The Dark Knight Heads Back to IMAX This Weekend

Source:  IMAX
IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that the box office smash hit The Dark Knight, which has grossed more than $997 million at the worldwide box office since its release on July 18th, 2008, will return to IMAX theaters for an encore presentation. Starting January 23rd, the film will open in 143 IMAX screens domestically, and 29 screens internationally. Last year the film opened day and date in 94 domestic and 15 international IMAX theatres and went on to become the highest grossing live-action Hollywood IMAX release, generating $63 million as it continued to be released throughout the IMAX network.

The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience features six sequences filmed with IMAX cameras, which marks the first time ever that a major feature film has been even partially shot using IMAX cameras.

"The Dark Knight is a crowning achievement in every sense of the word," said Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. "We want to provide one more opportunity for moviegoers to experience it on the big screen as it was meant to be seen. We're also very excited to give more fans in new markets an opportunity to experience the film in this special way, thanks to the continued rapid growth of the IMAX theatre network."

"As audiences discovered over the summer, The Dark Knight is not only a phenomenal film, but an extraordinarily unique experience in IMAX," said Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. "With the multitude of accolades it has received this season, we wanted to bring this amazing film back to theaters to give audiences another chance to see it on the big screen and in the expanded IMAX locations around the globe."

"We are grateful to Chris Nolan and Warner Bros Pictures for incorporating IMAX into such a wonderful cinematic masterpiece, and we're honored to bring it back to our theatres," said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "The anticipation surrounding the initial IMAX release reached beyond the markets where we had IMAX theatres and we're delighted that moviegoers in many of those markets will now have the chance to Experience it in IMAX."

One of the most celebrated and successful films of this or any year, The Dark Knight has been hailed by both critics and audiences since its original release last July. The film garnered widespread acclaim for its artistic and technical achievements, culminating with the film being named on more than 150 critics' lists of the year's top-ten films.

In addition, the filmmakers behind The Dark Knight have been honored by their peers, with Christopher Nolan receiving a Directors Guild of America Award nomination; producers Nolan, Charles Roven and Emma Thomas garnering a Producers Guild Award nomination; and a Writers Guild of America Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay going to Chris Nolan, Jonathan Nolan and David S. Goyer. Cast member Heath Ledger received a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, and has also won a Golden Globe, Critics' Choice Award and numerous other critics groups' awards for Best Supporting Actor.

The Dark Knight also won the Critics' Choice Award for Best Action Film, and swept the People's Choice Awards in five categories, including Favorite Movie and Favorite Cast.

The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience is scheduled to play at the following locations starting on January 23rd.

As much as I liked The Dark Knight I'm not going to spend 15 bucks to see it again on IMAX. But I do hope It makes enough money to surpass Titanic. That would be sweeeeeeet!

shelley, the funniest part about jigsaw's comment is that it was completely random and did not belong at all. I even looked through the comments to see if somebody maybe name dropped The Punisher, but nadda thing. Why he started talking about Jigsaw from The Punisher, we will never know lol.

Steampunk being the only person that dislikes Heath Ledger's Joker lol. Hell, even my brother, who grew up on the original Batman argued with me until he watched The Dark Knight, then he was put in his place lol. But you gotta understand, they are two huge different character traits between them. Nicholson's Joker (I think that's the year) was the funny/comic version of The Joker. He was crazy still, just more jokes than violence. Nothing wrong with that, he has many awesome quotes and one-liners that will live on forever. Plus, his personality is pretty much the same has Nicholson's anyway, comedy wise. Heath's Joker was dark and sadistic, with a tad of comedy, but not much. He is funny when he wasn't trying to be which made us laugh. Like when he slaps the people in the face asking where Harvey is lol. And from what I've gathered, in the original comics, Heath's Joker is more on the spot than Nicholson's. Not a big deal being accurate. I just think you are stuck on the old Batman film's Joker. If that movie was never made, would have you cared how The Joker was in The Dark Knight? Not likely, cause you wouldn't have known who he was (unless you read those original comics). And what kind of Joker were you expecting anyway? You saw the trailers, you could tell he was scary. So why the let down? And they did give him a couple good quotes and lines as well. His were all deep and with purpose. Something the old Batman lacked.

Cap25, Heath brought his own vision to the role of 'The Joker' it just wasn't the kind of joker i was expected, hence it failed for my liking. Some aspects worked and some didn't, The Joker is the movies only saving grace, without him in it i believe the movie would of failed.

