Foster, who is also set to direct from a script by Kyle Killen.
According to
Variety, Gibson will play a depressed man who finds solace in wearing a beaver hand-puppet. Foster will play the role of the man's wife.
Foster boarded the project and brought it to Gibson, with whom she co-starred in 1994's
Maverick.
Anonymous Content's Steve Golin and Keith Redmon will produce the film.
The project had several star and director combos circling -- including Steve Carell and Jay Roach -- over the past several months.
Producers are pushing for a September start date in New York.

Mel Gibson needs to focus on getting back to his younger days, no drama, but action and adventure.
Foster is an old friend of his, she's been hoping to join him in other films.
To true Newkill, bring Mel back to his roots. Although, I'd rather him direct another a film.
