With an amazing critical reception at its back, the humans and non-humans of
District 9 ran roughshod over its box office competitors this week, taking in an estimated $37 million in its first weekend of release. Director Neill Blomkamp's $30 million film debut has already made its budget back in the first three days and it will be interesting to see if the film drops off much in its second weekend, with such great word-of-mouth and critical praise.
Last weekend's big winner had a pretty big drop-off in its second week in theaters.
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra took second place with an estimated $22.5 million, a 58.9% drop from last weekend's $56.2 million take.
The Time Traveler's Wife, the film adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger's best-selling book, did solid biz in third place with $19.2 million, but the rest of the newcomers this week didn't fare that well at all.
The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard came in sixth place with $5.3 million, but this R-rated comedy was only given a modest rollout of 1,838 theaters. The lauded animator Hayao Miyazaki's new film
Ponyo took ninth place with just $3.5 million, although it was only screening in 927 theaters. Both films still managed to outdo the teeny-bopper flick
Bandslam, which took 13th place with $2.2 million from 2,121 theaters for a dismal per-screen average of $1,061. A new documentary made some noise in limited release, though, with
It Might Get Loud taking in $101,000 from just 7 theaters, for an impressive $14,429 per-screen average.
Next week brings us Quentin Tarantino's World War II masterpiece
Inglourious Basterds along with Robert Rodriguez's kids film
Shorts and Alexis Bleidel's
Post Grad in wide release. Be sure to stop by next week to see how
District 9 fares against this diverse competition.

It wasn't a masterpiece, but it was different, which is probably why it got so much praise. They even kind of added a bit of geekness into it by have that Mech looking machine lol. The only downsides in that film are that the main character swore out the same phrases "bloody fucking whatever" which was kind of annoying and I don't know if anybody else noticed that but I was like "he's not very creative with his words" haha. But anyway, the other was the inevitable cliche' "going back to save the friend alien" which is fine cause we all wanted him to, but it was kinda cliche' in that way. But oh well, overall it was entertaining and intense for a while.
Maybe I should have given D9 a fair chance. The documentary stylized footage, the cat food, my friends sarcastic comments and constant complaining; all to much...
As a film it excelled: original concept, unique direction, and critic backing. As a Saturday night blockbuster to just chillax and enjoy, not so much.
I'll go again sometime with a much more open mind....
But the general consensus, as of now is just "boo-hoo Mr. Jackson...." Hopefully, that'll change. ;)
"kingbrady, if that was in the trailer than it must have been a quick shot which you could only see by pausing it so that was a spoiler you just gave." - Newkill
I understand that it is a spoiler that was put into the trailer (which you didn't have to pause it to see it-that part was about 10 seconds long) so I don't know how you didn't see it. But how you stated in your first comment, you made it seem like it was kingbrady's fault which it really wasn't (it was the studio or whoever edited the trailer which we are on the same page about now). Like you kinda blamed kingbrady in the first comment then changed it to blaming the studio for the spoiler in the following comments. But yeah anyway not a big deal I just want to clear this up haha.
Fallen, is that guy you work with a meathead or something? Only watches sport films? lol.

It's not that big of a deal I was just helping out, clarifying the whole argument (and Vis I think even chimed in and told us that he saw it too) so it's not I'm making things up here lol. But I do appreciate you being a lot cooler and more civilized conversations to the users lately duder :) Granted, you will be attacked occasionally but I've seen you hold out which is actually healthier for you to do. I only attack people who are hypocrites, unhonest, unfair, and good ol' fashion assholes. They actually have to do those things for me to say anything or get a rise out of me.
Perfect Getaway.....nice twist, Funny People kinda long but was a mix of love, sadness and humour.........GI Joe dropping 60% well duhhh that isnt surprising, they took in a strong $22 mill
Again, D-9 was mind numbing action with an actually good story. I am surprised you walked out Zany..
"Orphan" & "A Perfect Getaway" ...at least both of these films were scary and they both had a "Shhhhh! Don't give the ending away"...!!!
& I loved "The Hurt Locker"!! Damn Good film!
I saw: "Sixteen Candles" & "The Breakfast Club" on the big screen!
I can't wait to see: "Inglourious Basterds"!!
It's to bad it dropped off the list...
I'm satisfied knowing my nine dollars was not part of its box office revenue...
