Will Smith stepped it up and reclaimed his 4th of July weekend by bringing in $66 million with the superhero epic
Hancock. This is his highest grossing holiday weekend ever, as well as the third highest grossing 4th of July film of all time. Since opening on Tuesday, the Peter Berg directed
Hancock has pulled in an estimated $107 million, quick kicking it into blockbuster status simply on Smith's star power alone.
Coming in at second place was the Disney/Pixar animated sci-fi comedy adventure
Wall-E. The film, directed by
Finding Nemo's Andrew Stanton, drew in close to $33 million during its second week of release. So far, the film has earned an estimated $128 million.
Wanted, also in its second week of release, continued to amaze audiences, pulling in another $20.6 million. So far, it has earned an accumulated gross of $90.7 million, making it one of the bigger surprises of the summer so far.
On the independent front, Jonathan Levine's second directorial effort
The Wackness opened on 6 screens, pulling in $145,000. This gave it a per screen average of $24,166, besting
Hancock, whose per screen average was locked at $16,645. Also in limited release was the Hunter S. Thomson documentary
Gonzo. It pulled in $190,000 on 26 screens across the country.
Will
Hancock be able to survive in the number one spot yet again next week? It's highly doubtful as word of mouth has been poor. And the fact that another highly anticipated comic book adaptation by the name of
Hellboy II: The Golden Army is debuting doesn't help matters either. Also opening against it are Brendan Fraser's
Journey to the Center of the Earth and Eddie Murphy in Eddie Murphy in
Meet Dave (that's not a typo!). It should be a fun three-way battle, and I bet ol' Big Red comes out on top.

1.Hellboy 2
2.Journey to the Center of the Earth
3.Hancock
4.Wall-E
5.Meet Dave
I really hope Meet Dave takes in less than 20 mil because Murphy hasnt done one good comedy since the first Nutty Professor. He's suffering from Chevy Chase syndrome!
THINK ABOUT IT: This is the kind of buzz that Pirates 2, Shrek 2, and Spiderman 2 all had. And all 3 of those movies are in the all-time top 10 grossing films. (Pirates 2 - 423 million, Shrek 2 - 437 million, and Spiderman 2 - 373 million). Judging by the fact that Indy 4 will peak around 325 million... I REALLY feel Dark Knight will surpass that.
Besides Moviemaniack1993... were'nt you the one saying that Wanted would place 3rd or 4th its opening weekend cause it was crap while many others (including me) flat out said it would be #2? Who was right there? Well... with all due respect.. Dark Knight WILL be #1 at the end of the summer. Bank on it.
Issue 1056 stated:
"PREPARE TO BE WOWED"
Christian Bale and the late Heath Ledger lift Batman to a shocking new level witha jolt of dark magic.
They give "The Dark Knight" 3 1/2 stars!
The opening Review states:
HEADS UP: A thundebolt is about to rip into the blanket of bland we call summer movies!
So far the reviews are good!
And cell... you're right about never counting out the fan base. Batman has fans that our young, middle aged, AND old. Batman is Batman. And i guarantee that if this movie is as good as all the hype (which i've heard it is from pre-screening), many die hard fans are going to see this movie multiple times... boosting its chances to surpass Indy.
Don't get me wrong. I love the Indiana Jones character and I really liked Iron Man... I just have to disagree with Moviemaniack1993 about Batman failing to be #1 for the year. But I still respect his opinion because of his very thorough and rational analysis.
Heath WAS an up and coming actor....before his passing he had 18 films to his credit...19 counting " Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus"!
& what is W/."The senior citizens who contributed to Indy's success"...statement..??
There are certain films W./a huge fan base! "Inday", "Star Trek" & "Batman" are some examples! So never count out the fans! They can make or break a film!
"Dark Knight" will surly cross the 100 million mark, & I'm almost sure that it will follow right behind "Iron Man" & "Indy 4" to cross the $300-Million Mark!
But of course "Iron Man" was the first film To Cross $300-Million Mark!
& there was also "Horton Hears a Who!" which crossed the $100 million mark this year as well!
and according to Variety "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" as already topped the $300 million mark at the domestic box office as of 06/30/2008!
"Crystal Skull" is only the second film of 2008 to reach $300 million after "Iron Man."
AGREE with: the fact that the Dark Knight is being released rather late in the summer. All other Batman movies have been released in June. Also, the most ANY Batman movie has grossed is Tim Burton's version in 1989 with 251 million (Batman Begins couldn't even surpass it with 205 million), so being #1 movie of the year may be far fetched. HOWEVER...
DISAGREE with: you are wrong about Heath Leadger only known by the teenage and young adult crowd. I'm 43 years old and many of my friends my age agree that this guy was a talent lost. The guy IS known throughout many age groups. THE DARK KNIGHT will be the biggest grossing film of the year with about 340 to 350 million. It is the biggest anticipated film since the first Batman of '89. It will easily surpass it and will just squeak by Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skulls. ALTHOUGH...
NOT SURE OF: can't say it will surpass Spidey 3's first weekend total of 151 million. I'm a little skeptical about that.... BUT IF IT DOES... it IS guaranteed to the #1 movie of the summer.
...and I believe it will cross the "Over" the $100 million mark...the biggest factor of the film is to see Heath Ledger's "Last" performance!
I went to see the film "Mongol" instead! ("Mongol" is the story that recounts the early life of Genghis Khan!)
Can't wait to see "Journey to the Center of the Earth"!!! Wish it opened over the weekend in addition to ""Hancock"!
