Warner Bros. to Make I Am Legend Prequel

Source:  Variety
Warner Bros. is developing a prequel to the Will Smith toplined I Am Legend.

According to Variety, the plan is for Smith to reprise his role as scientist Robert Neville, with Francis Lawrence returning to direct.

The studio has set D.B. Weiss to write a script that is based on a detailed outline that was hatched over the past few months. The prequel will chronicle the final days of humanity in New York before a man-made virus caused a plague that left Smith’s character the lone survivor among a mutated mob in the city.

Making a prequel was the only way to extend a franchise that grossed $584 million worldwide for Warner Bros. and keep Smith in the lead role. His character was killed in the first film, after extracting a potential cure for the virus for the scattered survivors.

No production date has been set.

I agree with Phat. If you couldn't tell that they were Vampires, or at least a new breed of Vampires, then you're a rather daft person, aren't you?

SS4VEGETA, shut up. That is the dumb, you know why? IT'S FUCKIN CALLED AN ALTERNATE ENDING!!! JACKASS! It wasn't in theaters, you could only see it if you bought the DVD. You can't make a sequel to something many people didn't see. A sequel is retarded first you see him blow up, then next he is working on the cure AGAIN!!!

then you clealy are dumb, it explained everything very well in the flashbacks Smith had.

this is actually a good idea, there is massive potential to make a great big action movie. although, we have sorta seen the viral outbreak thing before. but only this yime, we got the Fresh Prince!

I would love to see a prequal to the movie, because i didn't even understand the whole concept of the man-made virus thing. None of it made sense to me.

Yes, and instead of a prequel how bout a sequel. If evrybody saw the alternate ending he didnt die wich means hi still has time to perfect his antidote.

Fountain, they showed enough flashbacks in "I Am Legend" to know what caused it. As I said before show the audience the people in the origin before becoming the Alpha Male and Alpha Female, and the transformation. And if Robert Neville thought this would happen in the year 2009, it would be a good release for next year but im pushing it. As long as Francis Lawrence and WIll Smith come back, I will definitely see this. "I Am Legend" is classic to me. In my opinion its a one movie thing and it should stay that way, but people can't leave it alone. In that case "Hellblazer", the sequel to "Constantine"...

yep yep, I like that, you go and do it warner bros, you go and do it + who didn't like this movie, and who is able to forget it, apperently not me, because it is stuck in my head that it is supposed to be one of the favorites on my profile even though it's not.
+ I am one of the people that would like to know what happened at first, so yeah a prequel would be incredible.

No. This is lame. I mean, that would ruin everything. They had enough flashbacks in I am Legend, and it was great!! There is barely any room for improvement, and we know everyone dies, and such. There could be other survivor stories, but I don't see this making it.
-- Damn you Hollywood!!

This sounds like a direct dvd thing. I Am Legend was a great movie, I dont think Will Smith could have done better. A prequel will only do well if released theatrically and Will Smith and Francis lAwrence definitely come back. The flashback thing wasn't a smart move to do a prequel. If they get in to the whole reason why the experiment turned deadly would be great. Then show the Alpha Male (Dash Mihok) was originally and The Alpha Female... Then show Robert's reaction when his wife and daughter died, then the film ends where "I AM Legend" takes place when he is chasing deer.

Okay most of u guys make a pretty good point. The movie was a good no doubt about that and imo a prequel really isnt needed BUT it wouldnt be a bad idea.

A prequel wouldn't be bad too see.

TXCANY, just because we didn't see the zombies befor the end of the movie doesn't mean they weren't around befor. Neville still had to manage to get away from everything and survive.

"This is going to be brilliant" ??? The cure to cancer would be brilliant. :) How exciting could a prequel possibly be when the zombies don't even appear until after the virus is released. So what are we going to see? Where the animals came from? Studios are so stupid.
