Friday the 13th DVD Launch Party

We take in a DVD launch party where we were shown an awesome three-part special feature on the three new Deluxe Editions

Back in February, to coincide with the theatrical release of the with the release of the Friday the 13th remake, brand new Deluxe Edition's of the original Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th, Part 2 and Friday the 13th, Part 3 3-D were released on DVD. Now that the remake is out on DVD, Killer Cut Extended Edition DVD and Blu-ray starting today, June 16, Paramount Home Entertainment has also released the next wave of Deluxe Editions with Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Friday the 13th, Part V: A New Beginning and Friday the 13th, Part VI: Jason Lives available today as well.

Last night I ventured down the road into West Hollywood for a slick little DVD launch party for the three new Deluxe Editions, and we got a little sneak peek into one of the brand new special features that is spread out over all three new discs. DVD producer Dan Farrands hosted the party and we were treated to his three-part special feature, The Crystal Lake Massacres Revisited, a mockumentary set in the actual world inhabited in the film: Camp Crystal Lake, and, as if these Deluxe Edition's weren't already must-own discs for fans of the series, this hilarious new mockumentary gives the most die-hard fans of this slasher series some awesome comic relief.

Farrands wrote, produced and directed this mockumentary, which runs nearly an hour in length altogether, and each part begins with a disclaimer that this is a "true story," setting it up like a news documentary, and Farrands told us before the screening that this was set up as if these events in the movie did actually take place. This mock film gives us a lot of hilarious material here - fake news reports, newspaper clippings and interviews from residents of Crystal Lake and experts and conspiracy theorists on what really happened. I must say that this entire series is quite hilarious, with a lot of awesome pokes and prods at the logistics of the entire series... or lack thereof. This mockumentary even starts out with a Crystal Lake historian who even claims that Crystal Lake's neighboring town was Haddonfield, the fictional town that Michael Myers tore up in the Halloween film series. We hear from a number of the town's residents, the local cop and, in probably the best material of the series, an expert who wrote a book that "debunks" the myth of Jason, insisting all the Crystal Lake murders were done by copycat killers, and two fanatical conspiracy theorists who insist that, well, Jason can do all this stuff he does in the movies and he's still alive, and such. We also hear from a doctor who discusses Jason's birth defects and such, and also the feasibility of, well, Jason's ability to survive everything that he has, and many more fake characters like some of the town's more dimwitted residents, someone who was institutionalized with the series' Tommy Jarvis and many more colorful characters that bring hilarious insight into this film series.

This whole series is rather awesome and even if you aren't the biggest horror fan in the world, there is plenty to enjoy here and plenty more if you're a hardcore horror geek. As hilarious as it is, it's also very well-researched and thorough and makes for an amazing addition to these new Deluxe Editions, which will make great additions to your DVD collection.

These discs also feature other bonus goodies like, on Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, new fan commentaries from horror director's Adam Green (Hatchet) and Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2: Dead End) and a featurette on Crispin Glover's "Dead Dance Moves" as Jimmy. On all three discs there is also another installment of the Lost Tales From Camp Blood series that started on the first wave of Deluxe Editions, and a whole lot more.

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Friday the 13th, Part V: A New Beginning and Friday the 13th, Part VI: Jason Lives all are available on DVD today, and make sure to check for my reviews of all three of these discs in the coming days. Peace in. Gallagher out!
