EXCLUSIVE: Frank Spotnitz Wants to Bring Back the Aliens in The X-Files 3!

Source:  Brian Gallagher
The X-Files 3 from Frank SpotnitzI just got off the phone with writer-producer Frank Spotnitz, who was promoting the upcoming X-Files: I Want to Believe, which comes out on DVD and Blu-ray on December 2. I also had to ask him about the possibility of a third film in this popular series. Here's what he had to say about what would likely be the last film in the series.

So, there have already been whisperings about a third film from Fox. Is there anything you can tell us about that?

Frank Spotnitz: Well, yeah. I think we'd all like to to it. The studio has not said yes or no. I think the box office, unfortunately, we got creamed in the theaters by The Dark Knight. I don't think anybody could've anticipated that was going to be such a huge, historic phenomenon. To be a dark scary movie coming out the week after The Dark Knight was not the best timing. I think there's life in the franchise still. I think these are great characters. There's a date that looms very important in X-Files mythology, which is December 2012. I think after the DVD comes out, the studio will decide whether they want to roll the dice on another X-Files feature.

Are you and Chris (Carter) already hatching up ideas for that?

Frank Spotnitz: Yeah. I mean, if we were to make one more feature, I think we would definitely have to deal with alien colonization. I honestly think that's the movie that most non-hardcore X-Files fans, as well as a lot of hardcore X-Files fans are dying to see. Obviously, I think Chris has had ideas about that from the very beginning when he dreamt up this show, 16 years ago.

So do you think if this goes through, it will be the definite, final closure film? The end of the whole series?

Frank Spotnitz: I would think so. It certainly would be designed to be the period on the sentence.

You can read my full interview with Spotnitz in the near future, as we get closer to X-Files: I Want to Believe's December 2 release date.

Rob Bowman should come back and do XF3, he was so great as the director for "Fight The Future." Glen Morgan would be good too, but Rob Bowman did the majority of Mythology episodes, that's why they picked him for XF1. And that's why he should do the Mythology Closure film. It's great that Chris Carter wanted to take the seat for the Mulder/Scully Closure film, but there is still that lingering Mythology thread that will happen in December 2012 and we know Mulder will play a big part, and Scully will be convinced to follow him. So XF3 needs to be THE LAST X-FILES and Rob Bowman deserves the driver's seat.

CBF out.

I watched the whole nine season X-Files. Usually, I'm not the mythology supporter. I'm more after standalone storyline, but strangely, I like Fight the Future. FTF has done its silver screen job, even now I watch it I still think it's good. Sadly I Want to Believe shatters my anticipation for the sequel. Personally I don't find it any scary, dark maybe, but definitely not frightening. They keep blaming Dark Knight for box office, but I think Batman is not the only reason to blame. It's like they write a not-so-good script and bring it to the big screen as quick as possible. If you're a moviegoer you can tell where's the plot hole. The movie is without explosion, that's fine, many good films are too. The problem is they focus on the relationship too much. Although it may pleasure shippers, but what about non-shippers? Or people who just want to watch a great sci-fi adventure movie? I always appreciate X-Files storytelling and the neutral viewpoint. The most important thing is, they can make you think. IWTB just loses the magic. This time they give us the Sunday-school truth + a little romance. Is it because the budget is tight? The production time is too short? I don't know. I thought this stand-alone story could be so much better than this "don't give up" surmon. If there's another chance, I want to see them writing another stand-alone story focus on story itself instead of exploring relationship, but I guess there's no hope for another stand-alone. I would like to see the third film, for giving us an ending, also make up for this one. And, maybe Carter should consider to give director seat to another person. He's not doing the bad job, but compare to other X-Files director, they can do better.

Yeah, good idea. It would be a shame to not know what happens with that in the end.

I started watching this series from day one, but was appalled by the last film. Wasn't even really like you were watching the X-Files at all for the most part. I thought it was great that the film was taking a new direction, but if that's the best they can do, then bring back the aliens. Still, I've not completely lost faith after this blip, and will eagerly anticipate another film.

I think the standalone could have worked well, but honestly this last movie, wasn't scary in the slightest. Basically, the direction they took, and the story they chose, it ended up being not even as good as the worst X-Files episode. That said, I'll STILL be first in line to see another flick. Just get Chris Carter out of the director's chair. The man doesn't have what it takes anymore.

Loved the show and the first movie. Havent seen the second flick yet but my thoughts are that the majority of the fans like the: aliens/conspiracy/Mulder's sister/alien bounty hunter/colonization story arcs better than the stand alone episodes and those are the stories that are gonna put asses in theater seats.

Alien colonization...perfect period indeed.

That's why Part 3, Cell. That's what X-Files fans have been waiting for, not that you ever read or respond to comments that people make about you, unless you enjoy them, you sick, sadistic, masochist you.

I Want to Believe wasn't bad. If anything, it was a long, big screen episode.

WHY A PART 3..????!????!? "X-Files: I Want to Believe" was a dud....100% forgettable once I left the theater and the credits roll....

"X-Files 2" never lived up to it's hype!

Im not a big fan of the X-files, but after I want to Believe, i think they should make another one just to make up for it.

That will definitely be the ideal, final chapter of The X-Files. I Want to Believe was great for fans of Mulder & Scully, and their relationship as far as what fans always wanted to see from them, but was never shown on-screen, but XF3 would be the ultimate closure.

So before they said that they would wait to see the box office results, and at least Spotnitz admits that it was dumb to go up against TDK, but now they want to wait to see how DVD sales will be on XF2 - to decide whether or not to make XF3!!?! Just make up your mind already, Fox.

We know everyone except one certain redhead will be on board for it. One can only hope Gillian Anderson will not have a problem with returning to the role that made her what she is today, one final time.

My fingers are crossed.

i loved this movie. it had zero explosions in it and almost no one carried a gun. it was a thinking persons thriller and a beautiful exploration of faith and religion . that said - being a character study - the summer was not the best time to release this movie - people want blood, gore, explosions etc. oh well - i'm ordering my dvd right now.

I agree, ticket prices are absurd as are the prices for popcorn and drinks. That is why I usually wait and buy the DVD, more cost effective. I love The X-Files and miss the weekly series so I would love a third movie.

What a poor excuse blaming THE DARK KNIGHT for their box office failure. It didn't even debut #2 on the list. But I'm a fan of the series and i wouldn't mind seeing a third, although the second movie sucked just as bad as the first one did, and that's saying a lot.

It would be a very smart move. I'm tired of spending a lot money to see these movies and end up very disappointed. Damn ticket prices are ridiculous.

Nice. Yeah, if they even have the chance to do a 3rd film, they should definitely bring back the aliens.
