Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins Gets a PG-13 Rating

Source:  Variety
As production starts today on Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, the next installment in the action franchise, producers at the Halcyon Co. say they aim to deliver a PG-13 movie to Warner Bros. for release on May 22, 2009, according to Variety.

The Terminator series is one of the highest-grossing R-rated franchises of all time, with the first three films having grossed more than $1.03 billion worldwide. But Halcyon producers thought it was time to broaden the upcoming fourth film's audience base, and they believe the PG-13 won't compromise the series' gritty vision.

"The ratings have changed," said Halcyon co-founder and co-CEO Victor Kubicek, a broker-turned-writer-producer. "The PG-13 has increased in intensity."

The move follows last year's Die Hard film, Live Free or Die Hard, which went out with a PG-13 after three prior R-rated installments. That pic went on to gross $382.1 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing in the series.

A family-friendly rating opens many doors, including a "Terminator Salvation" licensing deal for action figures with Playmates Toys.

"Our merchandising program will be the largest to date for 'The Terminator,' " said Halcyon co-founder and co-CEO Derek Anderson, ex-owner of ad agency In the Mix, who adds that he had not discussed the possibility of an R-rating with Warners. "We won't force it. We are carrying on in the tradition of the mythology, with an exciting approach to the action. If we can make a compelling film to reach the widest audience, why wouldn't we do it?"

Halcyon has already launched Halcyon Games to create a "Terminator" game for release at the same time as the movie. "The first three games were all bad," Anderson said. "The core fans are screaming for something fresh; they won't be just playing the movie."

Set in post-apocalyptic 2029, an adult John Connor, played by Christian Bale, leads the war to save humanity from the killing machines.

Signing Bale, who also stars in the current Batman series, was a huge coup. Sam Worthington, who fronts franchise creator James Cameron's upcoming Avatar, also stars. The Terminator role is still under wraps; speculation centers on Josh Brolin.

Well Gui.a.j, more people will get to see this at the cinema with this rating, but they'll just be watching a watered-down version of what was once a great franchise. Was looking forward to this before I realised the terminators will probably be firing water pistols!

still A PG 13 Movie will be better cause more people could have the choice to see it but that means that there is lower violence in the movie and those thing that are a R rated category.

Frank2029 I'm only ranting and raving how upset I am about this because Im not a true terminator fan. Yeah, that makes alot of sense. If I didnt care or wasn't a true Terminator fan I wouldn't say anything and just be one of those who thinks no matter what they do is golden because its called terminator.

This is TERRIBLE news! And they still haven't changed that awful title!?

Anyways I think as long as it has Bale and Brolin, it should live up to the expectations.

God...why cant they just make it T4

May 5th, 2008 4:40pm
Fuck off Frank2029, we want the best possible movie for our money. An R rating makes it that much more posssible for a kick ass film. This decision makes it apparent they are in it for the money and nothing more. The PG13 rating along with McG directing, this isnt looking too promising. The only good thing we have heard is Christian Bale is starring in it.

morons, if you guys were real terminator fans like you say you are, then you would see this movie regardless of the rating, what are you guys 4? u can afford to see a movie if it blows...

May 5th, 2008 3:14pm
Nobody go see this please. Dont support this type of mentality. The movie industry has gone so far down the toilet that it is tainting blockbuster rated R movies.

May 5th, 2008 3:12pm
I am still so pissed off right now! I dont want to hear their bullshit reason why T4 is PG-13 and how it doesn't lose any intensity. Thats such contradicting bullcrap to say. "The ratings have changed," said Halcyon co-founder and co-CEO Victor Kubicek, a broker-turned-writer-producer. "The PG-13 has increased in intensity." That statement is completly contradicting you stupid sob! If that was the case then shouldn't it be R so kids dont see this. Doesnt that kinda just ruin the whole point out of having the ratings system. Oh, i just threw up.

I am going to ignore everything they put out now and only remember the first two actual terminator movies that James Cameron did. T3 was ok, but now this. WTF! I hate fing hollywood. Way to ruin it you dumb shits!