Sorry, but I can't stand it. Jigsaw, 'should have been more scarier' is terrible grammar. You should have said 'should have been more scary' or 'should have been scarier'. Just for future information.

steampump, i only ask you this, as a man of acting i am curios what about heath's portrayal of The Joker did you not enjoy. I feel like that is the one thing that everyone should agree on is the fact that Heath gave us one hell of a preformance in his last full length film. (Terry Gilliam's Imaginarium of Dr. Parnasses (sp?) will be his last fil) The Dark Knight is an amazing picture with so many layers, the movie itself is rich with beautiful cinematography, perfect music that draws you deeper into the movie, and a cast that is so good they are able to play off of each other and grow as their respective characters on screen. Now i am not asking you to change your opinion on the movie, you may not have enjoyed it fully, but you should just at least respect it for what it is. Some people dont enjoy Shakespeare but can still call his work a masterpiece, same with art, or literature.

I think the dark knight should have gotten the nomination over the reader btw. I knew it wouldnt win but i think it at least deserved the nomination.

ALSO for all of you who are hating the idea of TDK being re-released in IMAX. Its not like its a widespread release again, its just in IMAX, which for those of you who havent has the true pleasure of seeing it in IMAX it is most certainly an experience. IMAX is how this movie is meant to be viewed and I love the idea that they are giving people a second chance to see quite possibly the most thrilling and visually stunning IMAX film to date. (Watchmen might give it a good run though) So please before you start hating, go give it a try, i had to drive 4 1/2 hours just to see it, but you know what? worth every single minute of it. Gotta love living way up north.

I refuse to see this on IMAX since I saw it already 2xs in theater when it 1st came out, then bought it on DVD!

Damn shame that it didn't get Nominated for "Best Picture"! If Hollywood wanted to re-release "The Dark Knight" then they should have waited to release the film on DVD!

The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience features six sequences filmed with IMAX cameras, which marks the first time ever that a major feature film has been even partially shot using IMAX cameras.....
& WITH THIS FACT IN MIND KIDDIES, THIS DIDN'T GET HELP GET A OSCAR NOD FOR "BEST PICTURE"!!

Jigsaw should of been more scarier. When his face is disfigured in the glass crushing machine, there should be more blood. The facial muscles should be exposes, and it would be grisly and bloody. Jigsaw then should flay other criminals faces, and sew them or staple them onto his face. His face should be grisly looking. The flayed skin should have alot blood stains on it. There should be scenes where Jigsaw flays a criminal face, and sews it to his face. The scenes should be really grisly and gory.

I have to agree with Vamp Ledger performance was not poor at all. If it was Steampunk Ledger would not have won a globe and nominated for an oscar. Yeah you have your own opinion but let's get real. Also those who are bashing the movie don't see it everyone don't have Blu ray. Plus steampunk what do you mean by the lack of the actual Batman. Bale performance as Batman really showed the true nature of him as depicted in the comics. Now Clooney's performance lacked the actual Batman persona.

Who cares what the retards think? This movie was meant to be seen in IMAX and its a great opportunity for those who missed out initially to see it in IMAX. Money is the name of the game, oh wait since the retards out there don't think so then they should just not watch movies or pirate instead... which ever suits them. The Dark Knight will forever be a fantastic movie, not just a super-hero genre film, but a truly great film because of all the various achievements of the cast and crew. It was fantastic work by talented people, those retards are simply bustin their balls because their crappy hero-movies can't and never will compare to TDK, so I say let Warner Bros. make their money, it will just ensure that the sequels will keep coming. Finally we Batman fans have gotten our dues for loving the greatest Comic book hero of all. Long Live The Dark Knight !!!

...... LMFAO!!!!! Diaigma, that was TOO much! XD!

SteamPunk, did you HONESTLY just say that Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker was poor?! You don't have to like the movie, but you cannot deny that his performance was AMAZING! I agree that it's not EVERYTHING that the people on this site crack it up to be, and comparing it with every other movie coming out (Like some twit on the thread about the new "Pirates of the Caribbean 4" film said that 'Films like this are just being made to see if they can be as good as 'The Dark Knight.' I wanted to kick him. Does it even OCCUR to him that 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' was famous before even 'Batman Begins' was out?), but it's DEFINITELY an amazing movie, and it deserves the Golden Globe(s) that it won, and the Oscars that it was nominated for, and will probably win a couple of. There's no denying that.
