Philip Seymour Hoffman Responds to Those Pesky The Dark Knight Penguin Rumors

Source:  The Stone Report
Movie PictureThe Stone Report has just gotten word from Philip Seymour Hoffman that he hasn't been officially cast in the potential upcoming The Dark Knight sequel, nor has he even been offered the role. Rumor has the acclaimed actor playing The Penguin in the next Batman film. While at the Toronto International Film Festival, Hoffman spoke about the rumor for the first time, and didn't completely rule out his participation.

Hoffman stated, "Some friend of mine told me he read that. First I heard of it." Phillip said that no one from Warner Brothers has given him a call as of yet, continuing with, "I grew up a comic book fan, so I love that stuff. I love going to that stuff. I think what they're doing with that whole Batman story is really true to what that whole Batman thing has always been. It's one of the darkest origins of a superhero, to get all nerdy and geeky on you. That character sees his parents gunned down as a young child: I remember when I was a kid reading that story, so seeing it now come to life as the dark tale that it really is as an intense, really dark, very visceral, adult tale that they're doing now, all the great work people are doing on it, of course I wouldn't say, 'Well, no, no no.' But I don't know the reality of it, so I wouldn't say 'yes' to you."

So, there you go folks. Philip Seymour Hoffman hasn't been offered the role as of yet. But he hasn't ruled out taking the role if it is offered to him. Take that for what you will.

Hey idiot, you're not going to climb the activity list by repeating the same comment everywhere. On another note, I don't think that I want to see The Penguin in a film, though.

rumor shumor. he will be cast i guarantee that. and as for depp, he is the only one who could potentially outdo ledger. i know i have said it before, but its the truth. ledger was astounding, we all know this. but depp as the riddler could even be more epic. i really hope he gets offered the role and takes it without a 2nd thought. hoffman and depp both

he would need to gain a lot of weight i think. but the main cast member we should be worrying about is if chris nolan will come back. they cant make another batman without him. i hope this doesn't turn out the way tim burton's batman did. he directed the first two and some dumbass directed the next one.oh I'm gonna pray on that.lol!!

I'd prefer the Riddler to the Penguin. I still think it would have been cool to have the Riddler in the second movie, and to save Joker for the third (although The Dark Knight was great). Somehow, in the second movie, I always invisioned the Riddler being a pawn of the Joker's. They are similar in many aspects, so I always imagined that Joker was pulling Riddler's strings. I have this image in my head of the final scene, in some dark wharehouse, of Riddler's defeat. A lonely figure slowly slinks from the shadows as the Batman leaves, bringing the Riddler to Arkham. You see a hue of purple on the clothes, a flash of a big red smile, all you here is, "Riddle me this riddle me that," and than that insane Joker laugh echos... movie over.

But, obviously I was wrong, and The Dark Knight was incredible as is. I still would prefer the Riddler to the Penguin, but if they did cast the character, Phillip would be an excellent choise.

they could try with mr szasz(how do you spell it?). he did not have enough sceenes on "begins",and he barely touched a victim,or a knife. i bet the one he had when he escaped arkham was only a blunt stub,

Yeah it is my opinion Vampire2000! Just like you vented your (im guessing - Goth!) opinion. Not everything dark and disturbing is clever or original - just keep that in mind.

To be honest I don't give a shit who will be who, all I care is Chis Nolan to return, because this flick could easliy ruin in the hands of some duchebag director.

i rather see penguin than riddler cause riddler is to much like joker. but if nolan makes it i have faith in it as well as what he will do as joker. i rather have depp play the joker in a scene or two much like scarecrow did, thats if they put him in the movie i hope they do or else they would be earasing him. have kate bekinsale play catwomen. you have the best cast ever!

well i see hoffman being perfect for the role of the penguin da vito did great as well but i think in batman returns catwoman stole the spotlight from the penguin thats why i think its better that superhero movies only have one villian at a time more room for a bigger plot

Hoffman would make a great penguin, i can actually see him making the penguin dark. As long as Chris keeps batman 3 as dark as the second then we are set.

I don't care who plays him as long as the actor is capable, I'm just curious to see Nolan's impression of the penguin. A fucked up version of batman who adopts the guise of a bird instead of a bat? Who knows?

Bob should play him I brought that up so long ago ,I'm glad people agree!

Well wizdome, that's your opinion, and I respect it(I sound like a douche saying it, but it helps me not to fly off the handle when people say stuff like that, lolz). Mine is that DeVito did awesome. That's the truth as I see it.

Diaigma, Hoskins was just in the movie Doomsday. I think that's his most recent that I know of.

I love Bob Hoskins. Where's he been?

Danny De Vito's performance could easily be topped!! That version of The Penguin was so far removed from the original sources that it was annoying as a Batman fan/reader like myself to watch. Philip or Bob.H. could easily outdo De Vito's performance and both actors are equally capable as they have both made great films in the past.

That's fair Diaigma, but to me, Hoffman just does not even look like the Penguin. My choice for Penguin has always been, and will always be Bob Hoskins. For me, it's either him, or let DeVito's performance sit in all of it's awesomeness. I mean I'm sure whoever Nolan picks will do wonderfully, and I'll definitely see it. He's just the last pick on my list.

No nose???

I'm assuming you've read batman comics or other batman material, fallen. He's always had the nose. It would be like Joker without green hair. Agreed with the penguins living with him though. That can do without.

Not that it matters right now anyway, but Phil looks the part. Just imagine him with a top hat and "the nose" in that picture. Now I can't wait or some official word.

Vamp, don't forget people said no one could top Jack Nick's Joker...how wrong were we?

No nose, no penguins livin with him. Just deformed, and as a child the only people that could stand him were the birds cuz he was abused as a child. Then in a metaphor he always liked the penguins cuz their able to live in two world, like he can be a crime boss, and a good man to kids who are challenged. He can be dark, ut kids, that are challenged is his sore spot in a way. I can totally see Hoffman doin that. Hope he gets it if it does happen.

If hoffman hasn't been offered the role, it's likely depp hasn't been offered the riddler, either. It's all media and fan speculation. I doubt nolan and crew have even discussed what villains they'll use, let alone talk to people. Nolan's on vacation and never thinks about a sequel until after the film he's working on is done. It's prolly safe to say he's thinking about what villain(s) on his vacation lol

he does looks the part
great choice for a villain
all he needs is the nose
